Takayama Ryokan Private Onsen: In-Room or Bookable Bath?
Takayama ryokan private onsen: which inns have open-air baths in the room, which rent a private bath, and which baths are hot-spring water.
Takayama ryokan private onsen: if you want an open-air bath inside the room, Takayama Green Hotel lists five room types "with open-air bath" and sits a 6-minute walk from JR Takayama Station, as printed on its official page. The hotel does not state whether the in-room water is hot spring. For a private bath whose official page does say it uses the hot spring, WAT Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama is the only property in this guide that does: 4 free family open-air baths, a 7-minute walk from the east exit (checked October 2026).
Private onsen in Takayama: three different things
"Private onsen" in Takayama means three separate things, and the official pages word each one differently: a bath in the guest room, a private bath you book or use by the slot, and the shared onsen baths. The table shows each hotel's wording as printed on its official bath and room pages, checked October 2026.
| Hotel | In-room bath (official wording) | Bookable private bath | Shared baths are onsen? | Water in the private bath | Walk to station |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Takayama Green Hotel | 5 room types "with open-air bath" (露天風呂付) | None listed on the spa page | Yes: "Hida Takayama Onsen Tenryo no Yu" | Not published | 6 min |
| Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan | 2 rooms with a semi-open-air bath (半露天風呂); several rooms with a cypress bath (檜風呂) | None listed on the spa page | Yes: Takayama Onsen, simple spring | Not published | 10 min (3 min to the old town) |
| Takayama Ouan | Not in the official room table | 3 private baths, free, about 30 min, no reservation | Yes: "Hanasato no Yu", sodium chloride spring | Not stated; the page says only that private baths are also provided | 5 min |
| Oyado Koto no Yume | None listed | 1 bath, 40 min, ¥3,300 | Yes: Hida Takayama Onsen | "Not a hot spring" (official) | 2 min from the east exit |
| WAT Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama | None listed | 4 family open-air baths, free, no reservation (use when empty), 15:00-25:00 and 6:00-12:00 | Yes: hot-spring water from "Hidamari no Yu", sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring | Onsen (official: the spring is used in the family baths; equipment listed as open-air bath (hot spring)) | 7 min (east exit) |
| Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama | None listed | 3 private open-air baths, ¥2,750 per 45 min per room, booked on the day, first come, 15:00-23:00 | Yes: "Hida Takayama Onsen" garden baths | Listed with the onsen baths; not stated separately | 2 min |
Of the 6 Takayama properties in this guide (official bath pages checked October 2026), all 6 run onsen in their shared baths; 4 offer a private bath you book or use by the slot and 2 have a bath in the room, but only 2 say in writing what water fills a private bath: WAT says hot spring, Oyado Koto no Yume says not.
Rooms with their own open-air bath
Takayama Green Hotel is the clearest case of an in-room open-air bath near the station. Its official room list names five types, using the hotel's own wording: Royal Suite with open-air bath (Japanese-Western special room), Royal Suite with open-air bath (Western special room), Suite with open-air bath (Japanese-Western), Standard Western with open-air bath and Standard Japanese with open-air bath. Check the room page for the capacity of each type before booking. The room pages do not say whether the water is hot spring, so this guide calls it an in-room open-air bath, not an in-room onsen.
Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan puts the bath in a more traditional room. Kaze no Ma and Midori no Ma are each listed as a 12-tatami Japanese room plus a wide-windowed corridor (or living area), a semi-open-air bath and a viewing garden. Several suites and the top-floor special room carry a cypress bath instead. The official room page does not print a capacity for these rooms or say what water fills the baths, so check both before booking. There are only two such rooms, so book early for winter dates.
Bookable private baths: free, paid, onsen or not
A bookable private bath in Takayama is not automatically a hot spring, and the four properties that offer one handle it differently. Oyado Koto no Yume rents its private bath for 40 minutes at ¥3,300, for 1 to 3 guests, reservable from 16:00 to 22:00 (official page, checked October 2026). The page states in brackets that the private bath is not a hot spring. Groups of 4 or more must book two slots.
WAT Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama has 4 family open-air baths that are free and need no reservation: guests use one when it is empty, from 15:00 to 25:00 and from 6:00 to 12:00. The hotel's spa page says the hot-spring water from "Hidamari no Yu" is used in the large bath, the open-air bath and the family baths, and lists the equipment as open-air bath (hot spring). In winter the family baths have no showers because of freezing (official page, checked October 2026).
Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama has 3 private open-air baths at ¥2,750 per 45 minutes per room, booked on the day on a first-come basis from 15:00 to 23:00 (official page, checked October 2026). The page groups them with the "Hida Takayama Onsen" baths and does not state the water separately, so this guide does not call them onsen.
Takayama Ouan lists three private baths, named Shidarae, Shirayuki and Azumanishiki, that are free and used for about 30 minutes without a reservation. The official page does not say whether the private baths are fed by the onsen. It describes the 13th-floor observation bath and indoor bath as natural hot spring and adds that private baths are also provided.
For the general trade-off between private and shared baths, see private bath vs shared bath at an onsen ryokan. Families can read onsen with kids in Japan for how family bathing works.
What Takayama's hot spring water is
The shared baths at these hotels are onsen, and each official page prints the spring in its own terms. The analyses below are quoted from the hotels' pages, and apart from WAT they say nothing about the in-room or private baths.
- Takayama Green Hotel: "Hida Takayama Onsen Tenryo no Yu", 32.5°C at the time of survey, sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring (low-tonic, weakly alkaline, low-temperature), pH 8.1. The hotel calls it a "beauty bath". The bath complex is called "Fuga", and its open-air bath has a high-concentration carbonated bath. The hotel states the spring is heated and filtered.
- Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan: Takayama Onsen, a simple spring (low-tonic, weakly alkaline, low-temperature). Baths include the first-floor indoor bath Ishibashi no Yu (separate men's and women's sections), and Kachoan guests may also use the top-floor baths of its sister building Kofukan (men's Tsukiakari no Yu with an open-air bath and sauna, women's Kirara no Yu).
- WAT Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama: hot-spring water from "Hidamari no Yu", sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring, used in the large bath, open-air bath and family baths.
- Takayama Ouan: "Hanasato no Yu", sodium chloride spring, 34.1°C, 50 litres per minute, circulating.
Official pages checked did not print a tattoo rule for these hotels, so ask before you book if that matters to you. The general picture is in tattoos and onsen in Japan.
