Where to stay in Takayama: for a winter trip run on trains and buses, the east side of JR Takayama Station is the practical base, and Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama prints a 2-min walk from the station on its official access page. If the morning markets and the old town come first, Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan sits a 1-min walk from the Jinya and a 3-min walk from the old town, at the cost of a 10-min walk to the station (all as printed by the hotel, checked October 2026). The Nohi Bus terminal for Shirakawa-go, Nagoya and Shinjuku is at the station, so the station side wins whenever you arrive late or leave early.

Takayama's bases at a glance

Takayama is small enough that the choice comes down to three zones: the station side, the old town and Jinya side, and a hilltop resort that needs a shuttle. The table lists seven hotels with the walk time exactly as printed on each hotel's official page, checked October 2026. Hilton prints no walk because it runs a shuttle, and the table says so instead of guessing.

Of the seven Takayama hotels in this guide (official pages checked October 2026), six print a walk from JR Takayama Station (all but Hilton), and four of those six are 5 minutes or less: Washington Hotel Plaza at about 1, Country Hotel Takayama at 1, Tokyu Stay at 2 and Takayama Ouan at 5. WAT Hotel & Spa prints 7 minutes and Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan 10.

The station side: why it suits a winter trip

The station side suits winter because the train and the long-distance buses start from the same place, so wet or icy pavements stay short. The Nohi Bus network runs from Takayama Nohi Bus Center next to JR Takayama Station. Its Shinjuku line is listed at 5h30m (though the current daytime timetable runs 5h45m to 6h), and the operator states that all express buses on that line require a reservation (reserved seats only).

For a first night, a hotel within 2 minutes of the station means the walk with luggage is about as short as it gets. Tokyu Stay's official access page also notes luggage storage before check-in and after check-out, which helps if your train arrives before 15:00. If your hotel is a long way out, read our guide to reaching Takayama in winter first so you know which arrival times leave you walking in the dark.

The Washington Hotel Plaza page lists a large public bath and states its co-sleeping terms in full: children of elementary-school age or younger sleep free in an existing bed, one child per bed (a single takes 1, a twin takes 2), and the child's breakfast is ordered at the front desk (checked October 2026). That makes a twin room workable for two adults and two young children.

The old town side: closer to the morning markets

The old town side makes sense when the morning markets are the point of the trip. Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan's official access page lists the old town at a 3-min walk, the red Nakabashi bridge and Takayama Jinya at 1 min each, and the Miyagawa morning market at 7 min.

The markets run all year. According to the Hida tourist information site, the Jinya-mae and Miyagawa morning markets open from 8:00 to noon from December to March, and from 7:00 to noon from April to November (checked October 2026). The same pages say the number of stalls might drop to about 10 when it rains or during winter, so winter is a quieter version of the markets, not the full 60-stall Miyagawa line-up.

The trade-off is the station. The hotel prints a 10-min walk, and the same page says it will pick guests up at JR Takayama Station (Nohi Bus Center) to match arrival time, so confirm that service when you book. Snow and ice make the old town slow going, which is why our Takayama winter snow guide covers footwear and clothing.

Using Takayama as a base for Shirakawa-go

Takayama works as a Shirakawa-go base because the Nohi Bus ride from Takayama Nohi Bus Center takes about 50 minutes, according to the operator's Shirakawa-go page (checked October 2026). The page lists 16 round-trip services a day, some on a reservation basis, with online reservation available for reserved-seating services.

The same page carries a warning worth quoting for winter: buses may be significantly delayed, and delays of two hours or more can occur due to traffic from waiting for private-car parking at Shirakawa-go, heavy snowfall, or expressway closures. Plan a return that leaves slack before any onward train. For the January light-up nights, lottery and bus booking details are in our Shirakawa-go light-up stay guide, and the question of driving yourself is covered in our car versus bus comparison. If you plan to continue to Kanazawa, our Kanazawa area guide picks up from there.

Hilton Takayama Resort: a shuttle base, not a walking base

Hilton Takayama Resort is a shuttle-and-car base rather than a walking base. Its official access page tells guests to use the complimentary shuttle bus from the West Exit (Hakusan Exit) of JR Takayama Station, and lists 200 free parking spaces and about 10 minutes by car from Takayama IC (checked October 2026).

That makes it a different kind of stay from the hotels above: it is neither a station-side hotel nor an old town one. Room types and four-person capacity were not confirmed from the official site, so the table leaves them blank. Takayama is also a gateway to hot spring villages further into the mountains, but this guide stays with the town itself.

Which side of Takayama fits your trip

The right side of Takayama depends on how you arrive and what you do first each morning. The table below turns that into a decision, using only the facts above.

FAQ: where to stay in Takayama

Is it better to stay near Takayama Station or in the old town?

For a winter trip built on trains and the Nohi Bus, near the station is better, because hotels there print walks of 1 to 5 minutes. The old town side gives up about 10 minutes of walking to the station in exchange for a 1-min walk to Jinya and a 3-min walk to the old town (Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan, checked October 2026).

How far is the old town from Takayama Station?

The old town is about a 10-minute walk from the station by the official figures. Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama prints about 10 minutes on foot to the old town from its door, which is 2 minutes from the station, and Washington Hotel Plaza prints about 11 minutes.

Can I visit Shirakawa-go as a day trip from Takayama?

Yes. The Nohi Bus ride from Takayama Nohi Bus Center takes about 50 minutes, with 16 round-trip services a day, some on a reservation basis. The operator warns of delays of two hours or more from private-car traffic, heavy snowfall or expressway closures, so keep the return flexible.

Is Hilton Takayama Resort walkable to the old town?

No. The official access page directs guests to a free shuttle bus from the West (Hakusan) Exit of JR Takayama Station, and lists 200 free parking spaces and roughly 10 minutes by car from Takayama IC. Treat it as a base for people who arrive by shuttle or car.

Can a child share a bed at Washington Hotel Plaza?

Yes, within the hotel's stated terms. Its official page says children of elementary-school age or younger co-sleep free, one child per bed: a single room takes 1 child and a twin takes 2. The co-sleeping child's breakfast is ordered at the front desk (checked October 2026).
