How to get to Takayama in winter: from Nagoya, take the JR Hida limited express (about 2 hours 20 minutes, per JR Central); from Tokyo, the one direct option is the Shinjuku highway bus (5h30m listed, ¥8,000 daytime, per Nohi Bus, checked October 2026). The answer changes with your arrival time: if you will land in Takayama after dark, book a hotel at the station, such as Hida Takayama Washington Hotel Plaza (1-min walk from the East Exit, as printed on its official page) or Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama (2-min walk). Driving is a separate decision, covered in our Takayama winter car-versus-bus guide.

Three ways into Takayama, compared

Takayama has no airport and no Shinkansen station, so the main public routes from Nagoya and Tokyo are the Hida limited express from Nagoya and the highway buses. Times and fares below come from each operator's official page, checked October 2026; timetables change with the March revision, so confirm the winter timetable before you book.

From Nagoya: the Hida limited express

The Hida limited express is the standard way from Nagoya to Takayama, and JR Central's Takayama page gives the ride as about 2 hours and 20 minutes from Nagoya Station. Other sources print slightly different times (hotel access pages range from about 2 hours 10 minutes to about 2 hours 25 minutes), so treat the JR timetable as the figure to plan around.

The ride itself is part of the trip. We have taken the Hida from Nagoya, and the train follows the Hida River gorge for much of the way; on our trip the right-hand side in the direction of travel (seats A and B) had the river views, so pick that side if you can and check the seat map when you book, since the layout can differ by train set. In winter the gorge is one of the few places where you will see snow on the way up before Takayama itself.

The number of daily departures and the last train back from Takayama change with the timetable season. Look up the winter timetable on JR Central's Hida-Takayama page before you fix your hotel dates. If you want to sleep in Nagoya before the early train, see hotels near Nagoya Station and the Nagoya Station exit guide, which matters because the JR Central lines use a different part of the station from the private lines.

The Nagoya highway bus is the alternative when you prefer a single seat with no train: Nohi Bus lists ¥3,600 (¥3,300 with the web discount) and 2h40m, against the train's roughly 2 hours 20 minutes.

From Tokyo: Shinkansen plus Hida, or the Shinjuku bus

From Tokyo there are two public choices: change at Nagoya, or take the direct highway bus from Shinjuku. The Shinkansen-plus-Hida route is the faster one; Hilton Takayama Resort's access page prints about 4 hours 5 minutes in total, though the real total depends on the Shinkansen train you catch and the connection time at Nagoya.

The Shinjuku bus is a direct, one-seat ride: Nohi Bus lists 5h30m and ¥8,000 for the daytime service from Shinjuku (¥8,500 from Tokyo Yaesu), plus a ¥500 web discount. The daytime buses are listed without date restrictions: from Shinjuku at 7:05, 8:15, 9:15, 11:05 and 16:05, arriving in Takayama at 12:50, 14:00, 15:15, 16:50 and 21:50 (timetable checked October 2026), so the printed timetable runs 5h45m to 6h against the 5h30m headline. The overnight bus (Shinjuku 22:55, Takayama 5:00) runs only on dates Nohi Bus lists, and the October 2026 page lists none between November and February. Check Nohi Bus's Shinjuku line page for your travel date before you buy.

Reservations open one month before the travel date, and the page states that a reservation is cancelled automatically if payment is not made within 3 days (by 24:00 JST). The last daytime bus, 16:05 from Shinjuku, reaches Takayama at 21:50, which is the case for a hotel at the station (see below). For a Tokyo hotel before or after the trip, see hotels near Shinjuku Station, and for sending bags ahead, sending luggage between hotels in Japan.

Winter timetables and delays

Winter changes the timetable more than the route, so the safest approach is to check the operator on the day. Neither official page checked for this guide printed a winter suspension notice for the Hida train or the Nagoya and Shinjuku buses, so none is claimed here. JR Central publishes live line status on its conventional line operation information page.

How much snow to expect, month by month, is covered in our guide to snow in Takayama. For the bus to Shirakawa-go and the light-up nights, use our Shirakawa-go winter light-up guide rather than this page.

Arriving late: stay by the station

If your train or bus reaches Takayama in the evening, a hotel next to the station removes the only winter risk that matters, a walk over icy pavement with luggage. The Nohi Bus Center is next to JR Takayama Station, so one short walk covers both arrivals.

Hida Takayama Washington Hotel Plaza prints a 1-min walk from the JR Takayama East Exit, with check-in at 14:00 and check-out at 10:00. Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama prints about a 2-min walk from the station and about 10 minutes on foot to the old town. For the full comparison of station-side and old-town bases, see where to stay in Takayama.
