Does It Snow in Takayama in Winter? November to February
Does it snow in Takayama? Yes, from December: JMA normals put January snowfall at 117 cm. What that means for the old town and buses.
Does it snow in Takayama? Yes, it gets real snow from December to February: the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) 1991–2020 normals for the Takayama station put monthly snowfall at 66 cm in December, 117 cm in January and 90 cm in February, with the deepest snow cover of the year in February at 45 cm. November is the exception, at a normal total of 2 cm. If you want snow on the old town, go in January; if you want to avoid it, go in November. To keep the walk through snow short, Hida Takayama Washington Hotel Plaza prints a 1-min walk from the JR Takayama Station East Exit on its official page (checked October 2026).
Takayama snow by month: the JMA normals
The table below is copied from the JMA "normals" page for the Takayama station in Gifu, which covers 1991–2020 (30 years of data), checked October 2026. A normal is a 30-year average, so it describes a typical month, not a promise for the year you travel.
| Month | Mean temp (°C) | Daily max (°C) | Daily min (°C) | Snowfall, monthly total (cm) | Deepest snow cover (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 7.1 | 13.1 | 2.9 | 2 | 1 |
| December | 1.6 | 6.2 | -1.7 | 66 | 28 |
| January | -1.2 | 3.2 | -4.8 | 117 | 44 |
| February | -0.6 | 4.7 | -4.9 | 90 | 45 |
| March | 3.4 | 9.8 | -1.6 | 29 | 18 |
Of the 4 months from November to February, 3 have a JMA normal snowfall total above 60 cm at the Takayama station (1991–2020 normals, checked October 2026); January leads at 117 cm. Snowfall total (the "depth of snowfall" column) and deepest snow cover are two separate JMA statistics, so both are printed as JMA lists them. Source: JMA normals, Takayama (page in Japanese).
What snow changes in the old town and at the morning markets
The snow months are also the months when mornings stay below freezing: the JMA daily minimum normal is -4.8°C in January and -4.9°C in February, and -1.7°C in December. The daily maximum in January is only 3.2°C, so the cold lasts through the day in midwinter.
The two morning markets, Miyagawa (along the river) and Jinya-mae (in front of the Takayama Jinya), start later in winter. The Takayama city tourism site (hida.jp) lists the Miyagawa market hours as 7 a.m. to noon from April to November and 8 a.m. to noon from December to March (checked October 2026). The same page notes that the number of stalls might decrease to about 10 when it rains or during winter. It also gives a 15-min walk from JR Takayama Station to the Miyagawa market, which is a longer walk on a frozen morning than the distance suggests.
For the walk itself, the sensible kit is the same one a below-freezing morning calls for: shoes with a grip sole, waterproof footwear, and warm layers for a day that tops out around 3°C in January. For where the old town sits relative to the station, see where to stay in Takayama.
Buses and trains in snow
Snow is the main reason to leave slack in a bus plan. The Nohi Bus page for the Shirakawa-go line warns that buses may be significantly delayed, and that delays of two hours or more can occur because of traffic waiting for private car parking at Shirakawa-go, heavy snowfall, or expressway closures (Nohi Bus, Shirakawa-go line, checked October 2026).
For the limited express Hida trains, JR Central posts live operating status on its conventional line operation information page, so check it on the morning you travel. Getting to Takayama in the first place is covered in how to get to Takayama in winter.
Whether to drive in snow, including the winter tyre question, is covered in the Takayama and Shirakawa-go winter rental car guide. How the January light-up evenings work is in the Shirakawa-go light-up guide.
Hotels a short walk from the station in snow
Three hotels print a 2-min walk or shorter from the station on their official pages (checked October 2026), which keeps the time outside to a minimum on an icy evening.
- Hida Takayama Washington Hotel Plaza prints a 1-min walk from the JR Takayama East Exit and an 11-min walk to the old town.
- Oyado Koto no Yume prints a 2-min walk from the East Exit.
- Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama prints a 2-min walk from the East Exit and a 10-min walk to the old town, and its official page says the front desk holds luggage before check-in and after check-out.

When to go: snow or no snow
The right month depends on how much snow you want, and the JMA normals make the choice concrete. Hot-spring towns such as Okuhida and Gero can be added as a side trip from Takayama, and the general question of December against February is covered in December vs February for a Japan winter trip.
| You want | Go in | Why (JMA normal) |
|---|---|---|
| Snow on the old town streets | January | Snowfall total 117 cm; deepest snow cover 44 cm |
| Almost no snow, late autumn | November | Snowfall total 2 cm; daily max 13.1°C |
| Snow with milder days | Early December | December daily max 6.2°C; snowfall total 66 cm |
| The deepest snow cover | February | Deepest snow cover 45 cm; snowfall total 90 cm |
| Shirakawa-go light-up | January (light-up evenings) | January is also the snowiest month at 117 cm; see the light-up guide for the dates |
