Shinkansen New Year Reserved Seats 2026 2027: Nozomi Rules
Nozomi runs all-reserved Dec 25, 2026-Jan 5, 2027. When tickets go on sale, the Dec 31/Jan 1 quirk, and why JR Pass holders should book Hikari or Kodama first.
Shinkansen New Year reserved seats 2026 2027 planning comes down to one date: the day tickets go on sale for your specific travel date. Quick answer: Nozomi runs all-reserved — no unreserved cars at all — from December 25, 2026 through January 5, 2027, which covers the entire New Year travel window (JR Central and JR West's official schedule, checked September 2026). Reserved-seat tickets for a given travel date go on sale exactly one month ahead at 10:00 JST; because November has no 31st, both December 31 and January 1 tickets go on sale together, on December 1, 2026. If you're traveling on a Japan Rail Pass, book Hikari or Kodama instead of Nozomi — they still carry unreserved cars during this period — and reserve as early as you can, since those unreserved cars fill fast on the peak dates below.
When your tickets go on sale
The table below covers the ten travel dates most FIT travelers care about — December 26 through January 4. Sale dates are the same calendar date one month earlier, at 10:00 JST, at any JR ticket machine, staffed window, Smart EX or EX予約 (EX Reservation). The one exception is the pair marked below: since November only has 30 days, both December 31 and January 1 travel dates open together on December 1.
| Travel date | Tickets go on sale (10:00 JST) | Nozomi | Hikari & Kodama |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat, Dec 26, 2026 | Thu, Nov 26, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Sun, Dec 27, 2026 | Fri, Nov 27, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Mon, Dec 28, 2026 | Sat, Nov 28, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Tue, Dec 29, 2026 | Sun, Nov 29, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Wed, Dec 30, 2026 | Mon, Nov 30, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Thu, Dec 31, 2026 | Tue, Dec 1, 2026* | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Fri, Jan 1, 2027 | Tue, Dec 1, 2026* | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Sat, Jan 2, 2027 | Wed, Dec 2, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Sun, Jan 3, 2027 | Thu, Dec 3, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
| Mon, Jan 4, 2027 | Fri, Dec 4, 2026 | All-reserved | Unreserved cars still run |
*December 31 and January 1 share the same sale date. JR's rule for a travel date that has no matching day in the prior month (the 29th, 30th or 31st) is to open sales on the 1st of the travel month instead — since November has no 31st, that pushes both dates to December 1, 2026, 10:00 JST.
What "all-reserved" means for your ticket
During this window, the two cars on Nozomi that are normally unreserved (cars 1 and 2) run as reserved-only, and there's no unreserved fare that gets you a seat. You can still board with just a base fare plus an unreserved limited-express surcharge, but you're limited to standing in the vestibule between cars — even an apparently empty reserved seat isn't available to you, because it's very likely booked by someone boarding at a later stop. If sitting down matters to you, or you have luggage, skis or kids, a reserved ticket isn't optional during this period the way it might be the rest of the year.
The 10:00 JST rule and advance requests
General sale opens at 10:00 JST exactly one month before your travel date, at any JR ticket machine or window, and through Smart EX or EX予約 — the two reservation systems JR Central and JR West run for Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen bookings (Smart EX takes most non-Japanese credit cards and is the one most visitors use). Members of either system can also request seats far earlier, from 5:30 JST on the same calendar date one year before travel (Smart EX's own booking guide, checked September 2026). Before the one-month mark, though, only a provisional timetable exists for that far out: you pick your preferred train from the tentative schedule, and the actual train number, departure time and seat are confirmed and emailed to you starting at 8:00 JST on the same morning general sales open at 10:00. A limited block of seats is held for this one-year-ahead system, so if it shows full, waiting for the 10:00 general sale on the one-month date still works — that's when the rest of the seats release.
I've used JR East's ekinet advance reception window myself for a New Year booking before — it doesn't guarantee you a seat, but it lets you submit your request without needing to be at a screen right at 10:00. That service (separate from Smart EX/EX予約, and mainly relevant if you're connecting onto JR East's Tohoku, Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen beyond Tokyo rather than riding Nozomi itself) opens exactly one week before the general sale date, at 14:00 JST, and results are processed once the 10:00 sale begins — so book what you can as soon as the window opens, then treat the result as a starting point rather than a locked-in seat.
JR Pass holders: book Hikari and Kodama first
A Japan Rail Pass covers Hikari and Kodama on the Tokaido-Sanyo line at no extra cost, and — unlike Nozomi — both keep unreserved cars all year, including through this period. Nozomi and Mizuho aren't covered by the pass at all; riding either one means buying a separate Nozomi/Mizuho ticket on top of your pass (for example, Tokyo–Kyoto runs ¥4,960, Tokyo–Nagoya ¥4,180, checked September 2026), sold from one month before travel up to the day itself. Even with that extra ticket, you're still competing for one of the all-reserved seats — it isn't a way around the reservation requirement.
The practical move for pass holders over New Year is to reserve Hikari or Kodama seats as early as the sale windows above allow, rather than relying on the unreserved cars. They don't disappear during this period, but on the six or seven peak dates in the table above they fill up well before departure, and standing for two or three hours defeats the point of holding a pass in the first place. It's also worth checking current pass pricing before you buy: from October 1, 2026, the standard 7-day adult pass rose to ¥53,000 through authorized overseas agents, up from ¥50,000 (checked September 2026) — a small factor if you're weighing a pass against point-to-point Hikari/Kodama tickets for a short New Year loop.

Of the ten peak travel days between December 26, 2026 and January 4, 2027, all ten fall inside the Nozomi all-reserved window that JR Central and JR West confirmed runs December 25, 2026 through January 5, 2027 (checked September 2026) — meaning there is no unreserved-car option on Nozomi for any date a last-minute New Year trip is likely to touch.
Where to sleep once you've got your seat
If your New Year route runs through Kyoto, the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen also gets you to Nara for the midnight opening at Todai-ji on January 1 — see our guide to sleeping in Nara instead of Kyoto for New Year's Eve for which two hotels let you walk back after the 0:00 opening. FAQ: Shinkansen Over New Year
When exactly do New Year shinkansen tickets go on sale?
Reserved-seat tickets go on sale at 10:00 JST exactly one month before your travel date. For December 31 and January 1, 2027 specifically, both go on sale together on December 1, 2026, at 10:00 JST, because November has no 31st for the usual same-date rule to apply.
Is Nozomi really all-reserved for the whole holiday?
Yes. JR Central and JR West confirmed the all-reserved period runs December 25, 2026 through January 5, 2027 — every Nozomi departure on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen during that stretch, with no unreserved cars at all (checked September 2026).
Can I still ride Nozomi without a reserved seat?
You can board with a base fare plus an unreserved limited-express surcharge and stand in the vestibule, but you cannot sit in a reserved seat even if it looks empty — it's very likely held for a passenger boarding further down the line.
What does a Nozomi ticket cost on top of a Japan Rail Pass?
The pass doesn't cover Nozomi or Mizuho at all. You'd buy a separate Nozomi/Mizuho ticket alongside your pass — ¥4,960 for Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, ¥4,180 for Tokyo–Nagoya (checked September 2026) — sold from one month before travel through the day of travel. Hikari and Kodama need no extra ticket and keep unreserved cars year-round.
