Is a Drift Ice Day Trip From Sapporo Possible?
A day trip from Sapporo to see drift ice: the bus tour goes to Monbetsu, not Abashiri's Aurora, and the train leaves only 2h19min on the ground either way.
Is a drift ice day trip from Sapporo possible? Not to the famous icebreaker Aurora in Abashiri — the fastest same-day round trip by train leaves you about two hours on the ground, before you've even reached the pier. A day bus tour does exist, but it runs to Monbetsu's Garinko-go icebreaker instead, and it's a genuine 12-and-a-half-hour day. If it's specifically the Aurora sailing you're after, the shortest realistic plan is one night in Abashiri: Hotel Route-Inn Abashiri Ekimae or Dormy Inn Abashiri, both close enough to the station to catch a morning train and be on the boat by early afternoon. For the full lineup of station, port and lake hotels in Abashiri, see our where to stay in Abashiri guide.
Three ways people try this, compared
Door-to-door time counts every minute of transit, not just the ride itself — taxis, transfers and the walk to a pier all add up.
| Option | Door-to-door time | Time at the ice | What if the ice is out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus day tour to Monbetsu (Garinko-go) | About 12h 30min (Sapporo hotel 8:30 out, Sapporo Station ~21:00 back) | About 60 min on the icebreaker | No — one sailing, one fixed day, no rebooking |
| Train day trip to Abashiri (Aurora), same day | About 13h 33min if you try to return that night | About 2h 19min on the ground — before a taxi each way, that's not a safe cruise window | Doesn't really apply — the timing rarely allows the cruise at all |
| One night in Abashiri (Aurora) | Two days, one hotel night | Your pick of that day's sailings, plus a second morning | Yes — try a later sailing or the next morning |
The day bus tours
A Sapporo day bus tour that includes an icebreaker exists, but it goes to Monbetsu's Garinko-go, not Abashiri's Aurora. One such tour, run for the 2027 season (January 24 to March 7, 2027) by a Hokkaido-licensed operator and bookable through VELTRA, gathers at 8:20 and departs 8:30 from the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Sapporo, includes the roughly 60-minute Garinko-go III/IMERU sailing, a stop at the Sounkyo ice waterfall festival (about 40 minutes), the Tokkari Center seal park and Okhotsk Tower (February–March departures only, about 40 minutes), and a rest stop at a roadside station — all in a single day, arriving back at Sapporo Station's north exit around 21:00. That's about 12 hours 30 minutes gathering to arrival (VELTRA, tour listing for operator Wonder Styles, checked September 2026).
Searching a major agency's own listings for a Sapporo day-return tour to Abashiri's Aurora instead turns up nothing: Club Tourism's own site, checked in September 2026, listed only overnight Sapporo–Abashiri Aurora packages (one and two nights), with zero day-return options. That's not proof no such tour exists anywhere, but it lines up with the math above — Abashiri is simply too far from Sapporo for a comfortable bus day, while Monbetsu is close enough that operators build a (long) one-day product around it. If you'd rather split the Monbetsu day into two shorter ones, the town has its own station-area hotels, including Monbetsu Central Hotel and Monbetsu Prince Hotel downtown — an option if the 21:00 return doesn't suit your onward plans.
By train: why a day trip does not work
The Limited Express Okhotsk runs twice a day each direction between Sapporo and Abashiri. The only outbound service that reaches Abashiri in daylight, train 71D, leaves Sapporo at 6:52 and arrives Abashiri at 12:17 — 5 hours 25 minutes. The earliest train back toward Sapporo that departs after that arrival is 74D, which leaves Abashiri at 14:36 and reaches Sapporo at 20:25 — 5 hours 49 minutes (JR Hokkaido timetable search, checked September 2026). Put those two legs together and a same-day round trip means 13 hours 33 minutes in transit against about 2 hours 19 minutes on the ground in Abashiri — and that window still has to cover the taxi or bus to the pier, the sailing itself, and getting back to the station in time. There's no slack in it for the boat being delayed, let alone cancelled and rescheduled to a later sailing. It's a route built for an overnight, not a day trip.
By air: Sapporo to Memanbetsu
Flying cuts the transit sharply — a connecting flight from New Chitose to Memanbetsu runs roughly 50 minutes, and Sapporo's downtown Okadama Airport also has short-hop flights to Memanbetsu on JAL Group's Hokkaido Air System. One data point on that Okadama–Memanbetsu leg specifically: the writer has flown it in the morning with a young child along, continuing on to Haneda from Memanbetsu the same evening, with no delay or cancellation on that first, short hop — evidence the connection itself is workable within a morning, even though that particular trip didn't loop back to Sapporo. For the full breakdown of which Sapporo-area airport to use and how the connecting flights compare against the train, see our Memanbetsu vs. Kushiro vs. New Chitose comparison.
Fitting it into snow festival week
The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival runs February 4–11, 2027. Don't try to bolt the Aurora on as a day trip during festival week itself — the transit math above doesn't change just because you're already in Sapporo, and festival-week hotel and train demand in Sapporo is at its highest anyway. The cleaner plan is to treat Abashiri as its own one-night leg, either right before or right after your festival days, since drift ice sailings run into late March. Our snow festival hotel sellout timeline and snow festival accommodation guide cover the Sapporo side of that booking window, and hotels near Sapporo Station is the base to build the rest of the trip around.
The Sapporo–Abashiri math, checked September 2026
The faster of the two daily Limited Express Okhotsk trains between Sapporo and Abashiri covers the run in 5 hours 22 minutes (73D, Sapporo 15:30 to Abashiri 20:52), but it arrives too late in the evening for any same-day plan; the only one that arrives in daylight, 71D, takes 5 hours 25 minutes (Sapporo 6:52 to Abashiri 12:17) (JR Hokkaido timetable search, checked September 2026). Paired with the earliest possible same-day return, 74D at 14:36, that's 10 hours 47 minutes of the day spent on trains alone, against 2 hours 19 minutes on the ground — which is why a same-day round trip to see the Aurora doesn't really work, and why every hotel named in this guide is a 1-minute walk from the station rather than the port. JR Hokkaido had not published a separate winter 2027 timetable for the Okhotsk service as of this check; the airline and train figures above reflect the currently published, year-round schedule and are worth reconfirming closer to your travel dates.
Sample itinerary: one night in Abashiri
This assumes you can book the sailing you want on short notice, which isn't always true — see when to book drift ice cruise Abashiri for the weeks that sell out first. If your trip continues past Abashiri to Utoro or Lake Akan afterward, our eastern Hokkaido bus loop guide covers those onward connections without a rental car.

FAQ: Drift Ice From Sapporo
Can I see drift ice as a day trip from Sapporo?
Only if a bus day tour to Monbetsu's Garinko-go works for you — about 12 hours 30 minutes gathering to return, with roughly 60 minutes on the ice. A same-day round trip to Abashiri's Aurora by train leaves only about 2 hours 19 minutes on the ground, which isn't a safe window once you add the pier transfer.
Does the Sapporo day bus tour go to Abashiri or Monbetsu?
Monbetsu, for the Garinko-go icebreaker — not Abashiri's Aurora. A check of a major agency's own listings in September 2026 found overnight Sapporo–Abashiri Aurora packages but no day-return ones, which matches the transit math for that longer route.
How long is the train from Sapporo to Abashiri?
5 hours 22 to 25 minutes each way on the Limited Express Okhotsk, which runs twice daily in each direction (JR Hokkaido timetable search, checked September 2026). There is no faster rail option on this route.
Is flying to Memanbetsu faster than the train?
Yes — a connecting flight from New Chitose to Memanbetsu takes roughly 50 minutes, well under half the train time, and Okadama Airport in downtown Sapporo also has short-hop flights on the route. See our Memanbetsu vs. Kushiro vs. New Chitose guide for how the connections and onward transport compare.
