The one rule: book months ahead

Sapporo Snow Festival accommodation is one of the most time-sensitive bookings you will make for a Japan trip. The festival (Yuki Matsuri) runs February 4–11, 2026, and draws over two million visitors to one of the largest winter events in Asia. Hotels within walking distance of Odori Park sell out months before the opening night, and the rates still available climb to several times their off-peak level.

How far ahead? Most travelers aiming for festival week book five to six months out — meaning May or June for a February trip. Many properties near Odori fill their February allocation by September. Waiting until autumn is possible, but you will be choosing from what others passed on and paying festival-week premiums on top of that.

The three festival sites — and which to base near

The festival spreads across three locations, and knowing where you plan to spend most of your time shapes the accommodation decision.

• Odori Park (main site): A 1.5 km stretch of enormous snow sculptures fills the park across blocks 1 to 12, illuminated until 10 pm. This is the image most people associate with the festival and where the majority of visiting time goes.
• Susukino (ice sculpture site): The central stretch of Susukino hosts an ice sculpture competition and an ice bar, lit up through the evening. It sits about a 10-min walk south of Odori's eastern end — close enough to combine in one evening.
• Tsudome (snow play site): A family-oriented outdoor site in Higashi-ku with a giant slide and snow activities. Access is by the Toho Subway Line to Sakaemachi Station, then a paid shuttle bus (¥100 one-way; runs every 5–15 min between 8:40 and 16:00 during festival dates). Plan for a half-day excursion.

For most adult visitors, the Odori site drives the agenda. The best accommodation position is a 10-min walk or one subway stop from Odori Station. That places you at the sculptures in the evening without a long cold commute and keeps the subway accessible for Susukino and Tsudome days.

Near Sapporo Station — easy Odori access

JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo occupies the 23rd to 34th floors of the JR Tower directly above Sapporo Station. The Airport Express from New Chitose arrives downstairs — zero outdoor exposure after a late flight. If everything near Odori is sold out

It happens — especially if you start looking in October or November. A few approaches that keep the festival workable:

• Go one subway stop out: The Sapporo city subway is compact and reliable. Any hotel near Odori Station is within one or two stops of Sapporo Station to the north and Nakajima Koen to the south. Stations along the Namboku and Toho lines beyond Odori are all under 10 minutes away by train, and the stations themselves connect into the central underground walkway network.
• Susukino base: If your evenings will be in the entertainment district anyway, a hotel there puts you at the ice sculpture site and a 10-min walk from Odori. The APA Hotel Sapporo Odori Ekimae Minami sits between the two neighborhoods and worth checking for availability.

Getting around in festival-week cold

Walking times in February are longer than on a map. Paths are compacted snow or wet slush, not bare pavement, and the cold slows everyone down. Build in a buffer.

• Snow-widened walks: A 5-min summer walk can stretch to 8–10 min with snow underfoot. This matters most for the walk back from the Odori sculptures at night, when it is coldest. Waterproof boots with grip are non-negotiable.
• The Chikaho underground walkway: The underground pedestrian network connects Sapporo Station to Odori Station without any outdoor exposure. If your hotel feeds into it — Sapporo Grand Hotel, JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo, and Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo all do — you can commute to the festival's start point in a coat without a full winter kit. • Subway until midnight: The Sapporo subway runs until around midnight. The Odori site is lit until 10 pm, so missing the last train is unlikely unless you extend the evening in Susukino. Check the final departure times at your specific station.
