Biei Blue Pond Winter Without a Car: Tours or the Bus?

Biei Blue Pond in winter without a car: the Dohoku Bus schedule, Biyu Bus and tour options, and why Asahikawa beats Shirogane Onsen as a base.

It turns on one time: the last Dohoku bus back from Shirogane, measured against when the lights come on.

Quick answer: the Biei Blue Pond winter without a car question comes down to one thing — what time the last bus back from Shirogane leaves relative to when the lights come on. Ride the regular Dohoku Bus route in December and you can catch the light-up before the last bus home; in every other month the last departure we could confirm (16:51, per JR Hokkaido's routing guide) leaves before the lights come on — so unless Dohoku Bus's current winter timetable shows something later, book a guided tour or a taxi plan instead. Either way, don't plan on sleeping at Shirogane Onsen itself: the village has only a handful of properties and a thin winter bus service, so without a car a change of plan leaves you stuck. Base yourself in Asahikawa, where OMO7 Asahikawa is a 13-min walk from the station, or in Furano.

The light-up runs all winter, and that is the point

The Blue Pond you've seen in summer photos does not exist between December and February — Biei's own town office says plainly that snow cover hides the blue water for the whole winter. What replaces it is the illumination. The town has confirmed the 2026–27 light-up runs from October 22, 2026 through April 21, 2027, every night until 21:00, weather permitting. Lighting starts at 17:00 in October, November, and January, 16:30 in December, 17:30 in February, 18:00 in March, and 18:30 in April; Shirahige Falls, a short walk from the pond, is lit year-round from sunset to 21:00. Parking costs ¥1,000 for a car (¥6,000 for a bus, ¥300 for a motorcycle), and the town closes the pond to anyone stepping past the marked viewing area.

The bus, and why the last one back decides everything

Two ways to reach Shirogane by public transport exist, and only one return schedule survives contact with the light-up's start time. Dohoku Bus's Biei–Shirogane Line (route 39/42) runs from Asahikawa Station through Biei Station to Shirogane Onsen for ¥1,630 one-way from Asahikawa (¥900 from Biei). JR Hokkaido's own published access guide for this exact route lists the return service leaving Shirogane Onsen at 16:51. Set that against the light-up times above: in December (16:30 start) you land at the pond with the lights already on and still make that bus; in every other month, 16:51 comes before the lights turn on, and you would be riding home in the dark toward a pond you never saw lit. Call Dohoku Bus's Asahikawa Station office (0166-23-4161) to confirm the current timetable before you go — schedules shift between seasons, and we could not find a published table specifically for winter 2026–27.

Tours — what they actually include in winter

Winter tours out of Biei, Furano, and Sapporo build the trip around the same core stops: the Blue Pond illumination and Shirahige Falls, plus — depending on the operator — a stop at Biei Senka or the illuminated Shirogane Birke Forest. None of the winter listings we found include the patchwork-hill viewpoints; those are a summer add-on, since the hills themselves are under snow by December. Biei's own Biyu Bus runs a dedicated winter light-up course from a stop a 1-min walk from Biei Station — in the most recent season we could confirm (November 14, 2025 to February 14, 2026, Fridays and Saturdays plus December 21) it departed at 15:30 in November, December, and January and 16:45 in February; 2026–27 dates were not yet published when we checked. Sapporo-based operators, including listings on Klook's Sapporo day-tour listings, sell a longer version of the same route with hotel pickup, and Asahikawa's own sightseeing-taxi operators run a shorter, private version for small groups — worth comparing per person if you're travelling as three or four.

Do not plan to sleep at Shirogane Onsen

Shirogane Onsen sits right next to the pond, and staying there would solve the return-bus problem — but it is a small village at the end of a winter bus line, with no train and few services once the last bus has gone. Unless you have a car, that convenience turns into a trap the moment a plan changes. Base yourself in Asahikawa or Furano instead, where the trains, buses, and hotel booking sites all work the way you'd expect.

Asahikawa or Furano as the base

Asahikawa is the transit hub: it's where the Dohoku Bus route starts, where JR trains from Sapporo and Furano converge, and where the region's food scene is strongest — our Asahikawa ramen and jingisukan guide covers what to eat between excursions. It also puts Asahiyama Zoo's penguin walk within a short bus ride, so the two make an easy pair over more than one night; see our zoo day-trip guide for timing that against the 11:00 walk. We named OMO7 Asahikawa above as one option close to the station; our full Asahikawa hotel guide covers the rest.

Furano sits closer to the hills and to Tomamu, and makes more sense if the Blue Pond is one stop on a longer Furano-based itinerary rather than the main event — but you'll be relying on a tour or a taxi for the Shirogane leg either way. We could not find a winter public bus running directly between Furano and Shirogane; the Furano Bus company's own Blue Pond route only operates June through September. See our Furano hotel guide for where to stay there.

How much winter daylight you actually get

Biei doesn't have its own published sunset table, so the closest usable stand-in is Asahikawa, about 30km away: sunset there moves from 15:58 on December 1 to 17:20 by February 28 (sunset-time calculations for the city, checked September 2026). The light-up's official start time follows in three steps rather than a smooth curve — 16:30 in December, 17:00 in January, 17:30 in February (Biei town, checked September 2026) — and always lands after sunset, so there is no month where you'd arrive at the viewing point to find the pond still lit by daylight rather than by the installation.

FAQ: Biei Blue Pond in winter

When is the Blue Pond light-up in winter 2026–27?

The town of Biei has confirmed the light-up runs from October 22, 2026 through April 21, 2027, nightly until 21:00, weather permitting. Lighting starts at 17:00 in October, November, and January, 16:30 in December, 17:30 in February, 18:00 in March, and 18:30 in April.

Is the Blue Pond actually blue in winter?

No. Biei's own tourism office states directly that snow cover hides the water's color for the whole winter, so what you're visiting between December and February is the night illumination, not the blue-water scene from other seasons.

How much does the bus from Asahikawa to Shirogane Onsen cost?

The Dohoku Bus route service costs ¥1,630 one-way from Asahikawa Station and ¥900 one-way from Biei Station. The return schedule, not the fare, is what actually limits this option in winter — see the section above on why the last bus matters.

Can I visit the Blue Pond as a day trip from Sapporo?

Yes, but on a guided tour rather than public transit — train and bus connection times make a same-day round trip on your own impractical. Operators including listings on Klook run winter day tours from Sapporo hotels that build the schedule around the evening light-up rather than a daytime stop.
