Driving the Island

A rental car is the realistic way to explore Yakushima. A round-island drive takes about half a day, and the highlight is the Seibu-rindo forest road — a 20-km stretch along the western coast through UNESCO World Heritage forest where Yakushima macaques and Yakushika deer often wander onto the road.
