Okinawa Resort School Groups: Which Months Should You Avoid?
Okinawa resort school groups peak in November (FY2024: 2,084 schools). One resort names its own programme; how to avoid a shared breakfast room.
Okinawa resort school groups are most common from October through December, and the prefecture's own tourism data shows November is the single busiest month of the year for both the number of schools and the number of students (Okinawa Prefecture school-trip survey, FY2024). An average school group is around 170 students (358,521 students ÷ 2,084 schools, FY2024). Kanucha Resort, for one, publishes a school-trip programme and names the guest wings it uses for it. If sharing a breakfast buffet with a large group isn't what you want, Kafuu Resort Fuchaku Condo & Villas is a condominium-style property where the condominium and annex wings come with their own kitchen, so you're not relying on a shared dining room at all. Whichever resort you book, ask directly about your dates before you pay.
When: school trips to Okinawa by month
Okinawa Prefecture's tourism policy division counted 2,084 school trips to the prefecture in fiscal 2024, carrying 358,521 students — up 5.7% in students and 7.8% in schools on the previous year — and its own summary states that visits concentrate in two windows, May–June and October–December, with November the single busiest month by both schools and students (Okinawa Prefecture Tourism Policy Division school-trip survey, published December 2025). The same report notes it is compiled from data supplied by the travel agencies that handle school-trip bookings, not a full census of every trip. Against the pre-pandemic baseline, fiscal 2024 stood at 87.3% of fiscal 2019's student total and 86.3% of its school total — a recovery still short of complete.
That FY2024 report gives the monthly totals in a chart rather than a printed table. The most recent year with exact published monthly numbers is calendar 2018, when the annual total (429,224 students) was higher than FY2024's 358,521. The two-peak shape — a smaller bump in May–June, then the bigger one in October–December — reads the same in both years:
| Month | Schools (2018) | Students (2018) |
|---|---|---|
| May | 429 | 54,779 |
| June | 217 | 34,575 |
| September | 67 | 11,698 |
| October | 382 | 80,400 |
| November | 389 | 85,195 |
| December | 386 | 71,947 |
For where school groups travel from and why autumn is their season nationally, our Japan school-trip season guide covers the mainland picture; this page stays with Okinawa. For a traveller booking October–December, the practical read is that school groups are somewhere in the prefecture most weeks of that window, with November carrying the most of them — the only reliable check for your own dates is asking the resort itself.
Where they stay: Naha, the west coast and the north
The last time the prefecture published a breakdown by accommodation municipality, in 2018, school trips split across the island rather than clustering in one place: Naha City held 25.5% of school-trip stays, Onna Village 17.3%, Motobu Town 8.8% and Nago City 8.2% (Okinawa Prefecture tourism yearbook, 2018 data). Add Onna, Motobu and Nago together and the west-coast-and-north resort belt accounts for a little over a third of stays — on the same order as Naha alone, not a smaller side note. Chatan Town, sometimes assumed to be a school-trip hub because of how many hotels it has, held just 2.6% of stays in the same count.
A newer municipality-level breakdown hasn't been published alongside the more recent survey, so this 2018 split is the most specific figure available; treat the shares as a shape rather than today's exact numbers. For area-by-area hotel lists rather than the school-trip angle, see our guides to Onna Village resorts and Naha versus Onna Village as a base.
Resorts that publish a school-trip programme
Kanucha Resort, on Nago's east coast at the southern edge of Yanbaru, publishes an official school-trip programme page — the kind of primary evidence this section looks for: a resort saying in its own words that it takes school groups, not a guess based on size or location. The page names North Wing and Azalea Wing as the guest wings used for educational travel, and states that when two schools stay at the same time, room assignments are split across separate wings. It also states that all three daily meals can be adjusted for food allergies with a month's notice, and lists separate sales-office contacts in Tokyo and Naha for group bookings (checked October 2026). If you book Kanucha Resort (294 rooms) in this window, ask to be placed outside North Wing and Azalea Wing — the page doesn't say whether dining rooms or the pool are shared with the groups staying in those wings.
If you would rather not share the breakfast room
The structural fix for a shared breakfast room is a condominium-style room with its own kitchen, not simply a smaller hotel. At Kafuu Resort Fuchaku Condo & Villas, on Onna's coast, the resort's own room page states that the condominium and annex wings come with a kitchen, microwave and washer-dryer, within a 333-room property (checked October 2026). Near Motobu, the official FAQ page for Ala Mahaina Condo Hotel states that every room comes with a kitchen (IH cooktop, microwave, pots and pans included) and an ocean view; the property sits in the roughly 100-room bracket, per its own award announcements. Neither property's own site says whether it also hosts school groups — a kitchen only gets you out of a shared dining room if one is booked in the same building on your dates. For more options in the same area, our Nago and Motobu hotel guide and Okinawa family-hotel roundup cover both condo-style and standard rooms.
Before booking any resort in this window, email or call and ask directly: "Are any school groups booked at your property on these dates?" is a specific, fair question to put to the resort.
Table: how to read a resort before booking in November
| Resort | Area | School-trip programme on official site? | In-room kitchen | Rooms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kanucha Resort | Nago (Yanbaru) | Yes — kanucha.jp/school | Not stated | 294 |
| Kafuu Resort Fuchaku Condo & Villas | Onna | Not stated | Yes, condo and annex wings | 333 |
| Ala Mahaina Condo Hotel | Motobu | Not stated | Yes, all rooms | ~100 |
Read this table as a starting point, not a verdict. "Programme on official site" tells you whether a resort is set up to host school groups at all, not whether one is booked on your specific dates — for that, ask the property directly. If a resort stay isn't the plan at all, our guide to staying in Okinawa without a car covers car-free bases away from the west-coast resort belt entirely.

FAQ: Okinawa resorts in school trip season
When is school trip season in Okinawa?
Okinawa's school-trip visits concentrate in two windows, May–June and October–December, and November is the single busiest month of the year by both measures. In fiscal 2024, 2,084 schools and 358,521 students visited in total, and the prefecture's own summary names November as the peak month (Okinawa Prefecture school-trip survey, published December 2025).
How many students visit Okinawa on school trips?
In fiscal 2024, 358,521 students arrived on 2,084 separate school trips — an average of about 170 students per trip — up 5.7% in students and 7.8% in schools from the year before (Okinawa Prefecture Tourism Policy Division, published December 2025). Coronavirus-era totals from 2020–2021 are far lower and aren't comparable to current volumes.
Which areas do school groups stay in?
In the prefecture's most recent published breakdown, from 2018, Naha City held 25.5% of school-trip stays, Onna Village 17.3%, Motobu Town 8.8% and Nago City 8.2%. No single resort area holds a majority, so assuming any one area is free of school groups is a guess rather than a fact.
Is December quieter than November?
In the 2018 count, December (386 schools, 71,947 students) ran slightly behind November (389 schools, 85,195 students) and ahead of May by students (54,779), though May had more schools (429), and far ahead of the September low (67 schools, 11,698 students). The newer FY2024 summary confirms November as the peak month without publishing December's exact figure on its own.
