Snow-covered mountain road running into a tunnel portal in winter
About 70 km separates Kiroro and Rusutsu — 1.5 to 2 hours by car in clear conditions, and no same-day public route at all.

There is no direct winter bus or train for a Kiroro to Rusutsu transfer. Every public-transport route requires at least one transfer, and the two most useful shuttle services — the Kiroro Ski Bus and the Sapporo–Rusutsu shuttle (Rusutsu-Go) — do not connect on the same day, so a same-day public-transit transfer is not realistic. A private transfer or self-drive covers the roughly 70 km in about 1.5–2 hours in clear winter conditions (roughly ¥25,000–¥40,000, quoted on request, depending on operator and group size); via-Sapporo public transport plus an overnight typically runs a half-day-to-full-day, at ¥2,800 for the Kiroro bus plus a Rusutsu-Go fare not yet published for 2026-27. The answer changes if you are willing to sleep in Sapporo between legs, which is the option most travellers end up taking. See our guide to getting between Hokkaido's ski resorts for how this pair fits into the wider picture.

Is there a direct service?

No operator runs a scheduled bus, train, or combined ski-liner directly between Kiroro and Rusutsu for winter 2026-27, and none did for winter 2025-26 either. Hokkaido Resort Liner (operated by Hokkaido Access Network) connects New Chitose Airport with Niseko and Rusutsu, and a separate bus connects Niseko with Kiroro on set days, but no single service links Kiroro and Rusutsu end to end. If you see a route on a map app that looks continuous, it is stitching together legs that require a change and a wait, not a through service (checked August 2026). Of the four ways to cover this pair, none is a single scheduled through service, and the two seasonal ski buses that come closest run one round trip a day each (checked August 2026).

The via-Sapporo route, leg by leg

Going via Sapporo means two separate shuttle legs, and the timetables do not line up for a same-day transfer. Kiroro's published 2026-27 timetable has the Kiroro Ski Bus running Sapporo–Kiroro daily from 10 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, one round trip a day — leaving Sapporo at 7:40 and returning from Kiroro at 16:05 — for a one-way adult fare of ¥2,800, up from ¥2,500 in 2025-26 (checked September 2026). The Sapporo–Rusutsu shuttle (Rusutsu-Go) ran free from 29 November 2025 to 31 March 2026 (reservation required by 3:00pm the previous day), with a single daily departure from Sapporo at 8:00am arriving Rusutsu 10:00–10:20am. From 28 November 2026 it becomes a paid service; its 2026-27 fare, booking method and timetable had not been published when this was checked in September 2026. The Kiroro Ski Bus doesn't head back toward Sapporo until 16:05, so there is no way to be in Sapporo in time to catch Rusutsu-Go's morning departure on the same day you've been at Kiroro. The Rusutsu side of this journey is already fixed for 2026-27 — Hokkaido Access Network runs New Chitose and Sapporo to Rusutsu daily from early December to the end of March at ¥5,500 for an adult one way. On the Kiroro side, Kiroro's 2026-27 timetable does not name the bus operator, and Hokkaido Access Network still lists its Kiroro services as being arranged (checked September 2026). If Rusutsu-Go keeps last season's single morning departure, the mismatch in timings will repeat.

In 2025-26 both required online reservation, with different deadlines: 18:00 the day before for the Kiroro Ski Bus and 15:00 the day before for Rusutsu-Go. Neither has confirmed its 2026-27 booking terms yet (checked September 2026). Both are seasonal services that stop running outside their published windows — check the current dates before you build an itinerary around either one.

Via-Otaru and via-Niseko alternatives

Kiroro's published 2026-27 timetable also lists a paid Otaru–Kiroro bus (adult ¥2,200 one-way, child ¥1,600, 1 December 2026 – 25 April 2027, daily in the top season of 19 December – 14 March), up from ¥2,000 in 2025-26, plus a free Otaru–Kiroro shuttle from 28 to 30 November 2026 that needs no reservation (checked September 2026). Either could in theory connect to a Sapporo-bound JR train from Otaru and on to Rusutsu-Go, but Rusutsu-Go's 2026-27 timetable has not been published, so this connection cannot be verified as workable rather than merely theoretical. Treat it as unconfirmed rather than a recommended route.

A separate service, Rusutsu's Niseko shuttle ("Rusutsu Powder Day Trip"), links Niseko and Rusutsu (last season 3 January–28 February 2026, ¥9,000 round trip, 8:30am out / 4:30pm back; the 2026-27 service had not been published when checked in September 2026), and a Niseko–Kiroro bus runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (20 December 2026 – 20 February 2027, per Kiroro's timetable). The Niseko–Rusutsu service is a same-day round-trip day tour, not a one-way transfer: it explicitly does not allow luggage to be stored on the bus between the outbound and return legs, which rules it out for anyone actually relocating between resorts with ski bags and suitcases rather than day-tripping. It's useful only if you are already staying in Niseko and want a one-day visit to the other resort.

Private transfer and taxi

Charter transfer companies operating in the area (e.g. Wheels Transfers Hokkaido) list Kiroro–Rusutsu as a quote-on-request route rather than a fixed fare on their published price list, since it falls outside their standard hub-to-hub pairs — expect to submit pickup/drop-off details and passenger/luggage counts and receive a quote back rather than an instant online price. MK Taxi Sapporo, which we've verified for the New Chitose–Kiroro leg, only accepts bookings where pickup or drop-off is within Sapporo City itself, so it does not cover a direct Kiroro–Rusutsu run — it's an option only if you're routing through Sapporo anyway. Vehicles suited to ski luggage (minivan-class or larger) typically need to be requested specifically since a standard sedan taxi won't fit two sets of ski bags and suitcases for a family of four. We have no commercial relationship with any of the transfer operators named here.

Driving it yourself

The distance is roughly 70 km and the drive takes about 1.5 hours on a clear, dry road — but that is the map-app estimate, not a verified winter figure specific to this pair, so treat it as a floor rather than a plan. The most direct road route runs via Route 393 through Akaigawa village and Kutchan, crossing Kenashi Pass (毛無峠), a mountain-pass section that gets its own winter safety advisories from the local development bureau; an alternative uses the Sasson Expressway from Sapporo Kita IC to Asari IC before rejoining Route 393. Both options involve at least one pass or winding mountain section, so budget meaningfully more time than the dry-road estimate whenever snow is falling or the road is freshly plowed. For the general decision of whether to rent at all in a Hokkaido winter — including why map apps can route you onto seasonally closed roads — see our winter driving guide.

Your skis on this route

Whichever bus you take on this route carries skis and snowboards as normal checked items in the luggage hold at no extra charge, based on the operators' published terms; the exception is the Niseko–Rusutsu day-trip shuttle, which is carry-on only and explicitly excludes stored luggage between legs. For the full picture on gear rules across Hokkaido's ski buses and trains — hold capacity, JR's carry-on regulations, and when a reservation for oversized luggage is required — see our dedicated guide.

When to book this one

Because this route runs through two separately-booked shuttles rather than one operator, book each leg as soon as your dates are fixed rather than waiting to bundle them — a seat on one leg does not hold a seat on the other, and in 2025-26 the two deadlines weren't the same (18:00 the day before for the Kiroro Ski Bus, 15:00 the day before for Rusutsu-Go). For the general booking-window guidance (how far out these seasonal ski buses typically sell out, and which weeks are tightest), see our guide to when Hokkaido ski transfers sell out.

Is it worth doing as a day move, or should you sleep in Sapporo?

Given that the two public shuttles don't connect on the same day, a same-day Kiroro-to-Rusutsu transfer by public transport isn't a realistic option — attempting it burns a travel day that produces no skiing at either end. The practical shapes are: (1) drive or charter it directly in half a day, keeping the rest of the day free, or (2) ride the Kiroro Ski Bus into Sapporo in the afternoon, sleep there, and catch the morning Rusutsu-Go (8:00am in 2025-26) the next day — which turns a transfer into a deliberate one-night Sapporo stop rather than a wasted day. For travellers without a car, the overnight-in-Sapporo shape is usually the better use of time than trying to force a same-day connection that the timetables don't support.

Where to stay at the Rusutsu end

Rusutsu Resort's on-mountain hotels put you at the lifts without a second transfer once you arrive. For the full range of options and how they compare, see our where to stay in Rusutsu guide. If you're building in the Sapporo overnight described above, our where to stay in Sapporo for skiing guide covers hotels convenient to both bus departure points.

FAQ: getting from Kiroro to Rusutsu

Is there a direct bus between Kiroro and Rusutsu?

No. No operator ran a direct scheduled service between the two resorts for winter 2025-26, and none had been announced for 2026-27 as of this check (August 2026). Every public-transport option requires at least one change, typically routed through Sapporo.

Can I do Kiroro to Rusutsu as a same-day transfer without a car?

Not reliably on public transport. The Kiroro Ski Bus doesn't leave Kiroro for Sapporo until 16:05 (2026-27 timetable), well after the Sapporo–Rusutsu shuttle's single morning departure (8:00am in 2025-26) has left, so the two legs don't connect on the same calendar day. A private charter or self-drive can complete the transfer in one go; public transport realistically means an overnight in Sapporo between legs.

How much does a private transfer from Kiroro to Rusutsu cost?

Charter operators serving the area quote this route on request rather than publishing a fixed fare, since it falls outside their standard hub routes; expect the quote to reflect the roughly 70 km, 1.5-hour-plus winter drive and the vehicle size needed for your luggage. Get a quote before you finalize dates, since winter demand can push prices up in peak weeks.

Can I bring my skis on the Kiroro–Sapporo or Sapporo–Rusutsu buses?

Yes on both scheduled shuttles — skis and snowboards go in the bus's luggage hold as standard items under each operator's published terms. The one exception on this general route is the Niseko–Rusutsu day-trip shuttle, which is carry-on only and does not allow luggage to be stored on board between the outbound and return legs.
