Where to Stay in Kochi: Station Area or Harimayabashi?

Where to stay in Kochi: the JR station area is the easier base; Harimayabashi and OMO7 Kochi work too, with a ¥230 flat tram fare in the city zone.

Where to stay in Kochi: for most trips, the JR Kochi Station area is the easier base, and JR Clement Inn Kochi (2-min walk from the station, as printed on its official page) is the simple pick. If you want the arcades and evening food within reach, or a roomier room, OMO7 Kochi works too, because the city trams cost a flat ¥230 for an adult inside the city zone (Tosaden notice, checked October 2026). The answer changes mainly on how you arrive and where you want to spend your evenings.

Station area or Harimayabashi: the short version

Kochi has two practical hotel zones: the blocks around JR Kochi Station, and the central streets around Harimayabashi, the tram crossing in the middle of town. The table below lists nine Kochi hotels, with access exactly as printed on each hotel's official page, checked October 2026. Not every hotel prints a walking time from the station, and I have left those blank rather than guess.

Of the nine Kochi hotels in this guide (official pages checked October 2026), four print a 4-min walk or shorter from JR Kochi Station: Kochi Hotel, JR Clement Inn Kochi, Kochi Pacific Hotel and Super Hotel Kochi. Only Richmond Hotel Kochi prints a longer walk than 7 minutes, at about 13. Sansuien is a different kind of stay and is covered separately below.

Why the station side is easier

The station side is easier because the train, the tram and the buses all sit in one place, so you arrive and leave without a transfer first. The Kochi Hotel's official page notes that the tram stop and the station bus terminal are both close to the hotel, and Kochi Pacific Hotel prints that the Kochi Ekimae tram stop is at the station front.

Distances from the station, per the Kochi tourism site: Harimayabashi is a 10-min walk, the Obiyamachi arcade and Hirome Market are about a 15-min walk, and Kochi Castle is about a 25-min walk. That is walkable in good weather, and the tram covers the same ground when it is hot or raining.

Having stayed on the central side, my view is that the station side is the more convenient base overall. I would not oversell it, though. The gap is about where you sleep, not about whether you can reach the sights, because the tram closes most of it.

Staying at OMO7 Kochi (Hotel Nikko Kochi Asahi Royal when I stayed)

OMO7 Kochi is the central option I can speak to from my own stay. In June 2021, when it was still Hotel Nikko Kochi Asahi Royal, I stayed there. The room was spacious. The hotel was renovated and reopened as OMO7 Kochi by Hoshino Resorts on June 13, 2024, and the room size would not have changed with the rebrand. I have not stayed since the renovation, so I am not describing the current interiors.

What the hotel's official pages say now:

  • 133 rooms in one building, for 1 to 4 guests per room; check-in 3:00 PM, check-out 11:00 AM.
  • The nearest tram stop is Saienbacho, a 4-min walk. It is not Harimayabashi, so check your route before you rely on the name.
  • From Kochi Ekimae tram stop to Saienbacho takes about 10 minutes via Harimayabashi, plus the walk. By taxi from JR Kochi Station it is about 5 minutes. The hotel does not print a walking time from the station.
  • The public bath, Tosa no Yu, has an indoor bath, an outdoor bath and a sauna, for hotel guests only. The official page says it is not a hot spring.
  • Children aged 6 and under may sleep on the same bed, as long as the room's maximum capacity is not exceeded (official site, checked October 2026).

On that stay, getting around by tram was enough to make the central location work. Even so, I found the station side more convenient overall, which is why I rank it first.

The hotel's official access page is here (Japanese).

Getting around by tram

The city tram is the reason a central hotel is workable: Kochi Ekimae and Harimayabashi both sit inside the flat-fare zone, so one ride costs an adult ¥230 (Tosaden notice, fare revised November 1, 2024, checked October 2026). The official zone runs from Kochi Ekimae through Harimayabashi to Sanbashi-dori 5-chome, and from Akebonocho-higashimachi through Harimayabashi to Kerabashi-dori. See the operator's fare page.

  • Children from 6 to under 12 pay half the adult fare, rounded up to the next 10 yen. Preschool children ride free, up to 2 per accompanying adult.
  • Kochi Ekimae to Harimayabashi takes about 7 minutes including the walk from the stop (Kochi tourism site).
  • Kochi Ekimae to Hirome Market (Ohashi-dori stop) takes about 18 minutes, including one transfer at Harimayabashi. Kochi Castle (Kochijo-mae stop) takes about 27 minutes by the same route.
  • Suica and other national IC cards are not accepted on the trams (Kochi tourism site). Only Tosaden's own IC card "Desuka" and cash work, so carry coins. The fare box gives no change, and the on-board changer takes only 1,000-yen notes.
  • A one-day pass for the city zone is ¥500 for an adult.

If you are comparing Japanese city trams, we also cover the Utsunomiya LRT, and Kumamoto's tram-based hotel areas. For another Shikoku base, see getting around Takamatsu.

What about Sansuien?

Sansuien is a different choice, not a Harimayabashi hotel. Its official page puts it a 7-min walk from Kochi Castle, so it suits a stay built around the castle and a hot-spring ryokan feel. I have not stayed there, so I will not describe it beyond what the official site prints. Its official notices show lodging continuing, with a day-bath closure for equipment checks announced at the end of September 2026.

FAQ: where to stay in Kochi

Is Kochi Station or Harimayabashi better to stay?

For most trips, the station side is easier, because four of the nine hotels in this guide print a 4-min walk or shorter from JR Kochi Station. Choose Harimayabashi or the central streets if you plan to spend evenings at Hirome Market, about a 15-min walk from the station, and do not mind a short tram ride back.

How much is the tram in Kochi?

An adult pays a flat ¥230 inside the city zone, which includes Kochi Ekimae and Harimayabashi (Tosaden, fare revised November 1, 2024, checked October 2026). A one-day pass for the city zone is ¥500 for an adult, so it pays off from three rides. Suica and other national IC cards do not work on the trams.

How far is Harimayabashi from Kochi Station?

The Kochi tourism site prints a 10-min walk from JR Kochi Station to Harimayabashi. By tram from Kochi Ekimae it takes about 7 minutes including the walk from the stop. Hirome Market is about a 15-min walk, and Kochi Castle about a 25-min walk.

Is OMO7 Kochi near Harimayabashi?

Not directly. The hotel's official page gives its nearest tram stop as Saienbacho, a 4-min walk, and about 10 minutes by tram from Kochi Ekimae via Harimayabashi. It also prints about 5 minutes by taxi from JR Kochi Station.

Can small children share the bed at OMO7 Kochi?

The official site says children aged 6 and under may sleep on the same bed, as long as the room's maximum capacity of 1 to 4 guests is not exceeded (checked October 2026). For the other hotels in this guide, this guide does not report their co-sleeping terms, so ask each hotel before booking: up to what age, how many children per bed, and whether there is an extra charge or futon.
