Miyajima is different. It is atmospheric after day-trippers leave, but it adds ferry logistics and usually costs more. It works best for one special night, not as the default base for a short Hiroshima city stay. Hiroshima Airport is also not a city airport: the official access routes rely on limousine buses or a JR-plus-bus connection through Shiraichi Station. If you are coming from Kansai or Kyushu, the Shinkansen is often simpler than flying into Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Station is the practical base. All Sanyo Shinkansen services stop here, and the airport limousine bus uses the Shinkansen Gate / North Exit side. The trade-off is that the Peace Memorial Park and Hondori dining area are not outside your door; expect a streetcar, taxi, or 25- to 35-min walk depending on your exact route.

The strongest station picks are the two hotels physically closest to the rail complex: Sheraton Grand Hiroshima Hotel and Hotel Granvia Hiroshima. Sheraton's own page describes it as a 1-min walk from JR Hiroshima Station, with rooms over 35 square meters. Granvia is the classic JR station hotel option. For a lower price, look at Daiwa Roynet Hotel Hiroshima-ekimae, Via Inn Prime Hiroshima Shinkansenguchi, or KOKO HOTEL Hiroshima Ekimae. The official shrine site identifies it as a World Heritage Site registered in 1996, and the JR Miyajima Ferry highlights its sea route toward the Great Torii during daytime services. The overnight advantage is atmosphere: deer on quieter lanes, lanterns, ryokan dinners, and the shrine area without tour groups.

The island costs more and limits late-night dining. Hotel Miyajima Villa, Iwaso, Kinsuikan and Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto are the names to compare. The airport's own access page lists bus routes from Hiroshima Station Shinkansen Gate and Hiroshima Bus Center, plus a JR route via Shiraichi Station and bus. That is workable, but it is not like Fukuoka Airport, where the city center is minutes away by subway. From Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka, the Shinkansen is often less stressful because you arrive directly at Hiroshima Station.
