Towada Art Center: Kusama, Nara and an Art Square You Can Walk Into

At Towada Art Center, the two names people travel for — Yayoi Kusama and Yoshitomo Nara — both stand outside the ticket gate, free, on a public square you can walk into. Kusama's Love Forever, Singing in Towada — a dotted pumpkin plus seven more sculptures — occupies the Art Square across the street, and Nara's Yoroshiku Girl 2012 is drawn across an exterior wall beside the museum shop. A ticket (¥1,800 for adults while a special exhibition runs, ¥1,000 when none is on, free for high-school age and younger; checked August 2026) buys the indoor collection, 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays. The thing that will actually decide your day is the bus timetable, not the museum: Towada has had no train station since its railway closed in 2012.

The museum spills into the street
Towada Art Center, designed by Ryue Nishizawa and opened in 2008, is not one building but a scattering of white boxes joined by glass corridors, which is why so much of the collection is visible before you buy anything. Each permanent work got its own room, and the rooms were then spread across the site with grass and pavement between them.
The museum's own guidebook, which we collected at the desk in August 2026, lists 37 permanent works: 23 at the museum and 14 more out in the surrounding streets. That split undersells it, because several of the museum's own 23 are outdoors as well, starting with Nara's wall drawing on the lawn side. The practical effect is that the walk between works is the exhibition, and a wet hour outside still shows you a lot.

The outdoor works you can see for free
Everything in the Art Square at Towada Art Center is free: there is no gate, no ticket desk and no queue system between you and the Kusama sculptures. The ground itself is part of the work — a green surface printed with yellow dots that runs under the pumpkin and out across the lawn. We photographed it under flat grey cloud in August 2026: the yellow-and-black pumpkin holds up in bad light better than most outdoor sculpture.
Nara's contribution is the one that surprises people who only know his paintings. Yoroshiku Girl 2012 is drawn in thick black line directly onto the white cladding of one of the boxes: a girl with a sideways stare on one face, a landscape of trees and small round faces wrapping the corner onto the next. Nara was born in Aomori Prefecture, so of all the international names on this site he is the local one, and the museum has given him the wall you see first from the street.
Erwin Wurm's Fat House and Fat Car are the third stop: a white house with a red tile roof, swollen as if inflated, and a red sports car slumped like a cushion under a carport, both behind a low white picket fence lined with marigolds. The interior is open 9:00–17:00 according to the sign on site in August 2026, so you can step inside without a museum ticket.
Two more outdoor pieces are easy to fold into the same loop: Inges Idee's Ghost / Unknown Mass in the Art Square and Choi Jeong Hwa's Flower Horse on the museum plaza, both listed in the museum's permanent collection. Between the square, the plaza and the street furniture along Kanchogaidori, an hour outdoors costs nothing.
What is inside, and why we are not showing it
The indoor galleries at Towada Art Center hold 23 permanent works, and we are deliberately publishing no photographs of any of them. The museum's condition for a site like ours — an English travel site that carries affiliate links — is that outdoor works may be reproduced and indoor works may not (confirmed with the museum, August 2026). So the inside gets described, not shown, which is the honest version anyway.
The one most visitors come out talking about is Ron Mueck's Standing Woman: a hyperreal elderly woman standing roughly 4 m tall, with skin, veins and individual hairs rendered at a scale that makes the room feel wrong. Leandro Erlich's Edificio — Buenos Aires lays a building facade flat on the floor beneath a tilted mirror, so visitors on the tiles appear to hang off a wall. Jim Lambie's Zobop covers a floor in vinyl tape; Yoko Ono and Chiharu Shiota each have a room.
Practical details for the indoor half, checked August 2026: 9:00–17:00 with last admission at 16:30, closed Mondays (or the Tuesday after a Monday public holiday), ¥1,800 for adults when a special exhibition is running and ¥1,000 when it is not, free for high-school students and younger. One date to plan around: the museum announced in February 2026 that the indoor galleries close from 1 April 2027 until 31 March 2028 for air-conditioning work, and that the Art Square and the street works stay open through it (museum notice, checked August 2026).
Getting there and getting out
Towada city has no railway station — the line to Towadashi closed in 2012 — so every route to Towada Art Center ends with a bus, a taxi or a car. The museum's own bus board carries English alongside Japanese and lists five destinations: Hachinohe Station, Shichinohe-Towada Station, the Lake Towada and Oirase area, Misawa Station, and Aomori Station / Shin-Aomori Station. Four of those five are railway stations and three of them — Hachinohe, Shichinohe-Towada and Shin-Aomori — are shinkansen stations, which is why this museum fits a north-bound rail trip better than its remoteness suggests.
The route worth knowing about is JR Bus Tohoku's Oirase-go from Hachinohe Station, roughly 40 minutes to the museum. Not every Oirase-go departure calls at the museum stop — the timetable marks it as a pass-through on some runs — so check the specific departure both ways (JR Bus Tohoku timetable, checked August 2026). JAPAN RAIL PASS and JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) are valid on it (JR Bus Tohoku route page, checked August 2026; the JR East–South Hokkaido and JR Tohoku–South Hokkaido passes are not). Reservations are required only if you board at Hachinohe Station West Exit. The same operator runs on toward Oirase and Lake Towada, so the museum works as a morning stop before the gorge.
Taxis are the other half of the answer, and the trap is the app. A notice at the museum in August 2026 lists three local companies — Sanbongi Taxi (0176-23-7155), Towada Taxi (0176-23-3155) and Aomori Taxi (0176-23-5155) — says a car normally arrives in 5 to 10 minutes when things are quiet, and recommends booking your return in advance. The same notice states that the GO ride-hailing app covers the Towada area only during Sanbongi Taxi's operating hours: 7:00–26:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, 7:00–25:00 on other days. Arrive on a late bus assuming the app will get you out, and it will not.

Can I see the Kusama pumpkin without buying a ticket?
Yes. Yayoi Kusama's Love Forever, Singing in Towada stands in the Art Square across the street from Towada Art Center, which is an open public square with no gate or admission charge. It is there when the galleries are closed, including Mondays, so an early or late bus still works for the outdoor half of the visit.
How long do I need at Towada Art Center?
Allow about an hour for the outdoor works alone — the Art Square, Nara's wall drawing and Erwin Wurm's Fat House and Fat Car are all within a few minutes of each other at Towada Art Center. Add an hour if you buy a ticket for the 23 indoor works. Anything under an hour total means skipping the ticket and staying outside.
Can I get to Towada Art Center with a Japan Rail Pass?
Partly. JR Bus Tohoku's Oirase-go runs from Hachinohe Station to Towada Art Center in about 40 minutes and accepts JAPAN RAIL PASS and JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area), per the operator's route page checked in August 2026. The Towada Kanko Dentetsu buses from Shichinohe-Towada and Hachinohe are separate paid services, and the JR East–South Hokkaido and JR Tohoku–South Hokkaido passes are not accepted on the JR bus.
