Using oneworld Miles for JAL Domestic Flights: Atmos, AAdvantage, Avios and Asia Miles
Atmos Rewards priced Haneda-New Chitose at 7,500 points plus $20 in August 2026. Which oneworld programmes publish a price, and which make you search.
Using oneworld miles for JAL domestic flights is the counterpart to the Star Alliance route into ANA, and it behaves differently in ways worth knowing before you plan. In August 2026 we priced Tokyo Haneda–Sapporo New Chitose through Atmos Rewards at 7,500 points plus $20 in economy and 15,000 points plus $20 in business. Both fares were marked refundable. The two things that separate this from the ANA side are the higher cash component and the fact that availability varies sharply between departures on the same route, on the same day.
The other difference is honesty about what we do not know. Cathay has stopped publishing award charts entirely, and figures for British Airways Avios on JAL domestic routes contradict each other across sources. Where we have not priced a seat ourselves, we say so rather than repeating a number.
What we actually saw
These are search results for one route on one day through Atmos Rewards, the programme renamed from Alaska Mileage Plan in August 2025.
| Flight | Departure | Economy (Main) | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| JL501 | 06:35 | Unavailable | 15,000 points + $20 (4 seats left) |
| JL527 | 18:40 | 7,500 points + $20 | 15,000 points + $20 (5 seats left) |
Two departures, the same route, the same day: one had no economy award at all while the other did, and both showed business availability in mid single digits. Of the two Haneda–New Chitose departures we priced in August 2026, only one offered an economy award seat, while both offered business — a reminder that on the JAL side the cabin you can get may not be the cabin you wanted (checked August 2026).
That variability is the practical lesson. On the ANA side through United, the constraint is quantity — two seats per flight at most, in our experience. On the JAL side through Atmos, the constraint is which departures release anything at all. Search several times of day before concluding a route is closed.
Atmos Rewards, formerly Alaska Mileage Plan
If you are following older guidance, the name change matters. Alaska rebranded Mileage Plan as Atmos Rewards in August 2025, and Hawaiian Airlines' HawaiianMiles were merged into it at a 1:1 rate on 1 October 2025. Existing Mileage Plan miles carried over as Atmos points with no change in value. Guides still telling you to log into Mileage Plan are describing a programme that no longer exists under that name.
For JAL domestic flights specifically, Atmos is the most usable oneworld option we have booked. The award fares display as refundable, the search is straightforward, and the point cost on a long domestic sector is reasonable. The $20 tax is roughly four times what United charges on comparable ANA sectors, which is not enough to change a decision but is enough to notice.
AAdvantage, Avios and Asia Miles: what is known and what is not
All three can reach JAL through oneworld. How much they charge is a different question, and we are not going to quote numbers we have not seen.
| Programme | Reaches JAL | What we can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Atmos Rewards | Yes | Priced by us: 7,500 points economy, 15,000 business, $20 tax (August 2026) |
| American AAdvantage | Yes | Bookable as a oneworld partner; we have not priced a domestic sector. Search your dates |
| British Airways Executive Club (Avios) | Yes | Published figures disagree with each other after the 2025 changes. Treat any quoted number as unverified and check the booking screen |
| Cathay (Asia Miles) | Yes | Cathay no longer publishes award charts, so a live search is the only way to learn the price. Partner rates were not part of the May 2026 devaluation of Cathay-operated flights |
| Finnair Plus | Yes | Now an Avios-based programme; same caution as British Airways |
If you hold Avios in more than one programme, they can generally be combined within the Avios family, which sometimes turns two unusable balances into one usable one. Check the current transfer rules before relying on it.
The regional carriers: J-AIR, Japan Air Commuter, Hokkaido Air System
The routes where a small balance is worth the most are not Haneda–Itami. They are the thin ones — island services and regional links where one operator flies the route, there is no train, and cash fares stay high because nothing competes them down. On the JAL side those are largely flown by group carriers rather than JAL mainline.
Japan Air Commuter and Hokkaido Air System joined oneworld as JAL affiliates on 25 October 2020. J-AIR and Japan Transocean Air were already affiliates before that. Ryukyu Air Commuter, which serves the smaller Okinawan islands, is excluded from JAL's own award tickets.
Affiliate status is a reason to search, not a promise. Whether a specific partner programme will actually issue an award on a J-AIR, JAC or HAC flight is a separate question from oneworld membership, and we have not tested every combination. Before you build an itinerary around a regional award seat — an Amami island hop, a Hokkaido regional link — run the search for your real dates and confirm the seat exists in your programme.
The $20 you do not pay on the ANA side
Taxes are the quiet difference between the two alliances on domestic Japanese routes.
Every ANA sector we priced through United came in between $2.90 and $5.20. Both JAL fares we priced through Atmos were $20. On a single one-way that gap is trivial. On a family of four flying two sectors each, it is $120 of difference for what is otherwise the same journey. If you hold miles in both alliances and the routes are interchangeable, the ANA side is cheaper in cash even before you compare mileage rates.
For the full comparison of which programmes reach which airline, see our guide to using foreign miles inside Japan, and the United and ANA guide for the Star Alliance side. If your plans might move, the cancellation guide explains why refundable award fares are worth more than their price. For the Hokkaido end of these routes, our Sapporo guide covers the city.
FAQ: oneworld miles on JAL domestic flights
How many miles do I need for a JAL domestic flight?
Through Atmos Rewards in August 2026, Tokyo Haneda–Sapporo New Chitose cost 7,500 points in economy and 15,000 points in business, each with $20 in tax. Other oneworld programmes price differently, and Cathay and British Airways do not publish figures you can rely on, so search your own dates rather than budgeting from a chart.
Is Alaska Mileage Plan still a thing?
It was renamed Atmos Rewards in August 2025, and HawaiianMiles merged into it 1:1 on 1 October 2025. Existing Mileage Plan miles became Atmos points at the same value. If a guide tells you to search on Mileage Plan, it predates the change.
Can I book J-AIR, Japan Air Commuter or Hokkaido Air System with partner miles?
They are oneworld affiliates through JAL — JAC and HAC since 25 October 2020, J-AIR and Japan Transocean Air before that — so they are worth searching. Whether your specific programme will issue the award is a separate question we have not tested across every combination, so confirm availability for your dates before planning around it. Ryukyu Air Commuter is excluded from JAL's own award tickets.
Why is economy unavailable but business open on the same flight?
The cabins have separate award inventory, and JAL releases them independently. We saw exactly this on Haneda–New Chitose: the early departure had no economy award while showing four business seats, and a later departure had both. Search several departures before deciding a route is closed.
