Nara School Groups at Todai-ji: What Time to Go in Autumn
Todai-ji opens 7:30am in October, 8:00am from November — how to beat autumn's school groups to the gate, and where in Nara to stay for either time.
Todai-ji's Daibutsuden opens at 7:30am in October and 8:00am from November through March (official hours). Autumn weekdays bring Nara school groups — many of them primary and junior-high classes, per Nara City's own count — through Nara Park during the day, so arriving right at opening keeps you ahead of most of them. If the earliest train from Kyoto or Osaka can't get you there in time, staying within walking distance of the park removes the guesswork; Nara Hotel sits on the park's southern edge. Coming from Osaka-Namba, the Kintetsu line (about 35–40 min) makes a same-morning day trip realistic for the later November opening — check the first train on your date.
Why Nara is on the itinerary
Nationally, Nara ranked 9th among Japanese destinations for high-school trips in fiscal 2024, drawing 102 of the 2,179 school-trip visits the Japan School Excursion Association recorded that year (4.7% of all visits; JSTB, published November 2025). October, November and December remain the three busiest months for domestic school trips nationwide — see our overview of the season for the national numbers.
Nara City's own survey puts a sharper point on the timing. In 2024 the city counted 747,000 school-trip visitors, of whom 81,000 stayed overnight — and October alone accounted for 20,065 of those overnight school-trip students, more than any other month, ahead of even November's 10,434 (Nara City Tourism Survey, published June 2025). Of that October total, 12,802 were elementary-school students, 5,729 were junior-high and just 1,534 were high-school students — Nara's school-trip visitors skew much younger than the national high-school figures cited elsewhere on this page. Day-trippers still outnumber overnight students more than eight to one in that count (666,000 vs. 81,000), which matters for planning: most groups pass through Nara Park for a few hours and move on, rather than staying the night themselves.
Opening times vs the first train from Kyoto and Osaka
Todai-ji's Daibutsuden keeps two schedules a year: 7:30am–5:30pm from April to October, and 8:00am–5:00pm from November to March (Todai-ji official site, checked October 2026). That half-hour gap matters for this exact season — the 7:30 opening in October is tighter to reach than the 8:00 opening from November. Kasuga Taisha's main sanctuary shifts on a similar pattern: 6:30am–5:30pm through October, 7:00am–5:00pm from November (Kasuga Taisha official site, checked October 2026).
| Start from | Typical journey | Arrive Nara | Walk to Todai-ji | At the gate by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Staying on the edge of Nara Park | — | — | 5–10 min | Before opening, October or November |
| Kyoto Station | About 45 min, JR Nara Line rapid service | JR Nara Station | About 25–30 min on foot, or an 11-min city bus plus a short walk | Check the first train on your date |
| Osaka-Namba | About 35–40 min, Kintetsu Nara Line Rapid Express | Kintetsu Nara Station | About 20 min on foot, or a short bus ride | Check the first train on your date |
| Osaka Station | About 50 min, JR Yamatoji Line rapid service | JR Nara Station | Same as the Kyoto Station row | Check the first train on your date |
These are typical off-peak journey times, not a guaranteed first-departure clock time — the exact earliest weekday train shifts with each timetable revision, so check the current JR West or Kintetsu timetable for your travel date. If you're routing the same early-gate strategy through Kyoto's own temples first, our Kyoto school groups guide covers that city's opening times separately.
Todai-ji, the deer and Kasuga Taisha: what opens when
Nara Park itself has no gate and no closing time — the deer, the paths and the approach are open around the clock. What has fixed hours is the paid hall inside the Daibutsuden: 7:30am–5:30pm April to October, 8:00am–5:00pm November to March, adult admission ¥800 (Todai-ji official site, checked October 2026).
Neither Todai-ji nor Kasuga Taisha publishes an hour-by-hour school-group schedule, and this article does not claim one exists. What the JSTB survey does establish, nationally, is that 796 of the 913 high schools that answered the question (87.2%) ran a self-guided small-group block at some point in their trip (JSTB, published November 2025) — but that figure covers high schools only, and Nara's own count shows its school-trip visitors are mostly elementary and junior-high students, whose travel style this survey doesn't measure. Being at the gate when it opens is the most straightforward way to be ahead of any group, whichever way it's organized.
Where to sleep if you want the gate
Nara Hotel, a 1909 property in Takabatacho, sits on the southern edge of Nara Park, within walking distance of Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and the Yoshikien and Isuien gardens — no train transfer stands between you and the gate. Shisui, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Nara, sits on the park's western edge next to Yoshikien Garden, at a higher price point.
If you'd rather be near a station, the choice splits by line. Kasuga Hotel is a 2-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station (Kasuga Hotel official site, checked October 2026), and that station is the closer of the two to Todai-ji. JW Marriott Hotel Nara sits near JR Nara Station instead — useful if you're arriving on the JR Nara Line from Kyoto or the Yamatoji Line from Osaka and don't want to change to Kintetsu; see our JW Marriott Hotel Nara review for the rooms.
For the area's full hotel range beyond these four, see our Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha hotel guide, the Kintetsu Nara vs. JR Nara comparison, our Nara area guide and hotels near Nara Park. If you're weighing an overnight stay for the Shosoin Repository exhibition or the autumn foliage rather than the school-group timing, that's a different decision covered in our autumn overnight guide.
Table: gate time by base

| JR Nara side | Check the first train on your date | JW Marriott Hotel Nara | You're routing through Kyoto or Osaka Station on JR |

FAQ: Nara school groups
What time does Todai-ji open in November?
The Daibutsuden's paid hall opens at 8:00am from November through March, half an hour later than the 7:30am opening that runs April through October (Todai-ji official site, checked October 2026). Nara Park itself has no gate and is open around the clock.
Can I get from Kyoto to Todai-ji before 9:00am?
Yes. The JR Nara Line's rapid service covers Kyoto Station to JR Nara Station in about 45 minutes, and the walk or short bus ride from there to Todai-ji adds roughly 20 to 30 minutes, so an early departure comfortably clears 9:00am. Whether you also beat the 7:30 or 8:00 opening depends on which specific train you catch — check the current timetable for the exact first departure on your travel date.
How many school students visit Nara?
Nara City counted 747,000 school-trip visitors in 2024 — 81,000 who stayed overnight and 666,000 on day trips — down 3.0% from 2023 but still recovering from the pandemic-era lows (Nara City Tourism Survey, published June 2025). October was the single busiest month for overnight school-trip students, at 20,065.
Are the deer affected by school groups?
There's no published data connecting visitor volume to deer behavior specifically. Nara Park's deer roam freely year-round regardless of who's in the park, and the general safety guidance — don't run, don't wave food overhead, keep an eye on small children — applies whether the park is quiet or busy with school groups.
