JW Marriott Nara Review: With Kids, Pool and Dinner in the Room
JW Marriott Nara review from a July 2021 family stay: dinner in the room, a pool the kids could use, and a bus stop right outside the door.
This JW Marriott Nara review is from a July 2021 stay — two adults, one primary-school child and one preschooler, in an Executive Premium Room at JW Marriott Hotel Nara. It's worth booking if you want a family evening that stays inside the hotel: an indoor pool the children could use, dinner brought to the room instead of a search for a table, and a bus stop right outside the door for whatever comes next. It's the wrong pick if the point of your trip is walking to Nara Park at first light, before the deer and the tour groups — Shin-Omiya, where the hotel sits, is west of the Kintetsu Nara / Nara Park area, one train stop or a shuttle ride away rather than a walk. One rule changes the answer outright: the hotel's pages open the pool to children only from age 6 — ages 6–15, 08:00–20:00, with an advance reservation — and list no slot for anyone younger (checked October 2026); if your youngest is under 6, confirm this before you promise the pool.
Why it works for a family: the evening stays inside the hotel
We stayed at JW Marriott Hotel Nara in July 2021 — two adults, one primary-school child and one preschooler — in an Executive Premium Room, and it suited us because the pool, dinner and the bus out all started at the hotel. None of those three required leaving the building or a taxi with tired children. The club lounge rules change often, so check the current terms rather than relying on older reports (my own stay, July 2021).
That matters more in Nara than in Kyoto or Osaka. Nara's dining scene tends to thin out once shrine hours end, and the city's better-known luxury addresses sit inside or beside Nara Park — a stay built around the view rather than the hotel's own facilities. The trade here runs the other way: give up the walk-to-the-park position for a hotel that can run your whole evening itself. If the park view is what you want instead, our roundup of Nara's luxury hotels covers those options.
We couldn't find this room category on Marriott's current room pages, so its size and occupancy are unconfirmed — ask the hotel. Small children going uncounted toward a room's stated occupancy is common practice at Japanese hotels, but we don't know if that's what let our family of four book one room here, or if the category simply allows four.
| JW Marriott Hotel Nara | What we did (July 2021) | Current rule or fact (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Room | Executive Premium Room, 2 adults + a primary-school child + a preschooler | 158 rooms in total |
| Pool | Used it with the children | Ages 6–15 only, 08:00–20:00, reservation required — no listed slot under 6 |
| Dinner | Ordered into the room | Room service still offered; breakfast served at Silk Road Dining or Flying Stag for a fee |
| Getting out | Caught a bus from the stop in front | Nara Kotsu stops "Mikasa Chugakko-mae" and "Nara Shiyakusho-mae" are right by the hotel; a hotel shuttle also runs to Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara (10:00–17:30, every 30 min, subject to change) |
| Arrival | Rental car from Itami Airport | On-site self-parking ¥2,000/day; valet ¥5,000/stay |
Dinner in the room, because we had children with us
We had our children with us in July 2021, so instead of managing a restaurant booking around bedtime, we ordered dinner into the room.

What arrived was a three-tier appetizer stand and a pot of rice cooked with sweetcorn kernels mixed through.

Room service is still offered at the hotel today (checked October 2026), and breakfast runs through Silk Road Dining and Flying Stag rather than a dedicated breakfast room, with an additional charge on top of the room rate. If eating in is part of your plan with children, that's worth knowing before you book rather than after check-in.
The pool: children can swim, but only in set hours
In July 2021 we used the pool with our children, then a primary-schooler and a preschooler. It's an indoor pool, so the weather outside doesn't decide whether it happens.
The rule that decides who this works for today is a set of age cut-offs. On the hotel's own experiences page (checked October 2026), the pool opens to children only from age 6 — ages 6 to 15, 08:00 to 20:00, with an advance reservation — and there's no listed slot for anyone younger. Don't promise a small child the pool on the strength of our stay; ask the hotel first. If your children are all five or younger under today's rule, the pool isn't a reason to book — a park-side property changes your evenings instead, covered in our Nara area guide.
Getting there by car from Itami, and out by bus from the door
We drove in with a rental car from Itami Airport, which meant we skipped the train station entirely on arrival — but we still caught a bus from the stop in front of the hotel to get into town for sightseeing, and that worked well for us.
By train, the hotel is a 9-min walk from Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station, one stop short of the better-known Kintetsu Nara terminus (the exit isn't named on that page). For onward travel, the Nara Kotsu bus stops "Mikasa Chugakko-mae" and "Nara Shiyakusho-mae" sit right by the hotel, and a hotel shuttle also runs to Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara — 10:00–17:30, every 30 minutes, though the page notes times can change, so we'd confirm the current schedule with the front desk rather than assume it's unchanged since 2021. Deciding between Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara as a base in the first place? Our Kintetsu Nara vs JR Nara guide covers that.
If you're driving, as we did, the hotel runs on-site self-parking at ¥2,000 per day or valet at ¥5,000 per stay, with an EV charging point available (checked October 2026) — worth budgeting into a Kansai road trip that also takes in Kyoto or Osaka.
The building: Japan's first JW Marriott
JW Marriott Hotel Nara opened on 22 July 2020 as the brand's first property in Japan, with 158 rooms, built beside the Nara Convention Center at Shin-Omiya. The brand's only other Japan property, JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo, opened at Takanawa Gateway City in October 2025.
Of the pool's 13 weekday opening hours (08:00–21:00; Saturday to 22:00), children aged 6–15 may use 12 of them (08:00–20:00), and the hotel's pages list no slot for anyone younger (checked October 2026).

The public spaces carry Nara's deer motif through the building: a bar counter under an ink-brush painting of a deer, and the hotel's own bar and lounge, Flying Stag, which serves afternoon tea by day and cocktails by night (checked October 2026). A bonsai display sits beside a lattice-screened staircase in the lobby — a quieter look than the convention-center address outside might suggest.

Who should book
- Families with children aged 6 and older who want the pool as part of the stay. That's the age band the current rules actually admit.
- Anyone touring Kansai by rental car. We arrived from Itami Airport by car, and on-site parking makes the hotel a straightforward base rather than a station-dependent one.
- Families who'd rather eat dinner in the room than manage a restaurant booking at night. We did this with our children in July 2021, and room service is still offered today.
- Marriott Bonvoy members who want a JW property in the Kansai region. Nara was the brand's first hotel in Japan (July 2020); the only other, JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo, opened at Takanawa Gateway City in October 2025. Check current rates at JW Marriott Hotel Nara before you decide between this and a park-side stay.
Who should not
Travelers who want to walk to the deer and Nara Park at first light should look elsewhere — Shin-Omiya is west of that area, one stop or a shuttle ride away, and this isn't a hotel you choose for its walk-in access to Nara's temples. Families whose children are all five or younger, under today's pool rule, lose that as a reason to book here. And if Nara is a day trip rather than an overnight stay, compare park-side stays instead in our Nara luxury hotels roundup; for how Japan's top-end hotels are sold more broadly, see our wider guide.
| If this is you | JW Marriott Hotel Nara? | Why, or where instead |

| Children 5 and under only | No | Pool is off the table — weigh a park-side hotel instead |

FAQ: JW Marriott Nara review
Is JW Marriott Nara worth it with kids?
We think so, if the pool suits your children's ages. We stayed in July 2021 — two adults, one primary-school child and one preschooler — used the pool as a family and ordered dinner into the room instead of going out. The hotel's pages open the pool only from age 6 (ages 6–15, 08:00–20:00, checked October 2026), so if you have a child under 6, that rule, not our stay, decides the answer.
Can children use the pool at JW Marriott Hotel Nara?
Yes, but only within set hours. As of our check in October 2026, the hotel's pages open the indoor pool to children aged 6 to 15 between 08:00 and 20:00 with an advance reservation, and list no slot for anyone younger.
How far is JW Marriott Hotel Nara from the station and from Nara Park?
The hotel is a 9-min walk from Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station, with Nara Kotsu bus stops right by the hotel and a hotel shuttle to Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara for onward travel. Nara Park itself is further east, on the far side of Kintetsu Nara Station, one stop or a shuttle ride away — this is not a park-side hotel, so budget for that ride if the deer and the park are the point of your day.
Can a family of four stay in one room at JW Marriott Hotel Nara?
We did, as a family of four — two adults, one primary-school child and one preschooler — in an Executive Premium Room in July 2021. We couldn't find this room category on Marriott's current room pages (checked October 2026), so its occupancy is unconfirmed; small children going uncounted toward a room's stated occupancy is common at Japanese hotels, but ask the hotel to be sure.
