By rental car: winter-road cautions and the Yamanaka Bokujo soft-serve stop

Driving from Sapporo to Yoichi takes about 60–70 minutes in summer via National Route 5 along the coast through Otaru. In winter, allow more time: the coastal road between Otaru and Yoichi can accumulate ice and snow, studded tyres or snow tyres are mandatory on Hokkaido roads in winter, and conditions on the Otaru–Yoichi stretch can deteriorate quickly after snowfall.
