To-ji at 15:07, Daigo-ji at 18:05: One Kyoto Day
We stood at To-ji at 15:07 and inside Daigo-ji's light-up at 18:05, a gap of 2h58. How to build the day, with 2026 dates, hours and the ¥1,500 ticket.
Yes, you can do both in one day: on 21 November 2021 we were at To-ji at 15:07 and inside Daigo-ji's evening light-up at 18:05, a gap of 2 hours 58 minutes. The recipe is a daylight temple in the south-west of Kyoto, then a transfer east on the Tozai subway line, then a night garden that opens at dusk. Daigo-ji's 2026 night viewing runs 20 November to 6 December, 18:00 to 20:50, with last entry at 20:10 (checked October 2026), so the pair only works on those dates. For a base that makes the transfer easy, DoubleTree by Hilton Kyoto Station is a few minutes' walk from the Hachijo side of the station, the exit you want for To-ji.
Why the south of Kyoto works as an afternoon
The south and east of Kyoto fit the hours when the famous northern temples are closing. Many Kyoto temples stop admitting visitors around 16:30 to 17:00, so a day built on the north (Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji) is usually over by late afternoon. To-ji still has daylight to use at 15:00, and Daigo-ji does not even start until the sun is down. That makes a one-day pair that does not fight for the same hours.
This guide covers only how to assemble the day. For which light-up is worth your evening in the first place, see our comparison of Kyoto's autumn night illuminations.
| Place | Our time (21 Nov 2021) | Light | What it costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| To-ji: pagoda and ginkgo | 15:07 | Daylight, overcast | ¥800 for the Kondo and Kodo halls; ¥1,200 with the pagoda's ground floor when open (official 2026 rates) |
| Transfer east | Not logged | Dusk | Fare: check the operator (Kyoto City Transportation Bureau for the subway) |
| Daigo-ji night viewing | 18:05 | Light-up, pond reflections | 2026 night ticket ¥1,500 (2025: ¥1,300) |
Our only fixed points are the two photo times. We did not log the hours between them, so the next sections give the official routes rather than our own stopwatch.

To-ji at 15:07: the pagoda and the ginkgo
To-ji's five-storied pagoda and a ginkgo tree share one frame in our photograph, the ginkgo gone yellow by late November. We stood there at 15:07 on a cloudy Sunday afternoon, and the grey sky did the pagoda no harm: the yellow reads cleaner against a flat sky than against harsh sun.
Check the hours before you plan the afternoon. The temple's official admission page lists the Kondo and Kodo halls as open 8:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, while the grounds open at 5:00 and close at 17:00. In 2026 the autumn special opening of the Homotsukan treasure hall and the pagoda's ground floor runs 31 October to 25 November, and the pagoda's ground floor alone from 26 November to 13 December. The hall tickets are ¥800 for adults, ¥1,200 when the pagoda is open (checked October 2026, official site, Japanese page).
To-ji also runs its own autumn light-up with a night opening of the Kondo and Kodo, 31 October to 13 December 2026, at ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for high school students (checked October 2026). We did not see it in 2021, so we cannot tell you how it compares. If you want To-ji by night as well, that is a different day plan from this one.
The three hours in between
The honest summary of our 2 hours 58 minutes is that it was enough, and that the transfer is the smaller part of it. Daigo-ji's own access page gives the options: from Kyoto Station, the JR Tokaido Line to Yamashina takes about 5 minutes, then the Tozai subway to Daigo Station about 10 minutes, then roughly 10 minutes on foot from exit 2. There is also a dedicated Daigo-ji bus from stop H4 on the Hachijo side of Kyoto Station, about 30 minutes (Daigo-ji access page, checked October 2026).
To-ji sits about 15 minutes' walk from Kyoto Station's Hachijo exit, or 10 minutes from Toji Station on the Kintetsu line (To-ji access page, checked October 2026). So a workable shape for the middle is: walk or ride back to Kyoto Station, eat, drop bags at the hotel if you are staying nearby, then head east with the light-up queue in mind. For fares and the last trains, use the Kyoto City Transportation Bureau and the JR timetable rather than a number from us.
Daigo-ji at 18:05
We went in at 18:05. The part that stays in the memory is the lit Benten-do and its bridge, doubled in the pond. That was in 2021, when the night viewing ran 12 November to 5 December; we have not seen it since, so treat later years' detail as the temple's to tell.
For 2026, the facts are these. The night viewing runs 20 November to 6 December, 18:00 to 20:50 with last entry at 20:10, in the temple precinct (garan), at ¥1,500 for junior high school students and older and ¥1,200 for groups of 20 or more. Day and night visitors are fully separated, so you cannot stay on from a daytime visit; you leave and come back in (Kyoto City Tourism Association listing, checked October 2026). The temple's own news page still showed only the 2025 notice in October 2026, because it posts on the first day of the run; in 2025 that notice gave ¥1,300 and free entry for primary school children and under.
One number sets the shape of the day: between our To-ji photograph at 15:07 and our Daigo-ji photograph at 18:05 there were 2 hours 58 minutes, and the 2026 Daigo-ji last entry (20:10) is 2 hours 5 minutes after an 18:05 arrival, so the evening has slack (checked October 2026).
Where to sleep to make this day easy
Stay near Kyoto Station. It is the point where the To-ji walk, the Yamashina transfer and the Hachijo bus all meet, and you can put bags down between the two stops. If you have not picked a base yet, start with where to stay in Kyoto for autumn leaves and the broader hotels near Kyoto Station guide.
| Name | Area | Why it suits this day |
|---|---|---|
| DoubleTree by Hilton Kyoto Station | Hachijo side of Kyoto Station | About 5 minutes' walk from the Hachijo exit (hotel's own address, checked October 2026), and the To-ji side of the station |
| Dormy Inn Premium Kyoto Ekimae | Kyoto Station, central exit | About 3 minutes' walk from the central exit; a hot-spring bath on the top floor for after a long day |
| Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Ekimae Premier | Kyoto Station area | Simple, close to the station for a quick bag drop between the two stops |
We have not checked rates for these dates. Autumn evenings sell out far ahead, so put your own dates into the booking page before you plan around any of them.

FAQ: combining To-ji and Daigo-ji
Is the subway enough?
Mostly. For Daigo-ji, Daigo Station on the Tozai line is the official route, about 10 minutes' walk from exit 2, reached from Kyoto Station via a roughly 5-minute JR hop to Yamashina and a roughly 10-minute subway ride. To-ji is not on a subway line; it is a 15-minute walk from the Hachijo exit or 10 minutes from Kintetsu Toji Station. We got from one to the other in time for a 18:05 entry.
Can I add Fushimi Inari?
Probably, but not in the same afternoon as To-ji if you want to be inside Daigo-ji at 18:00. Fushimi Inari is right next to Inari Station, two stops and about 5 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line, so the travel is easy; the time goes on the walk up the mountain (shrine access page, checked October 2026). Our 2 hours 58 minutes between To-ji and Daigo-ji had no room for it, so do Fushimi Inari in the morning or swap it for To-ji.
What if the light-up sells out?
We have no evidence of Daigo-ji selling out; the temple's 2025 notice described tickets sold at the site with last entry at 20:10, and the 2026 listing does not mention advance booking either. Check daigoji.or.jp before you go in case that changes. The fallback is To-ji's own night opening, 31 October to 13 December 2026 at ¥1,000 (checked October 2026).
Is the 2026 Daigo-ji night viewing confirmed?
Yes. The 2026 run is 20 November to 6 December, 18:00 to 20:50, ¥1,500, on the Kyoto City Tourism Association listing (checked October 2026). The temple itself posts its notice on the first day of the run, so daigoji.or.jp may still show 2025 until 20 November. For comparison, 2025 ran 22 November to 7 December and the 2021 run we attended was 12 November to 5 December.
