Shibuya Station Exits Guide: Lines, Landmarks & Nearest Hotels

A practical Shibuya station exits guide: all 9 lines, Hachiko/West/East/New South exits explained, walk times to top hotels, and luggage tips.

This Shibuya station exits guide cuts through the confusion: which of nine rail lines uses which platform, which exit walks you closest to your hotel, and how to handle luggage when you arrive. Shibuya Station went through its biggest reconfiguration in decades during the ongoing redevelopment — including a relocated Hachiko Exit in January 2025 — so screenshots from older travel blogs are often wrong. Allow ten extra minutes on your first transit and use this page as a reference before you land.

Shibuya Station after redevelopment — why it's easy to get lost

Shibuya has been under construction since the early 2010s in what city planners call a "once-in-a-century" redevelopment. Entire buildings came down, walkways were rerouted and platforms relocated. The result for visitors is a station where the signage changes faster than travel guides update, and where what looks like a simple exit can turn into a ten-minute maze.

The Hachiko Exit — the exit most tourists use to reach the Scramble Crossing — moved to a new position on January 26, 2025, shifting roughly 60 m toward the Miyamasuzaka and Hikarie side of the station. Any map dated before that change may show the old location.

Phase II of the Scramble Square redevelopment (the Central and West towers) began construction in May 2025 and runs through 2031. During this period, some temporary overhead walkways and ground-level paths will shift. The station itself posts bilingual signage updates on its boards — follow the colour-coded overhead signs, not a cached map on your phone.

The lines at Shibuya: JR, Tokyo Metro, Tokyu and Keio

Nine lines cross Shibuya Station across four rail operators. Mixing up which operator's gate you enter leads to a double fare and a wasted twenty minutes.

  • JR East — three lines: the Yamanote Line (circular route around central Tokyo), the Saikyo and Rinkai Lines (northwest toward Shinjuku and Ikebukuro, and southeast toward Osaki), and the Shonan-Shinjuku Line (southwest toward Yokohama). JR platforms are on the 2nd floor. The Narita Express (NEx) also calls at Shibuya from Narita Airport on the same JR tracks.
  • Tokyo Metro — three lines: the Ginza Line (above ground, 3rd floor), the Hanzomon Line (underground, B3F), and the Fukutoshin Line (underground, B5F). All three have separate fare gates from JR.
  • Tokyu Corporation — two lines: the Toyoko Line (southwest toward Yokohama, shares platforms with the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line) and the Den-en-toshi Line (south and west toward Futako-Tamagawa, shares platforms with the Hanzomon Line).
  • Keio Corporation — one line: the Inokashira Line running southwest to Shimokitazawa and Kichijoji. Its platforms are on the 2nd floor inside Shibuya Mark City on the west side of the station.

JR fare gates are separate from Tokyo Metro and Tokyu gates. IC cards (Suica, PASMO) handle all lines without separate paper tickets, but you must tap in and out at each operator's barrier when switching networks.

Key exits at a glance

The table covers the five exits that matter most for visitors. Walk times are approximate and assume a direct, uncongested path.

Exit Operator / Side What's near it Walk to main landmark
Hachiko Exit JR — Hachiko side, relocated Jan 2025 Scramble Crossing, Hachiko statue, Center Gai, Shibuya 109, Mark City access 1-min walk to the crossing
West Exit JR / Keio Inokashira (Mark City) — southwest Shibuya Mark City, Dogenzaka, bus terminal, Cerulean Tower side 5-min walk to Cerulean Tower
Miyamasuzaka Exit JR — northeast Hikarie, MIYASHITA PARK, Scramble Square, Shibuya SKY entrance 3-min walk to Hikarie
New South Exit JR Saikyo / Shonan-Shinjuku — south Shibuya Stream, Daikanyama direction, NEx and airport-line platform Directly into Shibuya Stream
Metro Exit A2 Tokyo Metro Ginza Line — street level Scramble Crossing (south side), Shibuya 109 1-min walk to crossing

Which exit for your hotel (quick lookup)

Most Shibuya hotels fall into one of four zones. Here is the fastest decision tree:

  • Scramble Crossing and Center Gai side (Hachiko Exit): the majority of mid-range business hotels sit within a 5-min walk north and west of the crossing. Take the Hachiko Exit from JR, or Metro Exit B5 if you are on the Hanzomon or Fukutoshin lines. Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is inside Shibuya Mark City, directly connected to the JR gates — under a 3-min walk from the Yamanote Line platform.
  • Cerulean Tower / Sakuragaoka side (West Exit): the south-southwest end of the station is quieter and higher-end. Take the JR West Exit and head downhill on Sakuragaoka-cho. Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel is approximately a 5-min walk from the exit. This side also has fewer large crowds at night.
  • Hikarie and MIYASHITA PARK side (Miyamasuzaka Exit): the east and northeast side has newer, design-conscious properties near the park and Omotesando. Take the JR Miyamasuzaka Exit, or Metro Exit C2 for the Hikarie underground connection. sequence MIYASHITA PARK is roughly a 5-min walk from the Miyamasuzaka Exit heading north along Meiji-dori.
  • Shibuya Stream and south side (New South Exit): the best exit if you arrive on the Saikyo, Shonan-Shinjuku Line or Narita Express. Shibuya Stream Hotel connects directly to the New South Exit — no street crossing needed. JR-East Hotel Mets Shibuya is a 4-min walk from the New South Gate.

Arriving via Tokyo Metro Hanzomon or Den-en-toshi lines? Exit B3 surfaces close to the Scramble on the south side. Exit C2 surfaces next to Hikarie on the east side. Neither requires you to pass through JR fare gates.

Luggage, lockers and first-time arrival tips

Shibuya Station has over 1,000 coin lockers spread across multiple operators' concourses. The challenge is finding one that is not already full.

  • Near the Hachiko Gate (JR): lockers are just inside the JR ticket gate, near the Yamanote Line escalators. Very convenient but fill up from early morning. Check before committing to a walk.
  • Shibuya Mark City (B1F East Mall and 4F West Mall): larger lockers here with suitcase-friendly sizes, accessible without a rail ticket. Useful for dropping bags before check-in time.
  • Keio Inokashira Line concourse: a smaller bank of lockers on the Mark City 2nd floor, often missed by tourists and therefore more likely to have space in the afternoon.
  • SPACER smart lockers: QR-code-operated lockers at several spots around the station that let you check real-time availability via app, reserve in advance and pay cashless. Useful if you arrive during peak hours.

Payment: key-type lockers accept coins only. Touchscreen-type lockers accept Suica, PASMO and most IC travel cards. Small lockers run around ¥400, large suitcase-sized ones ¥700–900 per use; rates vary by location.

A few practical notes for first arrivals:

  • From Narita via NEx: the Narita Express platforms are on the JR Saikyo/Shonan-Shinjuku side of the station. Your exit is the New South Exit. Budget a 4-min walk to most hotels in that zone.
  • From Haneda: the quickest route is Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa, then JR Yamanote Line to Shibuya (Hachiko Exit side). The journey takes around 30 min from Haneda Terminal 1–3.
  • Large suitcases and gates: standard JR turnstiles fit a carry-on but not a large wheeled case. Wide-gate lanes (clearly signed) are available at every fare barrier and accept all IC cards.
  • Early check-in: most hotels in Shibuya set check-in at 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM. If you arrive earlier, luggage can go into lockers or a paid luggage storage service such as ecbo cloak, available at several spots near the station.
