United begins the first nonstop flight between the continental United States and Sapporo on 11 December 2026. The San Francisco to Sapporo direct flight runs on a Boeing 787-9, three days a week: outbound from SFO on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and back from New Chitose (CTS) on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. What that changes for a ski trip is straightforward — Hokkaido stops being a connection through Tokyo or Seoul. It is also a single winter season, 11 December 2026 through 27 March 2027, and United has not said whether it comes back the following year. On price: saver award economy started at 55,000 miles one way and climbed as high as 150,000 depending on the date, and a paid economy fare ran about US$1,100 one way when we checked in August 2026.

What is actually flying

United's new nonstop is flight UA234 westbound and UA235 eastbound, both flown on a 257-seat Boeing 787-9, per United's launch announcement (checked August 2026).

UA234 leaves San Francisco at 10:30am and lands in Sapporo at 2:15pm the next day, a flight of 10 hours 45 minutes. Leave SFO on a Friday at 10:30am and you touch down in Sapporo on Saturday afternoon — the International Date Line adds a calendar day, and every later plan in this series assumes you have that straight. The return, UA235, leaves New Chitose at 4:15pm and lands back in San Francisco around 8:25am the same calendar day, a shorter 9 hours 5 minutes. The gap between the two durations is the jet stream: westbound flights punch into it, eastbound flights ride it.

The schedule

Three flights a week each way is the whole schedule for the season — there is no daily service to fall back on, so plans have to be built around the specific days below.

CTS to SFO (UA235)Mon, Thu, Sat4:15pm CTS~8:25am SFO (same day)9h05

The season runs 11 December 2026 to 27 March 2027. The last westbound departure from San Francisco is Friday 26 March 2027, landing in Sapporo on Saturday 27 March; the last eastbound departure from New Chitose is that same Saturday, 27 March 2027, arriving in San Francisco the same calendar day. Nothing about the days of the week or the season dates has changed since United's original announcement in May 2026, as of our check in August 2026.

Why three flights a week changes how you plan

A trip length on this route is not a free choice — it is set by the gap between an outbound day and a return day. Fly out on a Sunday and the nearest return options land 1, 4, or 6 nights later; fly out on a Wednesday or a Friday and the arithmetic shifts again. Some of those gaps make an awkward trip and some make a good one, and which is which depends entirely on which outbound day you pick. We ran every combination the season allows in how many nights a Hokkaido ski trip from San Francisco actually takes, including the one departure-and-return pair that turns out to be both the cheapest in miles and the best use of the calendar.

What it costs

Award economy on this route is not one number — it is a range, and which end of the range you land on depends almost entirely on the date you fly, not on how far ahead you book. We checked every date United's award calendar would price for this route in August 2026 — 89 outbound dates and 148 return dates. The 55,000-mile saver fare appeared on 14 of those outbound dates and 32 of the return dates — every single one of them a day the route actually operates. Fares of 60,500 miles and above clustered on the days in between, when the seat is really booking a connection rather than the nonstop. One fare, 119,800 miles, showed up on seven dates, and all seven were Fridays — the most convenient departure day of the three is also the one most likely to price at the top of the range. Over the holiday stretch, 18 December through 3 January, saver space thinned out to 100,000–150,000 miles, and two dates, 29 and 31 December, had no award space at all.

Paid economy ran about US$1,100 one way on the date we checked (August 2026), which puts the 55,000-mile saver fare at roughly 2.0 cents of value per mile and the 119,800-mile fare at closer to 0.92 cents — a meaningfully worse trade for the exact same seat. On taxes: westbound carries about ¥900, but the eastbound leg carries Japan's outbound passenger taxes, ¥9,570 to ¥12,070. A round trip booked at the 110,000-mile saver level therefore comes with roughly ¥10,500 in taxes and fees, not the far smaller figure some fare calculators suggest. The full day-by-day calendar, plus how to read United's award chart before it changes, is in United award seats from San Francisco to Sapporo: what 89 dates actually cost. If the direct flight's three-day-a-week schedule doesn't line up with your dates at any price, connecting through Tokyo remains the fallback — we compare the two directly in San Francisco to Sapporo: direct versus via Tokyo.

Landing at New Chitose as an international arrival

New Chitose's international and domestic terminals are separate buildings joined by an indoor connecting passageway, so an international arrival lands a short walk away from — not next to — the trains, buses and food floor, which are all on the domestic side. How long immigration, baggage claim, and the terminal crossing take on a winter afternoon is not published, and this route has not flown yet — we work through what is and is not known in New Chitose Airport for international arrivals. For the first meal after landing, our existing New Chitose Airport food guide covers what's on offer once you're through to the domestic side.

Where the route can take you

New Chitose is the gateway, not the destination, and how far you go from the airport on landing day is a different question for each place below.

DestinationRelative to the airportGuide
SapporoClosest base; the JR Rapid Airport train covers it in well under an hourWhere to stay for skiing in Japan
OtaruSame JR line as Sapporo, further down itGetting to Kiroro from New Chitose
KiroroInland from Otaru; usually reached by road transfer or rental carGetting to Kiroro from New Chitose
NisekoFurthest west of the group; a longer transfer than KiroroWhere to stay for skiing in Japan
RusutsuSimilar direction to Niseko, a shorter runWhere to stay in Rusutsu
TomamuA different direction entirely, inland to the eastWhere to stay in Tomamu

This pillar does not rank hotels in any of those places — the guides linked above do that, and the arrival-night question specifically (what you can realistically reach on a 2:15pm landing) has its own dedicated article rather than a summary here.

FAQ: San Francisco to Sapporo

Does United fly San Francisco to Sapporo every day?

No. The route operates three days a week in each direction: outbound from SFO on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and return from CTS on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. There is no daily service on this route for the 2026-27 season, and any itinerary has to be built around those specific days.

How long is the flight from San Francisco to Sapporo?

Westbound (SFO to CTS) takes 10 hours 45 minutes because the flight is pushing into the jet stream. Eastbound (CTS to SFO) is shorter, 9 hours 5 minutes, riding the same jet stream home. Both figures are block times for UA234/UA235 on the Boeing 787-9, checked August 2026.

How many miles does it cost to fly this route on points?

Saver award economy started at 55,000 miles one way in every case we checked, and only appeared on the days the nonstop actually flies. Fares above that, up to 150,000 miles, showed up on non-operating days or during the December-January holiday stretch, so the number you see depends heavily on which date you search, not just how far ahead you book.

Will this route come back for winter 2027-28?

United has not announced anything beyond the single 11 December 2026 to 27 March 2027 season, as of our check in August 2026. Seasonal routes like this one are extended, shortened, or dropped based on how the first season performs, so nothing about a second year is confirmed either way.
