Portom International Hokkaido: The Hotel Inside New Chitose Airport

Portom International Hokkaido sits on the fourth floor of the international terminal at New Chitose Airport — a 3-min walk from the international arrivals lobby, without stepping outside. It has 171 rooms running from 43 m² to 250 m², its own hot spring bath, and a French restaurant overseen by a Michelin-starred chef. Rates start from ¥40,000 per night and vary sharply by season and room type. The one thing that should change your mind: if you only need a bed before a 6:30 am domestic departure, this is the wrong hotel and there are cheaper options in the domestic terminal.

A hotel inside the terminal, not beside it

Most "airport hotels" are a shuttle ride away, or connected by a covered walkway across a road. Portom International Hokkaido is inside the building: the hotel occupies the upper floors of New Chitose Airport's International Passenger Terminal, and the official listing places arrivals within a three-minute walk of the lobby. You clear immigration, walk, and check in.

That matters most in winter. New Chitose is Hokkaido's weather-exposed gateway, and the difference between a hotel you reach on foot indoors and one you reach by shuttle in a snowstorm is not a small one. Rooms: 43 m² at the entry level

There are 171 rooms. The entry-level Superia rooms are listed at 43 m², which is generous by Japanese standards — a city hotel room at this price point is usually smaller. From there the range extends to suites of up to 250 m², grouped into five design families: Sukiya, Rinpa, Zen, Portom and Junior.

Rooms are furnished with Japanese art. Check current rates for Portom International Hokkaido — the gap between the entry room and the top suites is wide, and the season moves both.

The onsen here is not the airport onsen

This confuses people, so it is worth stating plainly: there are two separate hot spring facilities at New Chitose Airport, and they are not the same thing.

• Portom's own hot spring bath — on site, for hotel guests, in the international terminal
• New Chitose Airport Onsen — a separate public facility in the domestic terminal, with a walk-in fee of ¥2,600

Dining is the part that is genuinely unusual

An airport hotel with a Michelin-starred chef's restaurant is not a common arrangement anywhere. Portom lists four venues:

The cigar bar, and why it is now unusual in Japan

Japan's revised Health Promotion Act took full effect on 1 April 2020, making indoor spaces non-smoking by default. Hotel guest rooms were left outside the regulation, but shared indoor areas — lobbies, banquet halls, restaurants — became non-smoking unless the operator builds a compliant dedicated smoking room with sealed ventilation. Most hotels did not build one. That, rather than any outright ban, is why a hotel where you can sit down and smoke a cigar has become hard to find in Japan.

Portom kept one. THE CIGAR BAR sits on the 8th floor alongside THE BAR, which the hotel lists as open 18:00–24:00 (last food order 23:00, last drinks 23:30). Seating is small: 9 counter seats and 12 table seats. The hotel describes its selection as Havana and other cigars, and publishes a separate cigar menu.

Three things the hotel does not publish, which are worth a phone call before you plan an evening around it: prices, whether reservations are taken, and whether non-guests may use the bar. Given 21 seats total, a walk-in on a winter Saturday is not a safe assumption.

Getting here: the Singapore route is seasonal

If you are flying in from Southeast Asia, the timing of your trip determines whether you can reach this hotel without a domestic connection.

Singapore Airlines flies Singapore–New Chitose non-stop from late November 2026 through the end of February 2027 — daily in December and January, three times weekly in February. The route first launched in 2014, and this is its longest season so far, covering both Lunar New Year and, for the first time, the Sapporo Snow Festival. Outside that window there is no non-stop: Scoot serves Sapporo year-round but routes via Taipei, going daily from 21 November 2026.

The practical consequence is simple. In deep winter you land at the international terminal and walk to the hotel. Outside the season you arrive via Tokyo or Taipei, and the walk-from-arrivals advantage applies only to the final leg.

For onward travel with luggage, a chartered car is worth arranging in advance. MK Taxi Sapporo runs airport transfers and charters with English, Chinese and Korean-speaking drivers, and lists vehicles up to a HiAce Grand Cabin for groups. When this is the wrong hotel

Being honest about this is more useful than a list of amenities. Portom is a full-service luxury hotel that happens to be in an airport. It is not an efficient place to sleep before an early flight.
