- Description: Zao's colour descends the mountain over two to three weeks; Naruko Gorge peaks in about ten days. With fixed dates, that is the whole decision.

Zao vs Naruko is a choice between height and depth. Zao is a mountain you ride up — a ropeway lifts you through the colour and out the top of it — so the season comes down the slope over roughly fifty days and you can catch it at whatever stage your dates land on. Naruko is a gorge you look into, a narrower target with a sharper peak. Zao starts colouring at the summit in late September and finishes at the base in early November; Naruko is late October into early November, and both work from Sendai, where a room starts around from ¥11,000 for two. Our picks: [Takamiya Ryokan Miyamaso](https://www.trip.com/hotels/yamagata-city-hotel-detail-1635674/takamiya-ryokan-miyamaso/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=zao-vs-naruko-autumn-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19463166&ref=nipponstays.com) at the Zao lift base, or [Naruko Hotel](https://www.trip.com/hotels/osaki-hotel-detail-21830374/naruko-hotel/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=zao-vs-naruko-autumn-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19463040&ref=nipponstays.com) in the gorge town.

## Height versus gorge

The mechanics of seeing the colour are different, and that is what to choose on.

**Zao is vertical.** The ropeway runs from about 855 m at the base, through an intermediate station at 1,331 m, to 1,661 m at the top — a climb of about 806 m in a few minutes. Those three stations are the point: they sit far enough apart that in the middle of the season each one is at a different stage, so a single ride takes you from bare or nearly bare at the top, through peak, to still-green below. The viewing is from above and from the cabin.

**Naruko is horizontal.** Naruko Gorge is a steep-sided valley with a walking path and viewpoints along the rim, and the classic view looks down and along it. There is no mechanical assistance and no altitude ladder — the gorge is in colour or it is not.

| Area | How you see it | Window | Access from Sendai |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Zao | Ropeway 855 m → 1,331 m → 1,661 m, through the colour | Late Sept at the summit to early Nov at the base — about 50 days | Bus or rail plus bus |
| Naruko Gorge | Rim path and viewpoints looking into the valley | Sharper peak, roughly a week to ten days | Rail on the Rikuu East line, then a short bus or walk |

We have not been to either in autumn. What follows is built from published timing and access rather than from a visit, and journey details need checking against current schedules.

## The ropeway is a longer window

This is the strongest practical argument for Zao if your dates are not flexible. The colour begins around the 1,661 m summit station in late September and works down to the onsen village at 855 m by early November — **roughly fifty days from first to last**. Arrive early in that span and the summit is already past while the mid-station is perfect; arrive late and the mid-station is bare while the base is at its best. There is almost always a stage of it somewhere on the ropeway.

It is the national pattern in miniature — the same wave from high ground to low that moves autumn across Japan over about nine weeks, compressed into one mountain and seven.

Naruko does not offer that. It is a single elevation band, so the peak is sharper and a visit a week either side of it is materially worse. If you are booking months ahead with fixed dates, that is a real difference in risk.

## What each one is for

**Zao suits a trip where the mountain is the outing.** Ride up, walk at the top or the mid-station, ride down, then use the onsen village at the base in the evening. It is a full day with a clear shape.

**Naruko suits a trip built around the town.** Naruko Onsen is a working hot spring town with a long history of kokeshi woodcraft, and the gorge is a half-day within a stay rather than the whole reason for it.

Both have onsen at the base, which is why this comparison is not "mountain or bath" — it is "which shape of day", with a bath at the end either way.

## Getting there from Sendai

Sendai is the obvious base for both. Zao is reached by bus from Sendai or via Yamagata depending on which side of the mountain you are aiming for — the ropeway and the onsen village are on the Yamagata side, which catches people out. The ropeway runs in two stages and is priced to your destination rather than by segment: **¥2,200 return as far as Juhyo Kogen at 1,331 m, or ¥4,400 return all the way to Jizo Sancho at 1,661 m**. The lower line runs 8:30–17:00 and the upper 8:45–16:45, but the figure that governs your day is the **last up-service from the base at 16:00** (checked August 2026). Naruko is on the Rikuu East line from Furukawa, reached from Sendai on the shinkansen or local services.

**Check which side of Zao your plan is on before you book anything**, and confirm current bus timetables — mountain services are seasonal and thin out quickly once the colour is over.

## Which one to sleep in

**Sleep at Zao Onsen** if you want the first ropeway of the day. The village sits at the base of the lift, and being there overnight is the difference between riding up at nine and riding up at eleven with everyone else.

**Sleep at Naruko Onsen** if the town is part of the appeal. It functions as a destination in its own right, with baths, craft shops and somewhere to eat — the gorge is what you do in the morning.

**Sleep in Sendai** if this is one or two days inside a wider Tohoku trip. You lose the early ropeway and the onsen evening, but you keep a city with restaurants and rail connections in every direction.

These are normal-season from-rates at two guests, and both onsen areas price up for the autumn window. Treat the number as a way of ranking the options rather than as a price, and put your own dates in. The middle column is a band rather than a rate. The Zao rows all sit at the 855 m base, which is the point: sleeping at the lift is what buys you the first ropeway. Our guide to [using Sendai as a base for Tohoku day trips](https://www.nipponstays.com/sendai-base-for-tohoku-day-trips/) covers the year-round version of that question, and [our autumn timing guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-autumn-leaves-when-and-where/) places southern Tohoku against the rest of the country.

## One mountain, three weeks

The reason to prefer Zao when your dates are fixed: **the ropeway spans about 806 m of height — 855 m at the base to 1,661 m at the top — and the colour takes roughly fifty days to come down it, against a window of about a week to ten days in the gorge** (checked August 2026). That is a five-fold difference in how much your dates have to be right. Both peak in the same fortnight, but one of them forgives you for being a month out and the other does not forgive a week.

## Trip Essentials for Japan

Things worth booking before you land, all in English:

- **eSIM** — [Airalo's Japan eSIM](https://airalo.tpm.lv/2TWpibQS?ref=nipponstays.com): install it at home and data works as soon as you switch off airplane mode at Haneda, Narita, Kansai, or wherever you land.
- **Tickets and day trips** — [Klook](https://klook.tpm.lv/8wzTeLyt?ref=nipponstays.com) covers the Japan Rail Pass, teamLab tickets, and shinkansen-linked day trips; booking ahead skips the ticket-window line.

## FAQ: Zao and Naruko in autumn

### Do they turn at different times?

They overlap, but Zao's window is far wider. The mountain colours from the 1,661 m summit in late September down to the 855 m base by early November — about fifty days — while Naruko Gorge has a sharper peak of roughly a week to ten days. If your dates are fixed months ahead, Zao is the lower-risk booking by a wide margin.

### Can I do either as a day trip from Sendai?

Yes, both — but each fills a day. Doing both in one trip means either two day trips from Sendai or a night at each, and the bus timetables rather than the distances are what constrain it.

### Which is better for an early start?

Zao, and only if you sleep at the base. The first ropeway carries a fraction of the mid-morning load, and the difference in what you see from the cabin is real.

### Which is better in the rain?

Naruko. A gorge viewpoint in cloud still works, and the town gives you baths and craft shops when it does not. On the Zao side, poor visibility takes away the reason you rode up.
