- Description: Where to stay in Nozawa Onsen: gondola-side lodges for first lift, or village-core ryokan near the 13 public baths — the hill decides it.

Where to stay in Nozawa Onsen comes down to one hill and two gondolas. If you're arriving with a suitcase and want to be on the first lift of the day, book the Nagasaka side — a lodge like [Altitude Nozawa](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-9384626/altitude-nozawa/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740163&ref=nipponstays.com) puts you inside a 5-min walk of the gondola and skips the free shuttle entirely. If evening bath-hopping, restaurant choice, and a proper ryokan dinner matter more than ten extra minutes each morning, stay in the village core near Oyu instead, where [Ryokan Sakaya](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-1584557/ryokan-sakaya/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740744&ref=nipponstays.com) sits inside the loop of Nozawa's 13 public baths. The condition that flips the answer is the hill itself: Nozawa's lanes climb from the lower village up to both gondola bases, and dragging a wheeled suitcase up a snow-packed slope on arrival day is a different trip than being dropped at the door by taxi or hotel shuttle.

## The village is built on a hill — that is the whole decision

Nozawa Onsen is not laid out on a grid. The village rises from its lower approach road, past Oyu — the hot spring at its centre — toward the two lifts that bracket it: the Nagasaka Gondola to the south, the Hikage Gondola to the north. A moving walkway locally called the Yu Road carries pedestrians up the steepest stretch toward Hikage; everywhere else, you walk the slope on foot, and from late December through February that slope is packed snow, not pavement. Where you sleep decides whether your first and last twenty minutes of every ski day are a level stroll or a climb with boots and boards.

## Four ways to split the village

Every hotel and ryokan here falls into one of four rough bands, running from the Nagasaka base up through the village core to the Hikage base, with a fourth group near the lower bus terminal that relies on the free shuttle rather than a walk. For readers still weighing Nozawa against other options, our overview of [where to stay for skiing in Japan](https://www.nipponstays.com/ski-japan-where-to-stay/) and our guide to [where to stay in Hakuba](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-hakuba/) cover how it compares to Nagano's other bases.

| Area | Walk to Nagasaka Gondola | Walk to Oyu (village centre) | Slope access | Best for |

| Village core (Oyu) | 10+ min, or the free shuttle | On it | Reached by shuttle to Nagasaka or on foot up the Yu Road to Hikage | Onsen-hopping, restaurant choice, ryokan dinners |
| Hikage side | Different base — 15+ min or not walkable | 3- to 5-min walk down the Yu Road escalator | Hikage Gondola base, ski school, beginner terrain | Lessons, young beginners, quieter evenings |
| Lower village / bus terminal | Not walkable — free shuttle only | 5- to 10-min walk | Shuttle to Nagasaka; no direct gondola access on foot | Arriving by bus, budget stays |

## Nagasaka gondola side — first lift, fewer restaurants

The Nagasaka Gondola is Nozawa's main lift out of the village, an 8-minute ride up to the Uenotaira slope. Staying within a few minutes of its base means reaching the lift line without waiting for a shuttle: [Kawahiro](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-3898864/kawahiro/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740548&ref=nipponstays.com) is a 2-min walk from the station, [Altitude Nozawa](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-9384626/altitude-nozawa/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740163&ref=nipponstays.com) is a 5-min walk (350m) from the gondola's Contact Pair Lift base, with a shuttle stop at its own door, and [Schanze Nozawa](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-9911486/schanze-nozawa/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740772&ref=nipponstays.com) is built at the foot of the slope with ski-in/ski-out access. The trade-off is dinner: this side of the village has far fewer restaurants and bars than the core, so evenings mean walking down into the village or eating in. For the confirmed 2025-26 season, resort-wide lift hours ran 8:30 to 16:30, with the Nagasaka Gondola itself running 8:30 to 15:30 (last car down at 16:00); 2026-27 hours were not yet published. Lift ticket prices aren't covered here — see our [Japan ski lift ticket price roundup](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-ski-lift-ticket-prices-2026-27/), which also covers nearby Shiga Kogen.

## The village core — 13 sotoyu and everything else

Nozawa's 13 free public baths, or sotoyu, are what actually defines the village core, not the ski lifts. Residents maintain them on a rotation called yu-nakama; each has a donation box rather than a fixed fee, and most run roughly 6:00 to 22:00-23:00 through the winter season. Oyu, the largest and most central, and Ogama (麻釜), the source pool where the spring water visibly steams, sit near most core-area ryokan. For sotoyu etiquette beyond Nozawa itself, see our guide to [onsen after skiing in Japan](https://www.nipponstays.com/onsen-after-skiing-japan/), which covers washing before entering and tattoo policies. [Ryokan Sakaya](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-1584557/ryokan-sakaya/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740744&ref=nipponstays.com), eighteen generations into running as a ryokan from a former sake brewery, and [Sumiyoshiya](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-1677822/sumiyosiya-ryokan/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740800&ref=nipponstays.com), in front of the Ogama source, both sit inside this loop, as do [Kiriya Ryokan](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-5152314/kiriya-ryokan/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740583&ref=nipponstays.com) and [Tokiwaya](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-3053093/nozawa-onsen-tokiwaya-ryokan/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740870&ref=nipponstays.com), an inn roughly 380 years old. [Nozawa Grand Hotel](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-2254562/nozawa-grand-hotel/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740716&ref=nipponstays.com) has its own named stop on the village shuttle route directly outside, so arriving by bus with luggage does not involve the hill at all. What you give up here is proximity to first lift; what you get is everything Nozawa is known for after the lifts close.

## Hikage side and the shuttle

The Hikage Gondola connects the Hikage base to the Paradise slope on the resort's north side. This base also houses the main ski school, ticket offices, day care, and a kids' park, making Hikage the natural choice if lessons and young beginners matter more than vertical feet. [Naraya Ryokan](https://www.trip.com/hotels/nozawaonsen-hotel-detail-1497577/naraya-ryokan/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen&trip%5Fsub3=D19740646&ref=nipponstays.com), a nine-room inn with its own indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, sits about 200m — a 3-min walk — up the Yu Road escalator from the Hikage Gondola, with the main street 250m the other way.

The village's free shuttle bus, though, serves Nagasaka, not Hikage: in 2025-26 it ran 20 December to 29 March, every 15 to 25 minutes on weekdays, and every 10 to 15 minutes at weekends and over the New Year period (27 December to 4 January), between 8:00 and 17:00, linking the Central Terminal and a Meat Shop Washino stop to the Nagasaka Bus Terminal (2026-27 dates not yet published). Getting to Hikage from the core means walking the Yu Road, not catching a bus.

## Luggage, snow and the hill

This depends partly on how you're arriving — see our guide to [getting to Nozawa Onsen from Tokyo](https://www.nipponstays.com/how-to-get-to-nozawa-onsen/) for the Iiyama Station transfer most visitors use. Arrive by private transfer or taxi with a door-to-door drop-off, and the hill mostly disappears as a factor — pick the area, not the address. Arrive on foot from the bus terminal instead, and a Nagasaka-side lodge with a shuttle stop outside, or a level village-core ryokan near Oyu, both beat a room reached only by the Yu Road climb. Think twice about the Hikage side specifically with heavy luggage: its escalator handles people well but is not built for wheeled suitcases, so a case in tow means the last stretch is on foot regardless.

## The week you should not book this way

None of the area logic above holds if your dates land near mid-January. Nozawa's Fire Festival fills the village core for one specific night, rooms nearby disappear months ahead regardless of which side of the hill they're on, and the real questions become which properties have availability at all and how to get back to Iiyama Station afterward. We cover that separately in our guide to [where to stay for the Nozawa Fire Festival](https://www.nipponstays.com/nozawa-fire-festival-where-to-stay/), once the village confirms the 2027 date.

## What we checked

Of the 10 Nozawa Onsen properties named in this guide, 3 are a verified 2- to 5-min walk from a gondola base — Kawahiro and Schanze Nozawa at Nagasaka, Naraya Ryokan at Hikage — and Nozawa Onsen Basecamp sits, by its own listing, directly between the village core and the Nagasaka Gondola (checked September 2026). The gondola, lift, and shuttle hours cited above are confirmed 2025-26 season figures from Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort's official site (checked September 2026); the resort had not yet published 2026-27 hours or dates at the time of writing.

## FAQ: Where to stay in Nozawa Onsen

### Is it better to stay near the Nagasaka Gondola or in Nozawa's village core?

Stay near the Nagasaka Gondola if first lift matters more than dinner options — several lodges here are a 2- to 5-min walk from the base. Stay in the village core near Oyu if you want easy access to the 13 public baths and Nozawa's restaurants, and don't mind a 10-min walk or a shuttle ride to the lift each morning.

### How many public baths (sotoyu) does Nozawa Onsen have, and do you have to pay?

There are 13, maintained by village residents through a system called yu-nakama. None charge a fixed entry fee; each has a donation box by the door instead. Most run from around 6:00 to between 22:00 and 23:00 during the December-to-March season.

### Is there a free shuttle bus between the village and the ski lifts?

Yes, but only to the Nagasaka side. For the 2025-26 season it ran from 20 December 2025 to 29 March 2026, every 15 to 25 minutes on weekdays, and every 10 to 15 minutes at weekends and over the New Year period (27 December to 4 January), between 8:00 and 17:00, linking the Central Terminal and Meat Shop Washino stops to the Nagasaka Bus Terminal. It does not run to the Hikage base.

### Do I need a car to get around Nozawa Onsen?

No. The village is small enough to walk end to end in well under 20 minutes, and the free shuttle covers the Nagasaka route for anyone who doesn't want to walk uphill with gear. A car mainly helps at a lodge that specifies parking, since street parking in the village is limited.
