Where to stay in Fukui comes down to one split. If all you need is a bed near the trains and the day trips to Echizen-Ono, Eiheiji and Tojinbo, book a station-side hotel on JR Fukui Station's West Exit — the [Courtyard by Marriott Fukui](https://www.trip.com/hotels/fukui-hotel-detail-117472480/courtyard-fukui/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-fukui&trip%5Fsub3=D19807965&ref=nipponstays.com) for the view from the upper floors, or a plain room at [Toyoko Inn Fukui Ekimae](https://www.trip.com/hotels/fukui-hotel-detail-705151/toyoko-inn-fukui-ekimae/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-fukui&trip%5Fsub3=D19699164&ref=nipponstays.com) one minute closer to the platforms — and pay for your crab course separately, on your own schedule. If the crab course is the reason for the trip, book an Awara Onsen ryokan instead: both Grandia Housen and Seifuso sell a crab-kaiseki plan that folds dinner into the room rate, about 20 minutes from Fukui Station by train. Which is cheaper isn't obvious — a station room plus à la carte crab and a ryokan's all-in plan are two different bills, and either can come in under the other depending on how much crab you want.

## Station Side: Fukui Station's West Exit in Two Minutes or Less

Both of Fukui's most convenient station hotels sit on the same side of the same intersection, JR Fukui Station's West Exit, within two minutes of the ticket gates.

The [Courtyard by Marriott Fukui](https://www.trip.com/hotels/fukui-hotel-detail-117472480/courtyard-fukui/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=where-to-stay-in-fukui&trip%5Fsub3=D19807965&ref=nipponstays.com) opened in March 2024 as Marriott International's first hotel in the Hokuriku region, occupying FUKUMACHI BLOCK's East Tower from the 15th-floor restaurant up — a 27-story, roughly 120 m building that is currently Fukui Prefecture's tallest. From the West Exit, walk through the Kencho Iriguchi intersection to the entrance on the left, about two minutes. Rooms run 25 m² across the Superior and Deluxe categories, topping out at three on the Superior King; the 49 m² suite, the largest room, sleeps two (figures per a [booking platform's room chart](https://travel.yahoo.co.jp/00003189/room/?ref=nipponstays.com), since Marriott's own listing gives no sizes or occupancy; checked September 2026). Only the suite and corner deluxe have a bathtub. The hotel also runs all-day dining, a lounge bar, and a 24-hour fitness center. No single room here is set up for four, so a family of four needs two connecting rooms, which the hotel offers, rather than one larger one — confirmed against [Marriott's own room listing](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/kmqcy-courtyard-fukui/rooms/?ref=nipponstays.com) and current guest reviews (checked September 2026).

I stayed at Toyoko Inn Fukui Ekimae myself, on the night of 12 November 2021 — six days into that season's crab opening. I'd flown into Komatsu Airport and driven from there, and the point of the trip was to buy Echizen crab to bring home, not to eat it out, so the cheap room by the station was deliberate: the budget was going toward crab, not the bed. That was more than two years before the shinkansen extension reached Fukui in March 2024, so I won't describe the station area as I saw it then — it's since been rebuilt around the new line, and Toyoko Inn Fukui Ekimae itself, at 2-1-1 Ote, one minute from the West Exit with about 240 rooms, is the property today. Beyond the date, the airport, and the reason for the trip, I don't have specifics to add — no room, breakfast or parking details from that stay belong in this guide. The choice between this Toyoko Inn and the Courtyard a minute further on isn't really about location, since both sit on the same West Exit — it's about how much of the budget you want left over for crab.

## Awara Onsen: The Crab-Ryokan Alternative, About 20 Minutes Away

Awara Onsen is Fukui Prefecture's main hot-spring town, reachable from Fukui Station in roughly 20 minutes, where most ryokan price dinner into the room rate.

Awaraonsen Station has been a Hokuriku Shinkansen stop, on the third-sector Hapi-Line Fukui network, since the March 2024 Tsuruga extension. Local and rapid Hapi-Line Fukui trains between Fukui and Awaraonsen Station take about 17 to 21 minutes. Some ryokan run a free shuttle from the station, but it has to be booked ahead of arrival — [Seifuso](https://www.seifuso.com/access/?ref=nipponstays.com) states that requirement on its own access page.

[Grandia Housen's current crab plan](https://www.g-housen.co.jp/cuisine/kani/?ref=nipponstays.com) runs from 7 November 2026 to 31 March 2027, pausing for a New Year break from 29 December to 5 January, and covers crab boiled in the shell, crab sashimi and grilled crab; its "Ko-shi-fuki-ki-tei" comfort suite is rated for one to six guests. Seifuso's course, Echizen Kani-zukushi Kaiseki, centers on one whole tagged crab plus seven more dishes over about 150 minutes; its Ro-an and Honjin categories are rated for four. Crab-plan dates, courses and pricing reset every season, so confirm the current plan on the ryokan's site before booking — at Grandia Housen, seiko-gani (female crab) runs only through 28 December, inside the prefecture-wide cutoff of 31 December.

## Why the Total Can Flip: The Crab Course Is a Separate Bill at a Station Hotel

At a station-side hotel, the room and the crab dinner are two separate transactions — a crab restaurant bills you on its own, by course or à la carte, whoever is sleeping where.

At an Awara ryokan the structure runs the other way: the nightly rate bundles the crab course, and usually breakfast, into one line item — the meals-included pattern covered generally in [ryokan with meals vs. room-only](https://www.nipponstays.com/ryokan-with-meals-vs-room-only/). That's why totals can invert. A cheap station room plus a modest crab meal can total less than a ryokan's crab-inclusive plan, since it's built around a substantial multi-course dinner regardless of how much crab you actually wanted. Flip it around and an à la carte crab-kaiseki course at a specialty restaurant can cost more than the same meal folded into a ryokan's rate, since the ryokan spreads a fixed dinner cost across every guest on the plan.

That's the logic behind my own Toyoko Inn stay above: the trip was about buying crab, so the room was the one place to economize. Price both paths for your actual dates before deciding — a station room plus a specialty crab restaurant, versus a ryokan's crab plan — since season and the day's catch move both figures independently. If a smaller or no crab dinner is fine, staying at the station and paying only for food you want is close to always the lighter structure. Of the four options above, the two Awara ryokan bundle the crab course into the room rate; the two station hotels don't — the Courtyard's own 15th-floor restaurant, [FUKUI](https://restaurant.ikyu.com/128441?ref=nipponstays.com), does serve Echizen crab each winter, but as its own bill, same as ordering it anywhere else near the station (checked September 2026).

## Which Town Pulls Your Choice: Echizen-Ono, Eiheiji or Tojinbo

Three side trips end up deciding which side of Fukui you should sleep on: Echizen-Ono and Eiheiji both favor the Fukui Station side, and Tojinbo favors Awara.

[Eiheiji](https://www.fuku-e.com/en/attractions/detail%5F1089.html?ref=nipponstays.com), the 13th-century Soto Zen head temple, has an hourly direct bus from Fukui Station's East Exit — the opposite exit from both station hotels above — taking about 30 minutes; missing it, the Echizen Railway to Eiheiji-guchi plus a short local bus is the backup. Echizen-Ono, the castle town I walked through one November morning in 2020 — past Yuirakuza, the shop inside the Heisei Onoya complex (run by the Echizen-Ono Tourism Bureau since April 2024), the clock tower square, and Ono Castle visible above the rooftops — is about 50 minutes away on the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line, which runs around 8 trains a day from Fukui Station, so check the [current timetable](https://www.city.ono.fukui.jp/kurashi/douro-kotsu/tetsudou/jikokuhyoR40312.html?ref=nipponstays.com) before a same-day round trip. Tojinbo's basalt cliffs are about 40 minutes by bus from Awaraonsen Station; per [Keifuku Bus's own route guidance](https://bus.keifuku.co.jp/rosen-tourist-spot/%E6%9D%B1%E5%B0%8B%E5%9D%8A/?ref=nipponstays.com), there's no direct bus from Fukui Station at all — you'd train to Awaraonsen first, then take the same bus, closer to an hour and a half door to door — the one pull that favors Awara over the station side.

| Day trip | Best base | Time from that base | Runner-up base |
| ----------- | ------------------------- | --------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Eiheiji | Fukui Station (East Exit) | About 30 min, direct bus | Awara — longer, needs a transfer |
| Echizen-Ono | Fukui Station | About 50 min, JR Etsumi-Hoku Line | Not practical from Awara without backtracking through Fukui |
| Tojinbo | Awara Onsen | About 40 min, bus | Fukui Station — about 1h30m, no direct bus (train to Awaraonsen, then bus) |

If your days are shaped mostly around Eiheiji and Echizen-Ono, sleep at the station. If Tojinbo is the priority and crab is the point of the evening, Awara does double duty. Travelers routing this trip through [the shinkansen connection from Tokyo](https://www.nipponstays.com/how-to-get-to-fukui-from-tokyo/) or the Echizen crab season in our [Echizen crab guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/echizen-crab-where-to-eat-and-stay/) tend to land on one side or the other once they've picked their day trips.

## Trip Essentials for Fukui

Things worth booking before you land, all in English:

- **eSIM** — [Airalo's Japan eSIM](https://airalo.tpm.lv/2TWpibQS?ref=nipponstays.com): install it at home and data works as soon as you switch off airplane mode at Komatsu Airport.
- **Tickets and day trips** — [Klook](https://klook.tpm.lv/8wzTeLyt?ref=nipponstays.com) covers the Fukui Dinosaur Museum and day trips to Eiheiji and Tojinbo; booking ahead skips the ticket-window line.

## FAQ: Where to Stay in Fukui

### Is it better to stay at Fukui Station or in Awara Onsen for Echizen crab?

It depends on whether you want the crab course built into your room or bought separately. Station hotels leave the crab dinner as an à la carte choice; Awara ryokan bundle it into the nightly rate, and either path can cost more or less than the other, depending on how much crab you want.

### How far is Awara Onsen from Fukui Station?

About 17 to 21 minutes on local Hapi-Line Fukui trains, or about 8 minutes on a Tsurugi shinkansen if the timing lines up — both have stopped at Awaraonsen Station since the March 2024 Tsuruga extension. Some ryokan, including Seifuso, run a free shuttle from the station if you book it ahead of arrival.

### Can a family of four stay in one room at these hotels?

Not at the Courtyard by Marriott Fukui — its largest room that sleeps more than two, a 25 m² Superior King, tops out at three, so a family of four needs two connecting rooms. Awara ryokan such as Grandia Housen and Seifuso have room categories rated for four or more (Grandia Housen's suite up to six), a more direct fit for that size.

### Is Eiheiji or Tojinbo easier to combine with a Fukui Station stay?

Eiheiji is the easier match: a direct bus from Fukui Station's East Exit takes about 30 minutes. Tojinbo favors Awara instead — about 40 minutes by bus, versus no direct bus at all from Fukui Station (train to Awaraonsen, then the same bus, closer to an hour and a half total).
