Hokkaido's ski season really hides two separate questions inside one: when do Hokkaido ski resorts open, and when is there actually enough mountain open to justify the flight? For 2026-27, Niseko's four linked areas — Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri — are posted to open 28 November 2026 (subject to change), and their gondola and upper lifts have historically followed within days rather than weeks. Rusutsu and Kiroro now post the same 28 November date but reward patience: Rusutsu's summit-access gondolas typically don't join in until close to 20 December in a normal season, and at Kiroro late November is consistently the thinnest stretch of the whole winter. Locked into the first ten days of December? Build the trip around Niseko. Can wait until January? The whole list opens up.

## Opening day and "the whole mountain is open" are two different dates

Every Hokkaido resort publishes one headline date for its season, and that date answers only one question: can you ride a lift there at all. It says nothing about how much of the mountain is skiable, or which of the marquee lifts — the summit gondola, the backside quad — are actually turning.

This isn't hypothetical. In the 2025-26 season, the [Niseko Resort Tourism Association posted a public notice](https://www.niseko-ta.jp/news/article/niseko-area-ski-area-25-26/?ref=nipponstays.com) two days before the widely advertised 29 November opening, warning that Niseko Annupuri and Niseko HANAZONO were pushing their openings back for lack of snow. Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village weren't flagged in the same notice. All four areas did open that season — the lesson is that even a resort's own tourism board can promise a date on a calendar but not the snow underneath it.

The table below separates the two questions for eleven Hokkaido ski areas: when the season is scheduled to open, and, where it's known, how much later the full mountain typically follows.

| Resort | 2025-26 actual opening | 2026-27 opening (posted by the resort) | Full mountain / top lifts | Season ends 2026-27 |

## Early December — the resorts that actually deliver

Need to be on snow in the first ten days of December? Niseko's four linked areas are the safest bet on this list. All four have a published 2026-27 opening of 28 November, and in 2025-26 the gondola and upper terminals at Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village ran without the delay that hit their two neighbours. That said, the same season is proof that "safest" isn't "guaranteed": two of the four areas still pushed back for lack of snow, so treat 28 November as a strong average, not a promise.

Sapporo Teine and Sapporo Kokusai post the two earliest calendar dates of the group — 21 and 20 November 2026 — but they're also the two closest to the city among the resorts here, and an early calendar date isn't the same claim as deep cover. If a December trip depends on one of these two, check the resort's own daily lift-status page the week before you fly, not the season-opening announcement.

Furano, Rusutsu and Kiroro all opened alongside Niseko in 2025-26 (29 November), and all three now list the same 28 November 2026 date as planned. Tomamu and Sahoro are built around 1 December rather than late November; neither has ever marketed itself as an early-season resort, so that's business as usual for them, not a delay.

## Late November is a gamble, and here is the shape of it

At Kiroro, late November is consistently the thinnest week of the entire winter. I ski there roughly 38 days a season and treat the last week of November as a coin flip on the lower runs and nothing else — the most reliable stretch doesn't arrive until late January, once the base has actually built up. Kiroro's own 2026-27 lift-ticket calendar puts high season at 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 (planned), with 28 November–11 December sold at early-season rates. Nothing here generalises to the other ten resorts; it's specific to Kiroro's own terrain, and each resort's snow pattern is its own.

Rusutsu is a different kind of late-opener, because it's a genuinely large, three-peak resort rather than a single face. In a typical season its west-side quad is first to spin, in late November, with the east and Isola-area quads following roughly a week later. The lifts that reach the true summit — the west gondola and the Isola gondola — are usually the last to join in, historically not until around 20 December (track the live picture on [Rusutsu's own lift-status page](https://rusutsu.com/lift-and-trail-status/?ref=nipponstays.com)). A late-November visit there can mean a genuinely good day on the lower mountain and zero access to the terrain the resort is famous for.

None of this makes late November a mistake — it means the date on a resort's homepage tells you when you can buy a lift ticket, not how much of the mountain that ticket will reach.

## When the season ends

Closing dates spread out further than opening dates do. Grand Hirafu, Annupuri and Kiroro all carry a 2026-27 closing date of 5 May 2027 — into Japan's Golden Week — while Niseko Village closes 4 April and HANAZONO 11 April, three to four weeks earlier despite the shared lift ticket. Tomamu's own season page lists 5 April 2027\. Kiroro shows how loosely those dates hold: it planned 6 May in 2025-26 and closed 3 May when warm weather made the runs unsafe. The rest haven't published a 2026-27 close yet; going by 2025-26, Furano ran into early May (6 May), while Rusutsu and Sahoro wrapped up in late March and early April.

Elevation, not marketing, drives most of this spread: terrain reaching higher above sea level keeps skiable snow long after town-level cover has turned to slush, which is also why Grand Hirafu, Annupuri and Kiroro all plan to run to 5 May 2027.

## What is still provisional in October

By the time this page publishes, some of the gaps below should have closed. As of this check, Sahoro was the only area whose opening was still a month rather than a day. Furano, Rusutsu and Sapporo Teine had an opening date but not a closing one, while the four Niseko areas, Tomamu, Kiroro and Sapporo Kokusai had both ends of the 2026-27 season posted. None of that is unusual this far out — most Hokkaido resorts finalise a full calendar in October or November once autumn temperatures give them something to commit to. Book flights or non-refundable lodging around an unconfirmed resort loosely, and wait for the resort's own season page.

Counted plainly: of the 11 areas compared here, 10 have a 2026-27 opening date posted on the resort's own site — all of them flagged as planned or subject to change — while 7 have posted a closing date (the four Niseko areas, Tomamu, Kiroro and Sapporo Kokusai) (checked September 2026).

## Where to stay once you have your dates

This page only answers when the lifts turn — not where to base yourself, and not whether December or February suits your trip. For that, see our [December versus February winter trip comparison](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-december-vs-february-winter-trip/) and the case for [timing a first Japan ski trip to February or March](https://www.nipponstays.com/first-ski-trip-japan-february-or-march/). For budgeting once your dates are set, we've priced the [2026-27 lift tickets across eight Japanese resorts](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-ski-lift-ticket-prices-2026-27/), Hokkaido included.

For where to sleep, our area guides go deeper than this page can: [where to stay in Niseko](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-niseko/) covers Hirafu, Village, Annupuri and HANAZONO as separate bases, [where to stay in Furano](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-furano/) splits Kitanomine from the town centre and the Prince Hotel side, and [Japan ski hotels that actually sleep four](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-ski-hotels-that-sleep-four/) is the place to start travelling as a family. We also have a full [Kiroro season guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/kiroro-snow-season-when-to-go/) covering this same opening-day-versus-full-mountain question in more depth for that one resort.

If early December is your window, Niseko is the safer bet on this list — [Ki Niseko](https://www.trip.com/hotels/kutchan-hotel-detail-2199169/ki-niseko/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=when-do-hokkaido-ski-resorts-open&trip%5Fsub3=D19740569&ref=nipponstays.com) sits at the King Gondola base in Hirafu, so a partial opening still means walking to whatever is spinning rather than driving to it.

## FAQ: Hokkaido ski season dates

### When does the 2026-27 Hokkaido ski season actually start?

It depends on the resort. Sapporo Kokusai (20 November 2026, subject to change) and Sapporo Teine (21 November 2026, subject to change) post the earliest dates on this list. Niseko's four linked areas, Furano, Rusutsu and Kiroro all post 28 November 2026, again as a planned date. Tomamu opens 1 December 2026, and Sahoro has confirmed only that the season starts sometime in December 2026, without a specific day yet.

### Is Niseko really skiable by early December, or is that only the base area?

Both patterns happened in the same 2025-26 season, at neighbouring mountains sharing one lift ticket: Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village ran their upper lifts close to the opening date, while the tourism association publicly delayed Annupuri and HANAZONO for low snow. That's the clearest evidence that "Niseko is open" and "all of Niseko is open" aren't the same claim, even inside one resort complex.

### When do the Niseko areas close for the 2026-27 season?

Grand Hirafu and Annupuri both carry a closing date of 5 May 2027 (subject to change), reaching into Golden Week. Niseko Village closes 4 April 2027 and HANAZONO closes 11 April 2027 — three to four weeks earlier than the other two, despite sharing the same lift ticket and the same 28 November opening.

### Is it worth skiing Hokkaido in late November?

At Kiroro specifically, late November is the thinnest stretch of the season, and the most reliable conditions don't arrive until late January. At Rusutsu, the lifts reaching the true summit typically don't join in until around 20 December, so a late-November visit there usually means lower-mountain skiing only. Neither pattern is a reason to avoid Hokkaido that early — it's a reason to match the resort and the expectations to the calendar you're actually flying on.
