- Description: Three ANA sectors priced in August 2026: 6,000-7,000 United miles plus $2.90-$5.20. Plus the two-seat limit and the codeshare flights you cannot book.

Using United miles for ANA domestic flights is the most straightforward award booking available inside Japan. In August 2026 we priced three ANA-operated sectors through MileagePlus and paid **6,000 miles plus $5.10** for Osaka Itami–Tokyo Haneda, **6,000 miles plus $2.90** for Itami–Fukuoka, and **7,000 miles plus $5.20** for Sapporo New Chitose–Haneda. Everything was bookable online, cancellation is free, and seats appear on the day of departure. The catch is not the price — it is that the seats come in pairs at most.

One correction worth stating up front: published English guides still quote 5,500 miles for these routes. That was not what our searches returned. Every ANA economy award we priced in August 2026 came out at 6,000 or 7,000, and the difference between the two is distance rather than demand.

## What it costs

These are real search results for real flight numbers, in the lowest economy award bucket United offers, which its booking screen labels Saver Award and Economy (X).

United's own metal to Japan prices separately from this. From 11 December 2026 the airline flies San Francisco to New Chitose nonstop, where the same seat runs 55,000 miles on some days and 150,000 on others — [the pattern behind that](https://www.nipponstays.com/united-award-seats-san-francisco-sapporo/) turns out to follow the operating days.

| Route | Flight | Aircraft | Miles | Tax |
| ---------------------------------- | ------ | -------- | ----- | ----- |
| Osaka Itami – Tokyo Haneda | NH986 | A321 | 6,000 | $5.10 |
| Osaka Itami – Fukuoka | NH421 | A321 | 6,000 | $2.90 |
| Sapporo New Chitose – Tokyo Haneda | NH50 | 787-8 | 7,000 | $5.20 |

Across the three ANA sectors we priced in August 2026, the cash component averaged $4.40 and never exceeded $5.20 — low enough that the miles, not the taxes, are the whole cost of the ticket (checked August 2026).

The two short sectors priced identically at 6,000\. New Chitose–Haneda is roughly twice the distance and cost 1,000 miles more. That consistency is useful: you can estimate an unfamiliar route from its length instead of searching blind. Rates also rise inside 21 days of departure, so a balance that covers a flight two months out may not cover the same flight next week.

## The two-seat ceiling

This is the reason to read this section before you plan a family trip around award seats.

**In our searches, we have not seen more than two seats released on a single ANA flight.** Across many bookings over several years, availability has topped out at a pair. We are describing what our searches return, not a published ANA policy — the airline does not document how it allocates partner award inventory, and this could change.

Two people travelling together are usually fine. A family of three or four is not: at least one of you will need another way onto the aircraft. Your options:

- **Split across flights.** Two of you take the morning departure, the rest the next one. On dense routes like Haneda–Itami this costs an hour, not a day.
- **Mix miles and cash.** Book the pair with miles and buy the rest. On a short sector the cash fare is often modest enough that this is the least painful answer.
- **Use two programmes.** If one traveller has United miles and another has oneworld miles, book ANA and JAL separately on similar timings rather than fighting for two seats on one flight.
- **Check the JAL side.** Award inventory is released independently, so a flight that is closed on ANA may have seats on JAL. The [oneworld guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/oneworld-miles-for-jal-domestic-flights/) covers that side.

Solaseed Air and AIR DO at Haneda. Both sell seats under ANA flight numbers; neither is an ANA aircraft.

## The codeshare trap: ANA flight numbers that are not ANA aircraft

A schedule search for a Japanese domestic route will show plenty of flights with NH numbers that United cannot sell you as an award. Several independent carriers codeshare with ANA, so the flight carries an ANA number but is operated by another airline:

- **AIR DO** — Hokkaido routes, including Haneda to Sapporo, Hakodate and Asahikawa
- **Solaseed Air** — Kyushu routes out of Miyazaki and Kumamoto
- **Oriental Air Bridge (ORC)** — Nagasaki and the islands off western Kyushu
- **Star Flyer** — Kitakyushu and Fukuoka routes

Partner award bookings generally reach the airline that actually operates the flight, not every flight number the airline sells. If a departure you expected does not appear in the United search while the same route shows other times, check who operates it before concluding the flight is full. ANA Wings, which is ANA's own subsidiary rather than a codeshare partner, is a different case and worth searching on its own merits.

The practical habit: search on United first and treat what appears as the real menu, rather than picking a flight from a timetable and then trying to find it in the award engine.

## What the booking screen tells you

Two details on the United confirmation screen are worth knowing before you book.

**The flight earns you nothing.** The screen shows "0 PQF, 0 PQP" for these sectors, meaning the flight contributes no Premier qualifying flights or points towards MileagePlus status. That is normal for award tickets, but if you are working towards status, this flight will not help.

**There is no meal.** ANA domestic economy on these routes is a drink service at most, and United's screen states plainly that meals are not offered. On a 90-minute sector that is a non-issue; on an early departure it means eating before you board.

## Same-day booking and cancellation

The two features that make this programme genuinely useful are ones you only appreciate when something goes wrong.

Award seats can be booked on the day of travel, online, without calling anyone. We have used this to recover from a cancelled flight on another airline and get home the same evening — the mechanics of that are in the [flight cancellation guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-flight-cancellations-award-ticket-backup/).

Cancellation is free, and this is where the foreign programmes beat the Japanese ones outright.

| Programme | Airline booked | Cancelling an award ticket |
| ------------------ | -------------- | ------------------------------- |
| United MileagePlus | ANA | Free; miles returned |
| Atmos Rewards | JAL | Free; fares shown as refundable |
| ANA Mileage Club | ANA | Fee applies (¥3,000 scale) |
| JAL Mileage Bank | JAL | Fee applies (¥1,000 scale) |

The Japanese programmes charge to put miles back; the American ones do not. For a traveller whose plans might move, that difference is worth more than the mileage rate.

If you are flying into New Chitose, our [Sapporo accommodation guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-sapporo/) covers the city, and [New Chitose airport hotels](https://www.nipponstays.com/new-chitose-airport-hotels-early-flights/) is built around early departures. ## FAQ: United miles on ANA domestic flights

### How many United miles do I need for an ANA domestic flight?

In our August 2026 searches, short sectors such as Osaka Itami–Tokyo Haneda and Itami–Fukuoka cost 6,000 miles, and the longer Sapporo New Chitose–Haneda cost 7,000\. Taxes ran $2.90 to $5.20\. Rates increase within 21 days of departure, so book earlier if your balance is tight.

### How many people can book the same ANA flight with United miles?

Two, in our experience. We have not seen more than two award seats released on a single ANA flight, so a couple is usually fine while a family of three or four is not. This is what our searches return rather than a documented ANA policy, and it may change. For larger groups, split across departures, mix miles with cash tickets, or check JAL availability through a oneworld programme.

### Why can't I find an ANA flight that exists in the timetable?

It may be a codeshare. AIR DO, Solaseed Air, Oriental Air Bridge and Star Flyer all sell flights under ANA numbers while operating the aircraft themselves, and partner award bookings generally do not extend to them. Check the operating carrier before assuming the flight is sold out.

### Does an ANA award ticket booked with United miles earn status?

No. The booking screen shows 0 PQF and 0 PQP, so the flight earns nothing towards MileagePlus qualification. Award tickets do not count towards status in this programme.
