# Rusutsu to Tomamu Transfer: Route and Times (2026-27)

There is no direct bus or train for a Rusutsu to Tomamu transfer. The realistic route is a free shuttle bus from Rusutsu into Sapporo (about 2 hours), followed by a JR limited express to Tomamu Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes), with a connection wait at Sapporo Station in between — a winter door-to-door time of roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on the buffer built into the connection. The one-way fare is approximately ¥5,880 (about $39 USD) for the rail leg, since the Sapporo–Rusutsu shuttle itself is free but requires reservation. ## Is there a direct service between Rusutsu and Tomamu?

## The bus-plus-train route, leg by leg

The first leg is the Rusutsu-Go shuttle bus, a free service run by Rusutsu Resort between Rusutsu and Sapporo Station's south exit (pickup point: Kamori Building, a short walk from the station), taking approximately 2 hours. Online reservation is required, and the resort's own booking rule is that reservations close at 15:00 on the day before travel — this is not a same-day walk-up service, so it needs to be arranged before setting out. The second leg is the JR Limited Express Tokachi, which runs from Sapporo to Obihiro via Shin-Sapporo, Minami-Chitose, Oiwake, Shin-Yubari, Shimukappu, and Tomamu, taking roughly 1 hour 35 to 45 minutes to reach Tomamu Station. All seats on the Tokachi are reserved, and the standard reserved-seat fare from Sapporo to Tomamu is about ¥5,880 one-way; a Green Car (first-class) seat runs about ¥8,150\. Eki-net is worth a look before you pay the counter price, with one thing to understand about it: it is **JR East's** booking site, but JR Hokkaido sells through it, so you can buy Hokkaido limited-express tickets there and collect them from ticket machines or staffed windows at JR Hokkaido stations. Its discounted "Toku-da-ne" fares on the Ozora and Tokachi are set between Sapporo, Shin-Sapporo or Minami-Chitose and Obihiro or Kushiro — Tomamu sits on that line but is not one of the named endpoints, so do not count on the discount for a Sapporo–Tomamu ticket specifically. ⚠️ JR East is also withdrawing the "Tokkyu Toku-da-ne 1" and "Toku-da-ne 14" products through autumn 2026, with the last of them off sale by 31 October 2026 and a chargeable-seat discount ("Tokuwari") replacing them from 1 November; check what is actually on sale for your dates rather than assuming last season's product still exists (JR East announcement, checked August 2026). *Verify current Tokachi departure times and any winter 2026-27 timetable revisions directly with JR Hokkaido before finalizing a connection window, since limited express schedules on this line are adjusted seasonally.*

## Making the connection work

The practical risk on this route is missing the Tokachi at Sapporo Station after the Rusutsu-Go shuttle arrives, since the shuttle's 2-hour running time is an average and can run longer in heavy snow on the mountain-pass sections near Rusutsu. Our recommendation, not an operator rule, is to build in at least a 60 to 90-minute buffer at Sapporo Station before the scheduled Tokachi departure, since the Tokachi runs only a handful of times per day and a missed departure typically means a multi-hour wait for the next one rather than a short delay. If the shuttle is delayed and the buffer is not enough, the fallback is buying a walk-up Tokachi ticket for a later departure at Sapporo Station rather than waiting at a connection point with no ticket in hand.

## Should this be a travel day or an overnight?

Given the shuttle time, the connection buffer, and the train leg, this route consumes the better part of a day even when every connection runs on time, and a Sapporo overnight often preserves more actual ski time than a same-day push does. Splitting the trip means a shorter, less pressured Rusutsu-to-Sapporo leg one day and a fresh Sapporo-to-Tomamu leg the next, with no missed-connection risk carried across two resorts on the same day. ## Private transfer and driving

Private vehicle transfers between Rusutsu and Tomamu are offered by several Hokkaido transfer operators, with published rates from roughly ¥23,000 to ¥53,000 one-way for a small taxi (up to 2 guests) and ¥37,000 to ¥78,000 for a jumbo taxi (up to 6 guests), figures that vary by operator and should be requested directly rather than assumed fixed. Driving the corridor yourself covers a similar distance to the private-transfer route, largely via the Doou Expressway through the Chitose area; treat any map app's estimate as a summer baseline only; on snow-covered sections, particularly around the Chitose interchange stretch, the same drive can run well past its clear-weather estimate.
