# Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada Without a Car: Buses, Rail Pass and the Rain Plan

You can reach **Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada without a car**, and if you already hold a JAPAN RAIL PASS or a JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area), the bus ride is covered — JR Bus Tohoku's Aomori local routes accept both, and the stop sign at the Oirase Keiryukan says so in English. Paying cash instead, Aomori Station to Lake Towada is ¥3,480 one way (JR Bus Tohoku, checked August 2026). The limit is not money, it is frequency: the board at that stop listed eight departures for the entire day when we read it on 11 August 2026, the last at 16:42, and the route runs only from spring to mid-November. In winter, or if you need to be back in Aomori at a fixed hour, plan a taxi rather than assume a bus will be waiting.

## The sign that changes the plan: your rail pass works on the bus

The JAPAN RAIL PASS and the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) are both valid on JR Bus Tohoku's Aomori-area local buses, which is the single fact that makes a car-free trip to the gorge straightforward. We photographed the notice at the Oirase Keiryukan stop on 11 August 2026: the sign is in four languages and the English line names both passes. JR Bus Tohoku's route page names the exclusions — the JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass and the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass are not accepted (checked August 2026).

Paying cash, one-way fares are ¥3,480 from Aomori Station to Lake Towada (roughly 2.5 hours) and ¥3,050 from Hachinohe Station West Exit (about 135 minutes), from JR Bus Tohoku's route page, checked August 2026\. The same page states that boarding the Hachinohe service at the West Exit requires a booking — ¥300 per seat, paid online in advance, with no seat numbers, and passengers without one may be put on a folding seat. A return trip runs close to ¥7,000 per person, so a pass you already hold changes the shape of the day.

## Which bus stop, which bus at Shin-Aomori

Shin-Aomori Station numbers its bus bays, and the concourse board is printed in four languages, so you can check them yourself on arrival. The bay you want for the gorge is East Exit bay 1\. Rental cars are at the West Exit; there are taxi ranks at the East and South exits.

East Exit bays 2 and 4 hold seasonal tourist route buses, and South Exit bay 2 serves Goshogawara, Kuroishi and Namioka. The [Towada Art Center](https://www.nipponstays.com/towada-art-center-guide/) is itself a transport hub: buses leave it for Hachinohe, Shichinohe-Towada, Misawa, Aomori and Shin-Aomori stations and the Oirase and Lake Towada road, so it slots into a car-free day rather than forcing a detour.

## Eight buses a day: how to build the day around them

Frequency, not distance, is what breaks a car-free Oirase itinerary. Of the eight departures listed on the board at the Oirase Keiryukan stop on 11 August 2026 — 9:42, 10:42, 12:42, 13:32, 14:27, 15:42, 16:12 and 16:42, across every destination that stop serves — six leave before 16:00 and only two after it, and the longest hole in the day is the two hours between 10:42 and 12:42 (from the 1 April 2026 revision posted at the stop).

The season matters as much as the clock. JR Bus Tohoku's 2026 schedule starts the Mizuumi-go on 1 April and the Hachinohe-side Oirase-go on 11 April, running to mid-November. Between late November and March the Aomori side keeps only the Hakkoda and Sukayu Onsen service plus a small number of reservation-only runs, so a winter visit means a booked service rather than a walk-up bus (checked August 2026). Read the operator's current timetable before you commit.

Pick your return bus first and work backwards. Walk one section of the gorge, not all of it, and be back at your stop fifteen minutes early: the next one may be two hours later.

## When the bus is not enough: taxis, and the app that stops working

A taxi is a legitimate part of a car-free plan, not an admission of defeat. At Hachinohe we watched overseas visitors step off a premium Shinkansen car and go straight to the taxi rank; on a route with eight buses a day, that is a rational trade.

The ride-hailing app you used in Tokyo does not behave the same way here. A notice we read on site on 11 August 2026 said the GO taxi app covers the Towada district only within one operator's business hours — Sanbongi Taxi, 7:00 to roughly 02:00 the following morning on Fridays and Saturdays, and 7:00 to about 01:00 otherwise. Outside those hours the app has nothing to dispatch. The same signage advised booking your return taxi in advance: a free cab typically arrives in 5–10 minutes, but the area gets tight in peak season.

## How to walk the gorge: downstream to upstream, always

The on-site walking sign at the Oirase Keiryukan gives one instruction that almost no English article repeats: always walk from downstream to upstream. Going against the current puts the waterfalls and rapids in front of you. The same sign notes the gradient is only about 14 m per kilometre, so "upstream" does not mean a climb — this is a flat riverside path, not a hike.

The gorge runs 14 km from Nenokuchi on Lake Towada down to Yakeyama, and the sign divides it into an upper 5.0 km of continuous waterfalls and big katsura trees, a middle 5.5 km beside the road past most named viewpoints, and a lower 3.5 km of wider, quieter forest. The local eco-tourism association puts the full Yakeyama-to-Nenokuchi walk at about five hours and the Ishigedo-to-Nenokuchi highlight section at roughly 9 km and about 2.5 hours (checked August 2026). The Ishigedo section is the one that fits between two buses.

## If it rains, and it does

Oirase has no indoor substitute inside the gorge, which makes weather the biggest single risk to a fixed-date plan. We lost 11 August 2026 to rain and abandoned the walk. The forest reads well wet and road-side sections are walkable with an umbrella; it is the unsheltered stretches and the bus gaps that make a wet full-length walk a poor idea.

The Oirase Keiryukan at the Yakeyama end absorbs a rained-out afternoon. It houses the rental bicycle counter (electric-assist from ¥3,000 and city cycles from ¥1,000 for four hours, ¥300 per extra 30 minutes, 9:00–16:30, early April to early November, with pick-up and drop-off at the Keiryukan, Ishigedo or the Nenokuchi bus stop; no same-day web reservations, checked August 2026). It also holds a nature exhibition, a café and shop, and the OIRASE BEER brewery and restaurant.
