Kanazawa vs Toyama as a Hokuriku base is not a close contest for a first visit — Kanazawa wins on sights and on hotel choice, from ¥12,300 for two at ANA Crowne Plaza Kanazawa. ## Kanazawa is the sightseeing city

Kanazawa carries the things people come to Hokuriku for: Kenrokuen, one of Japan's three great gardens; the Higashi Chaya district of preserved teahouse streets; the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art; Omicho market. They are close enough together to cover on foot and by bus over two days.

The hotel market follows. There is real depth here across price bands, which matters when you are booking late or travelling in cherry blossom season. ## Toyama is the access city

Toyama's case is not sightseeing. It is that the things you reach from Toyama are the things you cannot reach from anywhere else.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route — the crossing through the Northern Japan Alps, with the snow corridor in spring — starts on the Toyama side. The Kurobe Gorge Railway runs from Unazuki. If either is the reason you came to Hokuriku, staying in Toyama removes a 20-minute train each way at the start and end of a long day, and those days start early.

## The 20-minute fact that resolves most of this

Kanazawa and Toyama are 20 minutes apart on the fastest Kagayaki services, or 23 on the Hakutaka and Tsurugi that stop at Shin-Takaoka — and those run more often, so 23 is the number you will actually travel. That is short enough that basing in one and day-tripping to the other is entirely practical, which removes the pressure from this decision.

The practical consequence: choose Kanazawa by default, and switch to Toyama only if your mountain day starts early enough that 40 minutes of round-trip train matters. For the Alpine Route it usually does — the crossing is long and the last connections are unforgiving.

## Check the season before you book Toyama

The case for Toyama rests on mountain access, and mountain access is seasonal. Both the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the Kurobe Gorge Railway close for winter and reopen in spring, with the exact dates announced each year and shifting with snow conditions. The snow corridor that appears in every photograph of the route is a spring feature, not a winter one.

So the decision changes by month. In late spring, summer and autumn, Toyama has a genuine argument. In deep winter, that argument disappears entirely and Kanazawa becomes the obvious base by default — its sights run year-round and it is arguably at its best under snow.

Confirm the current operating dates with the operators before you book a Toyama night for mountain access. A hotel booked around a route that has not opened yet is the most avoidable mistake in this comparison.

- **First visit to Hokuriku.** Kanazawa. The sights are there and so is the hotel choice.
- **Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.** Toyama, at least for that night. The route starts on this side and begins early.

- **Shinkansen stopover between Tokyo and points west.** Either, but Kanazawa gives you more to do with a spare afternoon.
