Japan winter illuminations 2026 2027 dates split into two groups right now: a handful of venues — Nabana no Sato, Kobe Luminarie, Shirakawa-go, and the Otaru–Sapporo pair — have already confirmed their exact nights, while most of the rest are still showing last season's calendar because they typically announce in October or November. If you want to build a full trip around one light-up rather than just pass through it, the two worth a stay are Nabana no Sato near Nagoya and Ashikaga Flower Fantasy in Tochigi — each has its own base-town guide below. Staying centrally in Tokyo instead, to catch Midtown, Marunouchi, and Roppongi on the same trip? [Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo](https://www.trip.com/hotels/tokyo-hotel-detail-994639/keio-plaza-hotel-tokyo/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=japan-winter-illuminations-2026-27&trip%5Fsub3=D19118080&ref=nipponstays.com) sits a 1-min walk from Exit B1 of Tocho-mae Station (Toei Oedo Line) in Shinjuku's skyscraper district, with all three central light-ups a short train ride away.

## The season, in three windows

Japan's winter light-up season runs roughly from late October to late February, and it splits into three distinct windows rather than one continuous stretch. Late October through November is the quiet window — Nabana no Sato has just opened, most Tokyo venues are still setting up, and hotel rates haven't moved yet. December is the peak: Tokyo Midtown, Marunouchi, and Roppongi's Keyakizaka run in parallel with the city's [Christmas markets](https://www.nipponstays.com/christmas-markets-japan-2026/), and rooms for December 24-25 book out first. January and February pair naturally with a snow-country trip instead — Kobe Luminarie, Shirakawa-go's reservation nights, and the Sapporo Snow Festival all fall in this window, and our [December vs. February comparison](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-december-vs-february-winter-trip/) goes through the trade-offs (crowds and Christmas markets vs. snow and confirmed dates) in more detail than this guide does.

## Winter illumination dates at a glance

The table below covers the ten most-searched winter light-ups in Japan, with a confirmed-or-not column and a link to where to base yourself for each one.

## What is already confirmed, and what is not

Four of the ten venues above have published exact 2026-27 dates, and the other six are still displaying 2025-26 information because they traditionally confirm closer to the season. Nabana no Sato's own site lists the [October 17, 2026 opening](https://www.nagashima-onsen.co.jp/nabana/illumination/index.html?ref=nipponstays.com) for the park's illumination, and Kobe Tourism Bureau's [Kobe Luminarie site](https://kobe-luminarie.jp/about/?ref=nipponstays.com) confirms the 32nd event's ten nights spanning late January into February. Shirakawa-go Tourist Association posted the [41st light-up's four reservation dates](https://shirakawa-go.gr.jp/events/438/?ref=nipponstays.com) on July 1, 2026, and the Sapporo Snow Festival's organizers have [already set the 77th festival's week](https://www.snowfes.com/news/948.html?ref=nipponstays.com). Ashikaga Flower Fantasy, Tokyo Midtown, Marunouchi, Roppongi's Keyakizaka, and the Zao Snow Monster light-up were all still running last season's dates when we checked — not unusual for venues that confirm in October or November rather than mid-year.

## How confirmed is the 2026-27 season, right now?

Of the 10 venues in the table above, 4 had published confirmed 2026-27 dates when we checked (checked September 2026) — Nabana no Sato, Kobe Luminarie, Shirakawa-go, and the Otaru/Sapporo pair. The other 6 were still displaying 2025-26 information. That ratio will keep shifting through October and November as more organizers post next season's schedule, so read the "Announced?" column as a snapshot rather than a finished list — check back closer to your travel dates for the ones marked "Not yet."

## The two light-ups worth building a night around

Nabana no Sato and Ashikaga Flower Fantasy are the two venues on this list dense enough, and far enough from central Tokyo or Nagoya, that staying nearby changes the trip rather than just adding a train ride. Nabana no Sato's 2026-27 season is confirmed for October 17, 2026 through May 31, 2027, and its winter illumination runs the coldest, densest stretch of that window; our [Nabana no Sato base guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/nabana-no-sato-illumination-where-to-stay/) works out whether to sleep in Nagashima Onsen, Kuwana, or Nagoya against the last bus back. Ashikaga Flower Fantasy's night admission was a fixed ¥1,400 for adults in the [2025-26 season](https://www.ashikaga.co.jp/flowerfantasy%5Fspecial2025/jp/?ref=nipponstays.com), and whether it's a day trip or an overnight from Tokyo comes down to a single train timetable, which our [Ashikaga day-trip guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/ashikaga-illumination-day-trip-or-overnight/) covers.

## Snow-country light-ups are a different trip

Zao's Snow Monster illumination, Shirakawa-go's reservation-only light-up nights, and the Otaru–Sapporo pairing aren't extensions of the Kanto or Kansai illumination season — they're built around a ski or snow-country trip instead. In the 2025-26 season Zao's ropeway lit the frost-covered trees most nights from late December through February 22; the 2026-27 nights had not been announced at our check. Our [Zao base guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/zao-snow-monsters-where-to-stay/) covers where to stay for it. Shirakawa-go only opens on four reservation-only nights in the 2026-27 season, and the gassho-zukuri farmhouses under snow are the draw, not a string-light display — see our [Shirakawa-go guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/shirakawa-go-winter-light-up-where-to-stay/) for how the reservation system works. Otaru's canal-side snow lanterns and the Sapporo Snow Festival run back-to-back in early February; our [Otaru and Sapporo guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/otaru-snow-light-path-and-sapporo-snow-festival/) covers both, and our broader [Sapporo winter events](https://www.nipponstays.com/sapporo-winter-events-2027/) guide sets them inside the fuller Hokkaido calendar if you're building a longer trip.

## Kobe Luminarie and the Kansai option

Kobe Luminarie is the outlier in the confirmed column — Kobe Tourism Bureau announced the 32nd event's dates, January 29 to February 7, 2027, well ahead of when most Kanto venues typically confirm theirs. The lights run across Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi, and the Kyu-kyoryuchi (Old Foreign Settlement) district, all within walking distance of central Kobe. Whether it's worth staying the night in Kobe rather than day-tripping from Osaka or Kyoto is the question our [Kobe overnight guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/is-kobe-worth-staying-overnight/) answers.

## Autumn light-ups are not this list

Kyoto's maple-leaf light-ups run on a completely different calendar — mid-November through early December — and belong to a separate trip built around ryokan dinners rather than winter illumination. If that's what brought you here, our [autumn ryokan dinner vs. illuminations](https://www.nipponstays.com/autumn-ryokan-dinner-vs-illuminations/) guide is the one you want; this page covers the late-October-to-February winter season only.

## Which month should you go?

| Month | What's lit | Which base | Booking pressure |
| -------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| Late Oct – Nov | Nabana no Sato opens; Marunouchi and Roppongi start up | Nagoya/Nagashima or central Tokyo | Low — rooms and trains are easy to book |
| December | Peak season: Midtown, Marunouchi, Roppongi, plus Christmas markets | Central Tokyo | High around Dec 24-25; book by early November |
| January | Kobe Luminarie, Shirakawa-go's reservation nights, Zao's clearest skies | Kobe, Shirakawa-go, Zao Onsen | Moderate, but Shirakawa-go's 4 nights sell out fast |
| February | Sapporo Snow Festival, Otaru Snow Light Path, and Ashikaga's closing weeks (2025-26 ran to Feb 15) | Sapporo/Otaru, Ashikaga | High around Snow Festival week |

## FAQ: Japan winter illuminations 2026-27

### When does the winter illumination season start and end?

Most years it runs from mid-to-late October through late February. For 2026-27, Nabana no Sato opens earliest on October 17, 2026, and the last confirmed winter light-up on this list — the Otaru Snow Light Path — closes February 13, 2027 (Nabana no Sato runs on into spring, to May 31, 2027, but its winter display is the October-to-February stretch). Several Tokyo venues (Midtown, Marunouchi, Roppongi) typically extend into February as well, but their exact 2026-27 closing dates aren't published yet.

### What are Nabana no Sato's 2026-27 dates and admission?

Nabana no Sato's 2026-27 illumination runs October 17, 2026 through May 31, 2027, and the park has already published its admission tiers: ¥2,500 (¥2,700 at the gate) from October 17 to November 20, ¥3,000 (¥3,200) from November 21 to December 22 and again from December 26 to February 28, and ¥5,000 in advance / ¥5,500 same-day for the extended December 23-25 nights, which require an advance dated ticket. Every tier includes an in-park voucher.

### Which venues require advance tickets?

Shirakawa-go is reservation-only — there's no walk-up entry, and only four nights are held in the 2026-27 season (January 11, 17, 24, and 31, 2027). Nabana no Sato, Kobe Luminarie, and the central Tokyo venues don't require advance booking on ordinary nights, though Nabana no Sato's extended December 23-25 hours require a dated advance ticket, and Ashikaga Flower Fantasy's night admission is a fixed-price gate ticket rather than a timed one.

### Is December or January-February the better time to go?

December packs the most light-ups into one trip — Midtown, Marunouchi, and Roppongi run in parallel with the Christmas markets — but it's also the most expensive and crowded month to book, especially around December 24-25\. January and February trade some of that overlap for confirmed dates at Kobe Luminarie, Shirakawa-go, and the Sapporo Snow Festival, plus calmer hotel rates outside the Christmas spike.
