From Miyazaki City, driving takes about 1 hour 35 minutes via Route 218; by public transport, take the JR limited express to Nobeoka (about 70 min) then the Miyazaki Kotsu bus to Takachiho (about 90 min). Repair costs were too high for the regional operator and the line never came back. The Takachiho Amaterasu Railway now runs tourist "grand super-carts" on roughly 5 km of the old track, through two tunnels out to the Takachiho Iron Bridge — Japan's highest railway bridge at 105 metres. The ride takes about 30 minutes and costs ¥2,000 for adults (at our last check, July 2026). It's worth doing as an activity. It is not a way to get to Takachiho. ## From Kumamoto The Takachiho-go highway bus is the most popular public-transport option. Run jointly by Kyushu Sanko Bus and Miyazaki Kotsu, it departs from Kumamoto Station (also stopping at Sakuramachi Bus Terminal and Aso Kumamoto Airport) and arrives at Takachiho Bus Center in approximately 3 hours. The one-way fare is ¥2,700, and departures are limited — currently a single daily direct service each way (approximately departing Kumamoto around 09:11, returning from Takachiho around 16:57). Reservations can be made via the Kyushu Bus Booking site or Willer Express. Confirm the current timetable before travel — schedules change seasonally. Driving from Kumamoto takes around 2 hours via Route 265 through the Aso highlands. The mountain road is scenic but narrow in sections — allow extra time if you're unfamiliar with Japanese rural roads, and check road conditions in winter (snow is possible from December to February). Journey time is approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The fare is around ¥1,880 one way. Services run through the day — roughly ten departures daily from early morning to early evening. If you miss the last afternoon bus back, you stay overnight or take a taxi (expensive). Confirm current timetables at Nobeoka Station or via NAVITIME Japan before travel. To reach Nobeoka from Miyazaki City: the limited express Nichirin runs from Miyazaki Station to Nobeoka Station in about 70 minutes (from ¥3,500, varies by seat type). Local trains take about 100 minutes. Driving from Miyazaki City to Takachiho takes approximately 1 hour 35 minutes, generally via Route 218\. Your options: - **Taxi**: available at the bus center and by phone. The gorge, Amano Iwato Shrine, and Kunimigaoka observation point are all within a short taxi ride of town. - **Rental car**: if you drove in, you're set. If you arrived by bus and plan to visit Amano Iwato Shrine (about 8 km west of town), a taxi or shared tour makes sense as the road options are limited for walkers. - **Gorge shuttle**: a seasonal loop bus runs between the bus center, the gorge, and Amano Iwato during peak periods (Golden Week, summer, autumn). Reservations open online two weeks before your visit date, at 9:00 AM. During Golden Week and the autumn foliage season, the entire day's inventory sells out within minutes of the booking window opening. Online-only, no phone reservations. A 30-minute boat rental runs from ¥4,100–¥5,100 per boat (up to 3 people), rates vary by day. The boats are suspended during high-water periods — check the Takachiho Tourism Association site before confirming your visit. The tourist kagura at Takachiho Shrine starts at 20:00\. There is no way to see the full performance and catch a return bus to Nobeoka the same evening — the math simply doesn't work.
