Hiroshima Peace Museum school groups are heaviest in October, when the museum's own visitor data shows more people in its school-trip category that month than in any other — 73,790 visitors in 903 separate parties in fiscal 2025 (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, data as of 31 March 2026). The museum opens at 7:30 and stays open to 19:00 from September through November (18:00 in December); a reservation is required for 7:30–8:30 and for 17:30–18:30 (16:30–17:30 in December), with walk-up entry in between. Booking the 7:30 slot is the one way to be inside before the main walk-up window opens at 8:30\. If you'd rather stay within reach of the Peace Park than ride in by tram, [Hotel Park Side Hiroshima Peace Park](https://www.trip.com/hotels/hiroshima-hotel-detail-1308342/hotel-park-side-hiroshima-peace-park/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=hiroshima-peace-museum-school-groups&trip%5Fsub3=D19120600&ref=nipponstays.com) is a 5-min walk from the Kamiyacho-nishi tram stop. Adding Miyajima changes the calculation — see below.

## How many school groups visit the museum

Nationally, autumn is when Japan's high-school trips cluster, and Hiroshima is a fixture on the list of where they go — see our [overview of school trip season across Japan](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-school-trip-season-autumn/) for the month-by-month national picture. In the [Japan School Excursion Association's most recent survey of high schools](https://jstb.or.jp/files/libs/5750/202511041016529511.pdf?ref=nipponstays.com) (FY2024, 1,076 schools responding), Hiroshima was named in 112 of the 2,179 destinations schools reported, the eighth-highest count of any prefecture (5.1%, down slightly from 132 destinations and 5.6% the year before). Peace studies was the stated focus of 387 of the 2,284 trip activities logged in the same survey, the second most common theme after history study.

The museum itself publishes exactly how many of its visitors arrive as school or group-excursion parties, which is more useful than any national estimate. In fiscal 2025 (April 2025 to March 2026), 322,015 of its 2,580,926 visitors — about 12.5% — fell into that category, across 4,490 separate groups (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, monthly visitor data, data as of 31 March 2026). October was the single busiest month for those groups by a wide margin: 73,790 visitors in 903 parties, more than three times December's 21,679 visitors in 291 parties, and more than twenty times August's low of 3,366 visitors in 118 parties.

## Opening hours by month and when to walk in

The museum's opening hours shift by season, and the reservation-only windows are the one lever an individual visitor actually has. From September through November the museum opens at 7:30 and closes at 19:00; in December it closes an hour earlier, at 18:00\. A reservation is required for the first hour (7:30–8:30) and for a second window 90 to 30 minutes before closing — 17:30–18:30 from September through November, 16:30–17:30 in December; walk-up entry works for everything in between ([official museum hours page](http://hpmmuseum.jp/modules/info/index.php?action=PageView&page%5Fid=2&ref=nipponstays.com)).

| Month | Opens | Closes | Last entry without reservation | School-trip visitors, FY2025 (groups) |
| --------- | ----- | ------ | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------- |
| September | 7:30 | 19:00 | 17:30 | 34,012 (579) |
| October | 7:30 | 19:00 | 17:30 | 73,790 (903) |
| November | 7:30 | 19:00 | 17:30 | 62,956 (745) |
| December | 7:30 | 18:00 | 16:30 | 21,679 (291) |

The museum does not publish an hour-by-hour schedule of which school groups are inside on a given day, so there is no verified answer to "what time does it fill up" beyond the monthly pattern above. What is documented: any school bringing 20 or more pupils, or visiting as a class-education activity of any size, applies for free admission online between 90 and 7 days ahead ([the museum's page on fee exemptions for schools](http://hpmmuseum.jp/modules/info/index.php?action=PageView&page%5Fid=143&lang=jpn&ref=nipponstays.com)). The audio guide, for reference, runs about 70 minutes if played in full (official museum guide page) — a reasonable floor for how long to budget, before any queueing.

## Staying within walking distance of the Peace Park

Sleeping close to the Peace Park only matters if it gets you to the 7:30 reservation without relying on Hiroshima's first tram or bus of the day. [Hotel Park Side Hiroshima Peace Park](https://www.trip.com/hotels/hiroshima-hotel-detail-1308342/hotel-park-side-hiroshima-peace-park/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=hiroshima-peace-museum-school-groups&trip%5Fsub3=D19120600&ref=nipponstays.com), in Otemachi, is a 5-minute walk from the Kamiyacho-nishi tram stop and was fully renovated in February 2023\. Rihga Royal Hotel Hiroshima, in Motomachi, sits 3 minutes from the Kamiyacho tram stops. Neither hotel's own site states an exact walking time to the Peace Park itself. Our full roundup, [hotels near Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima](https://www.nipponstays.com/hotels-near-peace-memorial-park-hiroshima/), covers more options.

The alternative is the station side: [Sheraton Grand Hiroshima](https://www.trip.com/hotels/hiroshima-hotel-detail-705153/sheraton-grand-hiroshima-hotel/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=hiroshima-peace-museum-school-groups&trip%5Fsub3=D19119123&ref=nipponstays.com) sits directly against the Shinkansen exit of JR Hiroshima Station. We have stayed there twice, and the direct connection to the station is what we liked most about it. We also had club lounge access, which came with TWG teas and a Nespresso machine; on weekends the lounge poured Moët & Chandon at breakfast (the sign during our September 2022 stay said Saturdays and Sundays, 07:00–09:30, so check whether that still runs). The station side trades the walk for a short tram ride on the line that runs to Genbaku Dome-mae, which is the right call if your itinerary starts or ends at the station rather than the park — our [Hiroshima Station hotel guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/hotels-near-hiroshima-station/) covers that side in full.

## Adding Miyajima: which side to sleep on

Whether you sleep near the museum or on Miyajima comes down to which one you want to do first thing in the morning, not which is "better." If the museum is your early-morning priority, stay on the mainland and take the ferry to Miyajima later in the day. If Miyajima — Itsukushima Shrine at low tide, the ropeway, the torii at first light — is what you want, sleep on the island instead and do the museum on your way back through Hiroshima. Iwaso, a traditional ryokan on Miyajima, is a 15-minute walk from the pier, or the ryokan will send a shuttle between 8:00 and 20:00 if you call ahead once your boat time is confirmed (official access page). For what the maple valley near it looks like in November, see [our November guide to staying on Miyajima](https://www.nipponstays.com/miyajima-momijidani-november-stay-on-island/); for the wider case between the two bases, see [Hiroshima vs. Miyajima: where to stay](https://www.nipponstays.com/hiroshima-vs-miyajima-where-to-stay/). Our general [where to stay in Hiroshima](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-hiroshima/) guide is the place to start if neither base has decided itself yet.

## FAQ: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and school groups

### What time does the museum open in November?

7:30, the same as September and October, with a 19:00 close. A reservation is required for entry between 7:30 and 8:30, and again for 17:30–18:30; the hours in between are walk-up.

### How long does a visit take?

We found no official visit-duration guideline on the museum's site; its own audio guide runs about 70 minutes if you listen to every stop (official guide page). Treat that as a floor rather than the whole visit, especially if you're there during October or November when the museum's school-trip numbers are at their highest for the year.

### Do I need to book?

For an individual visitor, a reservation is required for 7:30–8:30 and for 17:30–18:30 (16:30–17:30 in December); everything else is walk-up. School groups are a separate system: any class-education visit, or a group of 20 or more pupils, applies online for free admission between 90 and 7 days before the visit date.

### How many visitors are school groups?

In fiscal 2025, the museum counted 322,015 of its 2,580,926 visitors — about 12.5% — in its school-trip-and-group-excursion category, spread across 4,490 groups. October alone accounted for 73,790 of those visitors in 903 groups, more than any other month (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, data as of 31 March 2026).
