Choosing between the Epic Pass or Ikon Pass for Japan comes down to how you plan to travel, not which brand sounds better. Ikon covers nine linked resorts — Niseko United, Furano, Myoko Suginohara, Lotte Arai, Shiga Kogen, Mt.T, NEKOMA Mountain, Zao Onsen and APPI — spread across Hokkaido, Nagano/Niigata and Tohoku, so the practical move is to pick one region rather than try to string them together on one trip. Epic is narrower and simpler: five consecutive days at Hakuba Valley's ten linked resorts, plus five more at Rusutsu, both with no blackout dates. If you're flying into New Chitose Airport, Rusutsu (Epic) or Niseko and Furano (Ikon) are on the table; if you're working from a Tokyo shinkansen base, everything else is. For a Hokkaido stay on the Ikon side we'd start at [Hilton Niseko Village](https://www.trip.com/hotels/niseko-hotel-detail-1483142/hilton-niseko-village/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=epic-vs-ikon-pass-japan&trip%5Fsub3=D19660062&ref=nipponstays.com); on the Epic side, [The Westin Rusutsu Resort](https://www.trip.com/hotels/rusutsu-hotel-detail-5297217/the-westin-rusutsu-resort/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=epic-vs-ikon-pass-japan&trip%5Fsub3=D19118920&ref=nipponstays.com) sits on the only other Japan stop either brand covers.

## What each pass actually gives you in Japan

Ikon Pass access in Japan runs on three tiers, and the tier decides both the day count and whether blackout dates apply. The full Ikon Pass gives 7 days at each of the nine resorts (Niseko United's four linked areas count as one stop), with no blackout dates anywhere in Japan. The Ikon Base Pass gives 5 days at each resort, and the Ikon Session Pass — sold only for Niseko United among the nine — gives 2, 3 or 4 total days; both of those lower tiers carry three Northern Hemisphere blackout windows for 2026-27 — December 26–30, 2026, January 16–17, 2027 and February 13–14, 2027\. Ikon publishes these as pass-tier dates rather than per-resort, and we could only confirm them applied at Niseko United, so check your resort's own page on ikonpass.com before booking a Base or Session trip around a holiday week.

Epic's Japan benefit is simpler because there's only one tier: Epic Pass, Epic Local Pass and Epic Australia Pass holders each get 5 consecutive days at Hakuba Valley and a separate 5 consecutive days at Rusutsu, with no restricted dates at either.

Neither brand makes you book lift access online ahead of time in Japan the way some North American resorts do. At Rusutsu and Hakuba Valley, Epic holders bring their physical card and a photo ID to a resort ticket window and are handed a paper lift ticket — mornings can queue, so redeeming early in the day helps. At Niseko United, Ikon holders with a physical card can scan straight through the gates; without one yet, you check in with the QR code in the Ikon Pass app at a ticket window first. Epic's own Hakuba Valley and Rusutsu pages confirm there is no advance booking step at either. On the Ikon side we could confirm the ticket-window check-in only at Niseko United — at the other eight, check the resort page on ikonpass.com, since redemption is set locally and can change between seasons.

## The Ikon side — nine areas, three different trips

The nine Ikon resorts in Japan split cleanly into three trips that don't share an airport or a train line, and picking one is a more useful plan than trying to cover several on a single visa run.

### The Hokkaido trip: Niseko and Furano

Both resorts sit in Hokkaido and both mean flying into New Chitose Airport rather than taking a train from Tokyo. Niseko United (Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono, linked and covered as one Ikon stop) is about a two-hour transfer from the airport; Furano is a similar distance in the opposite direction and sees far fewer international visitors. If your dates fall in a Base or Session blackout window, Niseko is the resort that actually feels it — Furano doesn't carry the same peak-season crowding.

### The Nagano/Niigata trip: Myoko Suginohara, Lotte Arai, Shiga Kogen, Mt.T

These four sit along the Hokuriku and Joetsu Shinkansen corridors out of Tokyo, so no flight is involved. Myoko Suginohara and Lotte Arai both connect through Joetsumyoko Station; Shiga Kogen runs off Nagano Station; Mt.T is reached from Jomo-Kogen Station by a roughly 45-minute bus to the Tanigawadake Ropeway base, then a 15-minute ride up to Tenjindaira. Mt.T is a single-mountain, largely lift-served day trip rather than a multi-day base — most travelers pair it with a night in Myoko or Echigo-Yuzawa rather than sleeping at the mountain itself.

### The Tohoku trip: NEKOMA Mountain, Zao Onsen, APPI

All three run off Tohoku or Yamagata Shinkansen stations. NEKOMA Mountain, on Mount Bandai in Fukushima, connects through Koriyama Station; Zao Onsen, in Yamagata, connects through Yamagata Station and a roughly 40-minute bus; APPI connects through Morioka Station. None of the three has the international profile of Niseko or Hakuba, which is part of the appeal if shorter lift lines matter more to you than English-language signage.

## The Epic side — Hakuba Valley for five days, plus Rusutsu

Epic's Japan benefit is built around one number: five consecutive unrestricted days, twice. At Hakuba Valley, that buys entry to all ten linked resorts under one lift ticket — Happo-One, Hakuba 47, Goryu, Iwatake, Tsugaike and the rest — so five days is enough to move between areas daily without repeating terrain. At Rusutsu, the five days cover a single resort known for tree skiing and a shorter airport transfer than Niseko, which is why some Epic holders treat it as the faster Hokkaido option rather than a lesser one. Neither location carries a blackout date for 2026-27, which is the main practical advantage Epic has over Ikon's Base and Session tiers — but it comes at the cost of only two Japan stops rather than nine.

## Neither pass covers these

A handful of well-known Japan resorts sit outside both brands entirely, which matters if your itinerary assumes otherwise. [Nozawa Onsen](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-nozawa-onsen/), GALA Yuzawa and the other resorts served from Echigo-Yuzawa Station require a standard day or multi-day lift ticket bought locally or online in advance — see our [2026-27 lift ticket price guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-ski-lift-ticket-prices-2026-27/) for what those actually cost at eight major resorts. Kiroro in Hokkaido is also outside Epic and Ikon, but it sits on a third pass: the [Indy Pass](https://www.indyskipass.com/our-resorts/japan?ref=nipponstays.com), the North American independent-resort pass, includes two all-day or night lift tickets at each partner resort, and [Kiroro’s own partnership page](https://www.kiroro.co.jp/partnership/?ref=nipponstays.com) states that Indy Pass holders are eligible for a two-day pass, terms applying. The Japan roster on indyskipass.com, checked 4 September 2026, also lists Kamui Ski Links near Asahikawa, Geto Kogen and Tazawako in Tohoku, and Kandatsu and Maiko on the Echigo-Yuzawa side; the Indy Base Pass carries blackout dates while Indy+ has none, so check the resort page against the dates you hold. If your trip is built around the Yuzawa hub rather than a pass resort, our [Echigo-Yuzawa base guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/where-to-stay-in-echigo-yuzawa/) covers where to sleep for same-day access to GALA, Kagura and the other gondola-served areas nearby.

## The dated aggregate

Of the 11 Japan resorts across the two passes, 3 — Niseko United, Furano and Rusutsu — sit in Hokkaido and require a flight into New Chitose Airport, while the other 8 are on Honshu and reachable from Tokyo by shinkansen without boarding a plane (checked September 2026).

## Which resort fits your dates

Once you know which of the three Ikon trips or two Epic stops you're taking, the next decision is how many nights to book and where to base yourself — the table below pairs each resort with the nearest shinkansen or airport gateway and a realistic length of stay.

| Resort | Pass | Nearest gateway | Nights that make sense | Where to stay |

## Trip Essentials for Japan

Things worth booking before you land, all in English:

- **eSIM** — [Airalo's Japan eSIM](https://airalo.tpm.lv/2TWpibQS?ref=nipponstays.com): install it at home and data works as soon as you switch off airplane mode at Haneda, Narita, Kansai, or wherever you land.
- **Tickets and day trips** — [Klook](https://klook.tpm.lv/8wzTeLyt?ref=nipponstays.com) covers the Japan Rail Pass, teamLab tickets, and shinkansen-linked day trips; booking ahead skips the ticket-window line.

## FAQ: Epic and Ikon in Japan

### Is Rusutsu on the Ikon Pass or the Epic Pass?

Rusutsu is Epic-exclusive — five consecutive unrestricted days for Epic Pass, Epic Local Pass and Epic Australia Pass holders. Ikon does not include Rusutsu at all; the Ikon equivalent in Hokkaido is Niseko United, a separate resort about an hour's drive away.

### How many days does the Ikon Pass actually give at each Japan resort?

The full Ikon Pass gives 7 days at each of the nine Japan resorts with no blackout dates. The Ikon Base Pass gives 5 days at each, and the Ikon Session Pass — sold only for Niseko United — gives 2, 3 or 4 total days. Base and Session both go dark during three 2026-27 holiday windows.

### What are the Ikon Base Pass blackout dates in Japan for 2026-27?

December 26–30, 2026, January 16–17, 2027, and February 13–14, 2027, per Ikon's own [access-details page](https://www.ikonpass.com/en/access-details?ref=nipponstays.com). These windows apply to the Base and Session tiers; the full Ikon Pass has no blackout dates in Japan.

### Do I need to reserve lift access in advance for Hakuba or Rusutsu on the Epic Pass?

No. Per Epic's own [Hakuba Valley benefit page](https://www.epicpass.com/regions/japan/hakuba-valley.aspx?ref=nipponstays.com), you bring your physical Epic Pass and a photo ID to a resort ticket window and are issued a paper lift ticket for each of your five days — no online booking step. Ticket windows can queue in the morning, so redeeming early in the day is worth doing before your first run.

### How late can I buy an Epic or Ikon Pass for a Japan trip?

Ikon listed the full pass at US$1,449 for adults (23+) on ikonpass.com when we checked in September 2026\. Both brands raise prices in stages through the autumn and stop selling before the northern winter peak, so the deadline that matters is the seller's, not the resort's — check the current cut-off on ikonpass.com or epicpass.com before you lock in flights.
