If you only have one day near Shiretoko between late January and March, the choice is **drift ice walk or cruise**, and the two experiences sit in different towns and ask very different things of you. The cruise, aboard the icebreaker Aurora out of Abashiri, keeps you seated and warm and needs no minimum age. The walk, run by operators based in Utoro, puts you in a full-body dry suit on the ice itself and comes with a minimum age (usually six) and a maximum age (70–74) plus height and weight limits. If you want the surer, easier option, book the Abashiri cruise near [Hotel Route-Inn Abashiri Ekimae](https://www.trip.com/hotels/abashiri-hotel-detail-703507/hotel-route-inn-abashiri-ekimae/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=drift-ice-cruise-or-drift-ice-walk-shiretoko&trip%5Fsub3=D20138337&ref=nipponstays.com); if you want to stand on the ice, base yourself in Utoro near [Kitakobushi Shiretoko Hotel & Resort](https://www.trip.com/hotels/shari-hotel-detail-703430/kitakobushi-shiretoko-hotel-and-resort/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=drift-ice-cruise-or-drift-ice-walk-shiretoko&trip%5Fsub3=D20138372&ref=nipponstays.com). Either way, the ice itself is not guaranteed — both operators change their plans when it drifts offshore.

## Cruise vs. Walk: The Fast Comparison

Both trips depend on the same drift ice, but they are run by different companies out of different towns, and they ask completely different things of your body.

## The cruise: what you see when the ice is in, and when it isn't

Two vessels run out of Abashiri: the large ship Aurora and the smaller Aurora 3\. I boarded one of these in February 2023, and the thing that surprised me wasn't the ice itself so much as how far the boat had to push into open water before it found a solid field of it — drift ice is a moving target, not a fixed shoreline. In the most recent published season the boats ran daily from January 20 to March 31, 2026, with departures roughly every 90 minutes to two hours through the day (checked September 2026 via the operator's site; the 2026–27 schedule was not yet posted).

If the ice has drifted offshore on a given sailing, the boat does not simply cancel. According to the [operator's official FAQ](https://www.ms-aurora.com/abashiri/faq/?ref=nipponstays.com), the trip continues as a marine sightseeing run, covering up to about 10 km one way within the hour, and there is no automatic refund for a sailing that finds no ice — the go/no-go call for weather is made roughly an hour before departure, and the operator does not contact ticket-holders individually, so you check the site the morning of. Preschool-age children ride free and older children pay a reduced fare; exact fares were not yet published for the 2026–27 season when this was checked, so confirm current pricing on the operator's site before booking.

## The walk: dry suits, guides and who can join

The drift ice walk is a completely different activity from the cruise — you are not sightseeing from a boat, you are wearing a sealed, full-body dry suit with built-in boots over your own clothes and walking, and in places floating, on and between the ice floes with a guide. Multiple operators run this out of Utoro, and their age and size rules are similar but not identical: expect a minimum around six years old (elementary-school age) at most companies, a maximum age between 70 and 74, and height/weight limits in the range of roughly 130–190 cm and under 110 kg. Nobody in our household has done this tour — the operational details below come from the operators' own sites, not from firsthand experience, so treat the exact cutoffs as a starting point and confirm with the operator before booking, especially if a child in your group is close to the minimum age or someone in the group is near a size limit.

Sessions typically run in a morning and an afternoon slot and last around 1.5–2 hours door to door, with 40–60 minutes of that actually spent on the ice. If the ice has moved too far offshore to reach safely, some operators substitute a discounted snowshoe walk to a nearby waterfall instead of cancelling outright.

## Why you cannot comfortably do both on the same day

The cruise leaves from Abashiri; the walk meets in Utoro. In winter, the only scheduled public transport between the two is the seasonal [Shiretoko Airport Liner](https://www.abashiribus.com/en/memanbetsu/?ref=nipponstays.com), and in the most recently published (2026) winter timetable it ran just twice a day in each direction: from Abashiri Station at 10:02 and 13:57, arriving Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal at 11:48 and 15:46; from Utoro at 9:30 and 12:20, arriving Abashiri at 11:27 and 14:01\. That is a roughly 1 hour 45 minute ride each way (checked September 2026; confirm the 2026–27 dates and times before booking, since the seasonal service is republished each year).

Run the numbers and there is exactly one combination that lines up on paper: do a morning walk session in Utoro, catch the 12:20 bus, land in Abashiri at 14:01, and board a mid-afternoon cruise sailing. Doing it in the other order does not work — the earliest Abashiri-to-Utoro bus (10:02) leaves before a morning cruise has finished, and the next one (13:57) lands in Utoro at 15:46, too late for an afternoon walk slot. Even the one combination that works on paper leaves no slack: a walk that runs long, a delayed bus on an icy road, or a cruise that's cancelled for weather and you've lost the connection with no way to recover it that day. Treat the cruise and the walk as two separate outings rather than a single day's itinerary, and pick whichever one matters more to you for the day you have.

## A look at the numbers behind the age limits

Of the four walk operators compared below, three publish a minimum age of six years old or "elementary-school age," and the fourth does not publish a minimum age at all (checked September 2026). Three of the four cap participation at age 70; one allows up to 74\. All four apply the same rough height range, 130–190 cm, and a weight ceiling near 110 kg — the dry suits are sized equipment, not a policy choice, so the range is consistent across companies even though the exact wording differs.

## FAQ: Drift ice cruise or walk

### Is the drift ice walk or the drift ice cruise better for young children?

The cruise has no minimum age — preschoolers ride free and school-age children pay a reduced fare — while the walk requires a minimum age of around six at most operators, plus height and weight limits tied to the dry suit sizes. For a family with a child under six, the cruise is the only one of the two that's actually bookable.

### What happens on the Abashiri cruise if there's no drift ice that day?

The boat still sails, but as a regular sea-sightseeing run of up to about 10 km one way rather than an ice-breaking trip, and the operator does not automatically refund a sailing that simply finds no ice. The go/no-go call for weather is made roughly an hour before departure and posted on the operator's site rather than sent to individual bookings.

### Can I really not do the cruise and the walk on the same day?

The only working combination is a morning walk in Utoro followed by the 12:20 bus and an afternoon cruise sailing in Abashiri — the reverse order does not connect with any published bus time. Even that one combination leaves no room for a delay, a long walk session, or a weather cancellation, so most visitors are better off treating them as two separate day trips.

### What is the minimum and maximum age for the Shiretoko drift ice walk?

Most operators set the minimum at around six years old (elementary-school age) and the maximum between 70 and 74, alongside a height range of roughly 130–190 cm and a weight limit near 110 kg — these figures come from the operators themselves and are worth reconfirming when you book, since one operator (LANTOKO) does not publish a minimum age at all.
