Christmas markets in Japan 2026 come down to four real options, and they are not equally worth carving out an evening for. If you are already staying in central Tokyo, the free Roppongi Hills and Azabudai Hills Christmas Market is the one to actually go to — no ticket, no advance booking, and it sits a short walk from [Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo Roppongi](https://www.trip.com/hotels/tokyo-hotel-detail-737058/villa-fontaine-tokyo-roppongi/?Allianceid=9711325&SID=327049682&trip%5Fsub1=christmas-markets-japan-2026&trip%5Fsub3=D19699171&ref=nipponstays.com) next to Roppongi-itchome Station. Both the Meiji Jingu Gaien Tokyo Christmas Market and the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse market charged admission in 2025 — ¥500 and up in Yokohama, ¥1,000 and up at Jingu Gaien — and neither had published 2026 pricing at our check, so budget for a paid ticket and buy it ahead once the 2026 window opens. Sapporo's Munich Christmas Market is the only one held with snow already on the ground, and it is worth the detour only if you are already spending time in Hokkaido.

## Four Christmas markets, and what actually makes them different

Japan runs several German-style Christmas markets every winter, and only four of them are large enough, central enough, or different enough to plan a trip around. The Meiji Jingu Gaien Tokyo Christmas Market is the biggest single event, spread across two sites in 2025 (Jingu Gaien and Shiba Park) and the one closest to a genuine German market in scale. The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse market pairs the stalls with a harbor view and a landmark 1911 warehouse building. Roppongi Hills and Azabudai Hills run a smaller, free version aimed at an after-work crowd rather than a day trip. Sapporo's Munich Christmas Market is the only one that overlaps with an actual snow season, held inside the wider Sapporo White Illumination.

Each one answers a different question. Jingu Gaien answers "I want the biggest market in Japan." Yokohama answers "I want a harbor and a warehouse in the background." Roppongi and Azabudai answer "I don't want to plan or pay for this." Sapporo answers "I want snow with my mulled wine." The comparison below sorts out which of those you are actually solving for. For the full list of illumination dates around the country this winter, our [Japan winter illuminations guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/japan-winter-illuminations-2026-27/) covers the rest of the season.

## Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse: buy the ticket before you go

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse market is not a walk-up-any-time event. In 2025, general admission started at ¥500, with priority tickets (¥1,500–¥2,000) that shortened the queue and came with a souvenir mug. Advance sales run through the ticket platform Asoview, and the operator's own guidance was blunt about it: buy ahead, because on crowded days same-day tickets can stop selling with no warning, and unticketed waits near Christmas have run close to two hours. None of that is a "timed entry slot" in the strict sense — once you're in, you can stay for the day — but it is a paid, date-stamped ticket you should not assume you can grab at the gate on December 23\. The [official Red Brick Warehouse Christmas site](https://www.yokohama-akarenga.jp/christmas/?ref=nipponstays.com) is where the 2026 ticket window will post first. If you'd rather compare more of the neighborhood before picking a hotel, see our [Minato Mirai vs Yokohama Station guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/minato-mirai-vs-yokohama-station-where-to-stay/).

## Tokyo Christmas Market: check which venue is running

The Meiji Jingu Gaien Tokyo Christmas Market has changed address before, and the ground it sits on is still being reshaped. It ran in Hibiya Park through 2022, moved to the Jingu Gaien painting-gallery lawn in 2023 as Hibiya Park went into renovation, and by 2025 had split across two sites — Jingu Gaien and, newly, Shiba Park — making it the largest edition yet. Jingu Gaien itself sits inside a long-running redevelopment zone, with construction ongoing near the event's usual footprint. None of that guarantees a venue change for 2026, but it means checking the [official Tokyo Christmas Market site](https://tokyochristmas.net/?ref=nipponstays.com) before you book anything around it is worth the two minutes, rather than assuming it lands in the same spot it did the year before. 2025 adult admission ran ¥1,000 on weekdays and ¥1,500 on weekends through Dec 19, rising to ¥2,000 every day for the final week; elementary-age kids paid half that and preschoolers went free. If Ginza or Tokyo Station suits your Tokyo stay better than Shinjuku, our [Ginza vs Tokyo Station guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/ginza-vs-tokyo-station-where-to-stay/) covers that side of the city, and Christmas dinner reservations at the big hotels open earlier than most visitors expect — see [when to book a Tokyo Christmas dinner](https://www.nipponstays.com/christmas-dinner-tokyo-when-to-book/).

## Sapporo's Munich Christmas Market is the only one with snow on the ground

Sapporo runs its own German-style market inside the wider Sapporo White Illumination, and it is the one market on this list you will genuinely experience with snow underfoot. In 2025 it occupied Odori Park's Nishi 2-chome block with wooden Hütte-style stalls, and entry was free. It is not a market worth flying to Hokkaido for on its own. It earns its place on this list because if you are already there for the snow season, it costs nothing to add to an evening in Odori. Our [Sapporo Station vs Susukino guide](https://www.nipponstays.com/sapporo-station-vs-susukino-where-to-stay/) covers where to base yourself for it.

## What we could confirm before publishing

Of the 4 markets in this guide, 0 had official 2026 dates posted on their own sites, and all 4 still showed only 2025 information when we checked in September 2026\. That is normal for this time of year — Yokohama Red Brick, Jingu Gaien, and the Hills markets have all historically announced their coming season in late September or October, which is why this article names 2025 dates as a same-week-last-year reference rather than guessing at 2026\. Check the official link in each section above once you are within a few weeks of travel.

## Which market to skip

If your Tokyo stay is three nights or shorter, skip the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse market unless you already had a Minato Mirai day planned. The round trip from most central Tokyo hotels, plus buying a ticket in advance and possibly queueing, costs more of a short trip than a Christmas market gives back — especially when Roppongi Hills and Azabudai Hills already put a free one at your hotel's doorstep. Skip Sapporo's market entirely unless Hokkaido is already on your itinerary; it is not a standalone reason to add a city to a Tokyo-based trip. It does make sense as a free add-on if you are already heading north for the snow. The one market worth keeping on a first Tokyo winter trip is Jingu Gaien, simply because it's the only one at a scale that resembles the German original.

## FAQ: Christmas markets in Japan

### When do Christmas markets in Japan open in 2026?

None of the four markets covered here had official 2026 dates on their own sites when we checked in September 2026; all four were still showing 2025 information (Nov 21–Dec 25, or Nov 22–Dec 25 for Roppongi and Azabudai). Announcements have historically landed in late September or October, so expect confirmed 2026 dates well before the season opens.

### Does the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Christmas Market need a ticket?

Yes. General admission in 2025 started at ¥500, sold through the ticket platform Asoview, with priority options priced ¥1,500–¥2,000 for a shorter queue. Buying ahead matters close to Christmas — same-day tickets have stopped selling with no warning on the busiest days, and unticketed waits have run close to two hours.

### Are any of Japan's Christmas markets free to enter?

Roppongi Hills and Azabudai Hills Christmas Market is free, as is Sapporo's Munich Christmas Market. The Meiji Jingu Gaien Tokyo Christmas Market is not — 2025 adult admission ran ¥1,000 on weekdays and ¥1,500 on weekends through December 19, rising to ¥2,000 for the final week.

### If I can only visit one Christmas market in Japan, which should it be?

If you're staying in central Tokyo without a car, Roppongi Hills and Azabudai Hills together cost nothing and sit two stations apart on the Hibiya Line, so there's little reason to skip them. If you want the market that most resembles the German original in scale, that's Jingu Gaien. If you want one with snow on the ground, that's Sapporo — but only if you're already in Hokkaido for the season.
